- Jerry appeared on Late Night two times: October 5, 1982, and March 29, 1984. Here are both.
The promotional clip to the film he was promoting on the latter appearance, "Retenez Moi, Ou Je Fais Un Malheur," had been edited out due to copyright caution.
Late Night writer Stephen Winer:
"One of my favorite memories with David Letterman would be the day of Jerry Lewis' first appearance. There were a few genuine Jerry fans among us and I think we were all a bit nervous about meeting him because of his reputation for being difficult. Well, I had a chance to talk with him a bit and he couldn't have been nicer or more generous. Yes, I'm sure luck was with me. But I get to keep that memory. Then he went on with Dave and all this happened. By the way, the Jerry Lewis records Dave holds up are mine and I still have them.
"During a break he asked [Segment Producer] Bob Morton, 'How far should I take this?' Bob said, 'All the way!'"
19:00-21:00: Jerry is a creative genius no doubt, but boy is he exhausting. The constant pivoting, the moods that flip on a dime. The kidding when he’s annoyed and the seriousness when he’s happy. He’s hard to read. David was a saint here.
Check out Dave interviewing Oliver Reed.
Hé made the show.
He was here for that..
He's extremely passive aggressive Pam0626
He wasn't comfortable in his own skin … and sadly, he sometimes took this out on others.
I'm Italian and I loved him growing up...he was such a fun actor to watch ❤️
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face..
Many Sides to Jerry Lewis, many so Funny, Original and Creative and many Dark sides to his personal life.. A Complicated Man
I remember that as a child I didn't miss even a Jerry Lewis movie, I loved it when he acted alone and I was crazy with laughter when he was paired with Dean Martin. The typewriter's scene is always hilarious when happen to see it
Jerry is sooo handsome. & his relationship with Dean is so heartwarming. They’re together again now. Rest in paradise kings😍🤩✨
He's a rapist
That 1982 interview is so great. I laughed out loud. I never laugh out loud. Now I want to cry because it is becoming so long ago.
LOWER!!!
@Donald Trump THE Donald Trump???
Kevin Allen ....ya I remember 1982 I was having a baby girl! ... Lol 😆 now I have to grandsons 4 & 8 ❤ what was you doing in 1982? Watching Jerry Lewis on David Letterman's show? .... Lol 😆
He loved Australia.
Whatcha looking at up there?
love how the band plays “tears of a clown” - a reference to the infamous unreleased “the day the clown cried”
Loved himself and him alone😊
Jerry Lewis and Soupy Sales did it for me! I was born in 1962, to come up in that time in the world of Comedy was a deep time!! Love you Jerry.....Thanks
Jerry and Dean was more in the parents age group not exactly cutting edge for a kid born in 1961. By the time we were old enough to get the humor he was already that telethon guy . sure he was doing movies on his own in the 1960s " Dont lower the bridge raise the Water" and "hook line and sinker " but he had already left Dean.
He even had a chain of short lived movie theaters in the late 1960s and early 70s .
He was at his best in Dean and Jerry movies The Stooge and Thats my Boy. That were in reruns by the 1960s and seen on the 4:30 movie by the 1970s
He did so much For MDA charity and deserves iconic status for his unselfish pledge and dedication to the cause.
One of a kind..and so cool to see "young Dave" get flustered by a comedy legend. I got to see Jerry live in Vegas a couple yrs before his passing & even in his late 80s, he was a piece of work. Wont see his like again...so sorry LAYYDEEES!
Damn cigarettes. If he hadn't been a smoker, we wouldn't have lost him at the youthful age of 91.
😉👍
Right!!!
He had plenty of time. 91 years is a great age. It was beyond his time, far longer life than most.
There never was and never will be another like this creature, Jerry Lewis.
He was a jerk, so I'm glad we'll never see someone like him
Chouter21 , sure! I am guessing that you and Mr. Lewis were close friends! You seem to know him personally to make such statements!
Jeff Maxwell
Yup
thank god
Sorry did Jerry hurt you personally?? Lol stop the hating! I can't stand some moralist cheesy American people. There are other ways to let out your personal frustration and anger.
From a glorious time in American comedy history. RIP JL. ; )
I watched his entrance like five times. So good! I just realized what a great sense of rhythm he had with his stage business.
TheMusicalJourneys Yes, that entrance was gold!
See all the colgate comedy hour.
His timing and rythm are extraordinary
That entrance spoke so much to me. It's although he meant to say Show biz is on rails and I'm the conductor. When he sticks his tounge out and breaks the forth wall as to say watch my mastery of this tired and true formula.
Duude look at me! I am making funny noises and doing weird dances! Never understood boomer humor, the only funny thing about Jerry Lewis was how pathetic and stupid he was.
@@sanserof7 He was a master of comedy in his time. Simple, don't watch it if you don't get his work.
I miss the 60's, and the 70's
Caesar Valentin Why?
@@otto16121970 WELL, considering the state of affairs NOW....holy shit.
You bet I miss the ' good years ' too! This is crazy and the 'end' must near, or something! 😒
It literally says this was in the 80s lol
I had the privilege of waiting on Jerry Lewis. He was awesome and gave me $100. Tip on a $80. Check and called me "Captain" Thanks for the memory and laughs...
Mark Anthony aka TIGERMAN shame he gave his kids nothing lol
Oh and was he trying to impress a woman that he was with?
His 'kids' have the rights to all of his work.
@@Wowwwzaaa His generosity throughout life is why he didn't have much left at the end apart from his home. But everyone did okay out of him for years don't worry.
He worked to support himself from the age of 14, and gave his kids jobs, yet even in their own retirements, you think a 91 year old should still be shelling out for them all? They are grandparents themselves. It's their turn.
YEAH, AND HE RIPPED OFF HIS CHILDREN, i HAVE NO RESPECT FOR PEOPLE WHO RIP OFF THEIR CHILDREN.
He’s zany, charming and very generous to Dave here. Letting Dave do his zingers. He seemed to respect him. As we well know, Lewis had no patience with interviewers and could be rude and pedantic. Here, he’s rolling along with Dave beautifully.
Ok
Dave was VERY "dominant" and sarcastic in the early days, but he met his match and MORE with Jerry!!!!!!!
Over the top, and hard work to listen to.
I worked as a musician in Jerry’s band. It was an honor, and he was tremendously funny, he kept me laughing constantly.
Really? How old were you? 20s I'd imagine
What do you think of the accusations in 2022 that he jacked off in front of a woman in 1961? Do you think it could be true j petes?
@@johnnymeyer4253 It does not surprise me. I've heard things about Danny Kaye too.
@@NoOne-kr4jc OK, we absolutely need to hear more about this
@@johnnymeyer4253 Woah ... Hey LADY!!! 🤡
That bit with the cough and the cig on the spot was funny!😆
Massive talent, Jerry was.
Such an original. Each joke and pratfall was carefully choreographed and made it seem so spontaneous and fresh. Man, will I miss Jerry Lewis ❤️😔.
Jerry was an arrogant jackass.
So strange & awkward.
Hadn't been funny since the 60s.
Really?, it felt like he was never going to end, or start
Kudos to Dave for sticking in there. Probably the hardest interview ever.
Look up Gilbert Gottfried on the Arsenio show.
@@chrisplatz7594
J
J Lewis us a nasty peice off work.
I will look it up
Love Australia x
Dave was a cocky and sarcastic guy in the early days, but Jerry brought "a little" more to his desk!!!!!!!
Come on. They were having a great time. Mutual respect.
Oliver Reed; much tougher.
My 1st memories of laughing till I cried when I was 4 or 5 yrs old .Jerry Lewis, legend
🤓 Can you remember which movie that was ? Or what bit or scene ?
Legend for what for joking 🤔😆
he was great as buddy love.
Finished first visit. That was a great interview. So many engrossing moments. A Legend indeed.
The first visit is certainly one of the best talk show appearances I have ever seen.
Peter Hamsun I agree, Jerry was incredible
Peter Hamsun. Jerry was awesome that night...
You must not watch talk shows
Peter Hamsun, you look just like Jim Croce.
Absolutely great to see this again!!!
How awesome!
Lifetime Fan ❤️

Of all the shows I've watched where Jerry was a guest, he was the funniest on Dave's show. Their chemistry is excellent!
King of Comedy is an epic movie.
He was great in that movie!
Agreed, David hangs in there but no one could touch Jerry's improv talent!
Robin Williams?
Jerry was obviously a tortured soul but a brilliant comedian. So quick witted and clever.
Yeah, quick to take advantage of women. What did he care, he was better than anyone else in his mind.
Funny to see Dave so nervous here. Jerry drooling water on himself. Dave not knowing exactly how to handle it.
Frank Patek Dave was getting frustrated like handling a cheeky kid
Jerry laughs at Dave's jokes too, and reacts to Dave's words with great timing. Nice to see that kind of reciprocity coming from guest to host.
The truly great ones always laugh when others are funny. Only the small time douche bags withhold laughter and fail to give funny people their due.
finally an intelligent comment in these comments. and I agree with you!
@@sliceserve234 thank you for your kind remark!
Buddy Love was the ultra cool, very cocky young Jerry Lewis! I think he was Jeckyl and Hyde himself, crazy and funny but sometimes serious and nasty when the mood took him. Still, an incredible guy, very sharp and clever, unbeatable expression, I still watch his old films.
Being funny was so effortless for Jerry. It was like breathing for him.
Even though Jerry became difficult, this still brought tears to my eyes.
Try and RIP, Jerry.
The One and Only.. This is Absolute Gold.. They'll Never Be Another.. Rest in Power JL 💖💖
Every year growing up for me, no matter what, my Dad Nicolau stopped the clock to raise money for the Jimmy Fund. I remember being picked by my Dad to call into 'The Jerry Lewis Fund" show and tell Jerry What we raised for him, and it was awesome. My Dad N has passed in 2016, and when I feel lonely, I watch this and remember just what he taught me, my Dad and Jerry ... Dad was like you can do good work, and be super silly too! I respect Jerry, yes, he made life mistakes, who hasn't??? I love you Dad, and I love you Jerry! Thank you!
I love your heart and your obvious love for your fine Dad.
"Is this the way you are when you are happy?"
I loved my whole life
I don't remember him being this funny during an interview.
RIP. You will be missed but remembered and entertaining thru your movies. 💕
I love listening to him talk. He's so smart, articulate, wonderful, and funny.
Thank you Don...🌿
Mid 50's and still going to the ground for a bit. A true inspiration.
Tell that to his children.
@@bonnie3447 It's ok to like an entertainer even if he's not a perfect human being..
Inspiration? Ask his family. You people have no clue what a vile creature he was
@@bonnie3447his children are grown adults
Never heard him before in an interview. He seems very intelligent. He reminds me of Robin Williams. The energy, the wit, and the edge.
I thought so too. It seems strange that people have depicted him as a narcissist who was unkind to his first family, when here he talks as though he has a lot of personal insight. It is also interesting how genuine he sounds, when he speaks about bad/cruel people. It seems an odd thing for a narcissist to do.
The Greatest Late Night entrance of all time. Look at the way lewis hung is hands. Infinitely swaggy.
Hey Don, thanks for uploading all
These Letterman shows. Your whole
Team for the show is a classic example of ball busting laughs that we just don’t get in late night anymore.
The funny character he puts it on !!! his really a serious business intelligent high quality business mind
I hope Jerry Lewis' watch goes to a museum. It was such an enormous, defining part of the man.
His widow and his daughter last year
sold in auction all his watches, the watches given to him by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. ....
They also sold his suit from The Nutty Professor and his clown suit....
For my own, I would have given
them to a museum.....
@@daniellebourgade8701 It seems as though he wasn't anywhere near as rich as was made out by the end. His boat was sold before he died too. People forget he spent a lot over his long life, often funding his own projects, gave his kids work, was bankrupt at one point paid and for his first wife's care up until he died. He helped many people out, and at 91 he was still forking out. His adult kids were by no means without money, and own the rights to all of his work.
@@daniellebourgade8701 Danielle, I am absolutely certain that his estate was in serious trouble. EVERYTHING had to be sold exceptionally quickly and I feel that his creditors were kind enough never to make this public. Take a look at the interview with the lady who bought his house originally. So many things were left in the house and she made only a few minor adjustments before reselling again with some very personal items still present. This nice lady clearly buys property very suddenly, then moves on and is at great pains to express what a lovely lady SanDee Lewis was. His daughter is always the one to appear to discuss the estate - leaving me to think his widow is too distressed. This may well account for why his sons were left out of the will and why he seemed so careworn and bitter in later life as well as his grievous health problems. Frankly, I think the way in which Lewis was treated was disgraceful. His every move was demonised and whilst he was no angel whatsoever, the wrongdoings of his contemporaries were conveniently glossed over, whilst he was ceaselessly criticised. I hope the future sees his body of work recognised and assessed for what is was and still is - quite brilliant and groundbreaking.
@@saschacunliffe7383 you've clearly done your homework and know your stuff.

GOAT.... Hands Down. Many actors learned how to do comedy from Jerry, but none can ever be him. ;)
One of the best/funniest interviews Jerry ever gave. Thanks Don!
He looks so young and he is so funny! A force of nature! Love him
The '82 Jerry is amazing. He could turn it on when he wanted to--or maybe better to say he turn off all the tiring, boorish behavior when he felt like it. He's really funny here. Letterman is also being gracious and letting Jerry riff all he wants to because he knows how good it is. Like when he had Andy Kaufman on, Dave would get let him go, feed him a benign comment or two like Carson was so good at. So altogether a great show business performance!
Jerry Lewis is one of a kind. He is hilarious here.
My favorite line David says, "You're very entertaining."
My favorite line Jerry says is, "You don't see someone say." 😂
6:54 going to commercial. classic, brilliant Jerry. the head moving back and forth from camera to DAve. While most think of Lewis for his pratfalls and large bits, I have always loved the tiny tiny things that are so brilliant and that move was one of them.
I knew barely anything about the guy and I watched the whole thing. funny guy.
Watch his movies on CZcams.....talented AS
A great comic , a comedic mind at his best. A type of comedy that no longer exist.
One of Jerry's better interviews! Everybody was great Dave, Jerry, the audience!

Cant look at him at not laugh. He was a comic genius.
He makes me puke. A ego as big as Donald!

The water bit was hilarious...don't ask me why. It's just good to laugh and innocent stuff too,
Our culture was so much more subdued and natural back then. Now it's totally hyped which sells more with the added benefit of hindering the public's ability to think rationally.
There's culture in America?
888zzz “Subdued” is not a word that I would ever associate with the comedy of Jerry Lewis...
@@lindashelley3635 Compared to today's so called "entertainment"----Jerry Lewis is indeed, quite subdued. I think that THAT contrasting-irony was the [paradoxical] point that was initially being made. The fact that Jerry Lewis (back then) could have been called anything BUT subdued only proves the point being made about today's overhyped/obnoxious garbage that so often passes as entertainment.

He was, he was actually pretty!!
Dave and Jerry going after each other. Feisty.
incredible timing, almost surreal humor & i'm talking about them both. thanks for posting !!! !!
Bobby Cormier. So true Bobby, Jerry was flawless and Dave a great straightman.
Jerry Lewis was a genius. Virtually everyone who dealt or worked with him said he was very hard to deal with, but successful, wealthy & talented people usually are. Notice he's almost chain-smoking & coughing in 1982, and only 2 months later he had a heart attack. Martin Short nailed it when he says to do a good impression of him you act like you're sucking on a lozenge. RIP Jerry.
Bette!!!!
Amphetamines?
I love Jerry Lewis movies.
The great thing about seeing this now, 35 years later(!!!) is that, back then, Jerry was the old school, vaudeville-trained, old-garde and Dave was bringing this new type of ironic humor to television but, seeing it now, Dave was no less schticky than Jerry! And you can see how much Dave loves him but it's very hard for these two character / humor-types to co-exist on one stage! Which makes it even nicer when Dave gets Jerry laughing a few times. Great to see this now. R.I.P., Jerry. Thanks for always going WAY over the top and always owning it!
Jolar70: Jerry Lewis was not an old school comedian - his physical comedy style was ground breaking, he was way a head of his time and paved the way for so many other comedians, Jim Carrey, Lee Evans, etc... If an "old school"-label should apply it is that contrary to todays stand up comedians Jerry Lewis had learned so many facets of a true comedian's craft - singing, dancing, playing an instrument, conducting, directing, writing, the list cold go on and on.
