ZZZAP!!!!! (1970)

  • This 16mm film was a typical public service type made by regional utility companies in the 1970's, and would have been made specifically to be shown in schools. Here we learn about how curiosity kills the cat (over and over and over). There are lots of flash frames in this one, so fair warning to those who are sensitive. I transferred this 16mm film with my own Eiki Telecine. Enjoyzzzzzzzzzap!

The beginning of this video reminded me of something I saw many years ago. I was in Boston, waiting for the subway. This particular branch used a third rail. The rail itself was hollow, and raised off the ground with insulators. There was a gap between sections of hollow rail, I'm guessing to allow for expansion. I believe there were short sections of bare cable acting as jumpers to connect rail sections.
So, I was waiting for the next train to arrive, and looking down at the track. I saw a mouse scurry across the ground, run up the insulator and into the hollow rail. I expected to witness the electrocution of a mouse, however the mouse's body was too short to complete the circuit.
So this mouse had stumbled onto the perfect place to live, guarded by a 600V booby trap waiting to fry any predators.

Grew up in LA and definitely had a DWP comic about electricity safety at some point growing up, but never caught a recording of this. Love this specific era of low budget stylized early 70s animation, it makes me feel nice

To teach kids about the dangers about electricity, this is really good film. Lots of clear examples.
But for learning about plain electricity & electric power, I'm afraid it's not as good as Schoolhouse Rock's "Electricity!" from the same time period. That one's shorter, punchier, memorable song and a lot more flashes-per-minute. Still, "Electricity" didn't really mention safety.

There was an excellent tidbit of MISinformation during the super storm Sandy in New York. Mayor Bloomberg, with various emergency professionals standing side by side with him, was giving "advice" to the citizenry. One of the things he said was not to touch any downed power lines THAT WERE SPARKING. You could see some of the professionals seemed uneasy with that bad advice, but none were brave enough to speak up. Of course, you should never touch ANY downed power line, sparking or not, because it can be energized. And, of course, the news media I was watching didn't at any point add in a correction to that bad advice.

It was probably relevant but stunt kites (two strings) were a rage back then... the best place for me was a ploughed field down the lane... funny... now I think of it there were pythons running through it.
