This is, of course, one type of telegraph terminal equipment, used in the USA. There were quite a few different types developed in Europe that were equally efficient, though differing in design. Before the Baudot code mentioned, there were machines that could translate cable code, a form of morse that used positive & negative voltages, to send & receive messages.

I wonder if you might have the time to answer a brief question. It seems to me that as late as the early '80s, that Teletype machines connected with others by means of a 5-digit number similar to a phone number, and that it was even dialled on older models with a rotary dial to connect. This seems to stick in my mind because in the early days of fax-machines I remember a secretary on the phone telling me that I had given her: 'Too many numbers for a fax!'...when I had simply just given her a standard phone number which faxes use(d). She was insistent that it had to be only five-digits long, but having had a Teletype in the office where I had worked as a late-teen, I sensed she was confused between the two (it was, in her defence however, the early days of the fax machine just starting to come into the average small business office). I persisted in regard to the fax number, and she finally listen so that the fax came through. Regarding the old Teletype, however, was I right in that they connected to others with a five-digit number, or have I simply become confused with time? Cheers!

If you could develop a lens that would add curve like that to a flat screen you would have a market for it. It's hard to recreate the look of these old TVs because nobody makes CRT TVs any more.
