  • A video of how I installed a section of type E cavity trays into an existing cavity wall and only taking out one course of bricks. This shows just one section however the entire job needed 17 separate trays.
    To Note
Always seek professional advice before carrying out any building work.
Cavity trays are done in one meter sections never take out any more then that in one go. Let the mortar go off then carry on the next day.
I found by the end that an angle grinder in the bed first then knock out with the breaker was easier.
This had the lead already in situ so I kept that in place however if doing it from scratch allow the lead to sit on the brick further then the standard 25mm.
Also this was undertaken when the weather was poor so better to pick dry days so you don't have the same issue with the mortar running.
These trays were good and as shown can be used by just taking out one course of brick.
If you have a 12" angle grinder that would be well worth using on this type of work..
If you like these videos please like and subscribe and I will keep doing them..
    Thanks for watching..

Could you not cap the top in lead, copper or some sort of membrane?

It's the water pentrating through the wall causing the issue. But yes definitely something to Try first. They had replaced the ridge tile on top of the wall before and this was undertaken.
This was the last job to do as water was still getting in..

What about water getting behind the trays

Technically water should not transfer to the internal wall down behind the trays. That would only happen if there is something bridging the cavity for the water to track across and if that happened then the that would need clearing. However there is a flap on the cavity tray that sits up against the internal wall also..

But it’s a radial wall so it wouldn’t sit flat against it
