  • Stumbled across this issue whilst repairing another roof leak. Previous owner or roofers installed the Eaves Protectors on top of the roofing membrane or roofing felt which traps water, causes the felt or membrane to rot and in turn, leaking inside your house! Easy fix!

    Thanks for this tutorial. I,m going to give this a go myself , but I am also going to fit bird stop at the same time as we are having a lot of birds nesting in our roof.

      Any tips? I feel badly out of my depth when messing with the roof. This one felt simple but, there's probably a million and one tricks of the trade I don't know...

    Hi Froy, I'm just about to do this exact same thing on my garage roof.
    I think that you done a very decent repair job here, whoever installed the eves protectors obviously didn't know that they are designed to be placed below the roof felt, at least you can sleep easy now in the knowledge that your eves are protected.
    Thanks for the methodical approach, I found your video very easy watching. 👍

    The eaves protector is meant to be nailed onto the rafters, not the fascia. It doesn't really matter but will make replacing the fascia in future a pain.

    • @froywhernside
      @froywhernside  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I did that initially but there was a huge gap between the eaves protector and fascia board. Nailing in to the fascia closed the gap almost completely 👍

    I've just noticed a drip of water between the soffit and the brick wall of my brick built garden store room. I've been quoted 6K to have the tile roof replaced with felt - the roofer said the pitch of the roof is too low for tiles and water must be tracking under the tiles and onto the membrane. But I'm going to try what you did because I noticed I can't actually see the membrane overlapping the top of the eaves and extending into the gutter so I suspect water is travelling down and then just pouring in the soffit because the membrane is just too short. I'm hoping this eaves protection support will help. I have to get over my fear of lifting up the tiles first to actually confirm my suspicion, so thank you for the demonstration!

      Give it a go! You find your tiles are nailed on but other than that, it should be straight forward to have a look at least 👌

    Looks like a good job. The roof underlay and timbers seem to be in good order just odd that the support tray was fitted incorrectly. I've seen some videos where the tray is used to replace damaged felt at the eaves. I don't think that's always suitable.

    • @froywhernside
      @froywhernside  Před 7 měsíci

      Someone has clearly been up there before as the original felt had been replaced. Just need to do the same on the front of the house now, although from a ladder 😬

    Great video, looks a job well done and worthwhile 🤓👍 I've discovered a section of my roof where the felt has receded (no idea how long it was, frayed edge) back a bit further than I'd like but still has enough to drip into the gutter. This eves protection would be a great solution and underneath seems the only logical way to install, not sure how that installer got that wrong really 🤣
    Great info 🤓👍

    Please I had a front half roof replaced on 1900s terraced house. The reason the roof failed of 40 years maybe, was the felt at the eaves had disintergrated allowing water that had penetrated the roof slates to not to reach the gutter. The roof was fitted recently with no eaves suport trays. I insisted the roofer fit them eaves support trays, he said I did not need them. I told him that modern current practices would include them on a replacement roof. From my commonsense am I right and should they be fitted as normal practice? Many thanks

    • @froywhernside
      @froywhernside  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm not a roofer but I don't see why they would not be fitted. They stop the membrane sagging long-term.

      @@froywhernside Many thanks, every other person except my roofer completely agrees the need for the trays to be fitted. After a direct request my roofer fitted the eaves trays, requiring the new slates to be refitted to allow the trays to be nailed to the rafters. Commonsense many thanks for your confirmation.

      EXACTLY!.....the felt support trays sit on top of the fascia board the felt(membraine) sits on top of the trays.......also the 3 perimeter tiles should be nailed/fixed and the channel of the tile on the verge/gable should've been taken/cut off........ this is another video taken by another wannabe expert!

      Of all the Trades, the most and amusing Rip-Off attempts, were from roofers. Pulling up flashing with a photo, an overhaul with no tiles changed, just pathetic pointing on ridge tiles.
      Do most myself now and a better job.
