This movie, Nashville, was a trip. But the part I remember the most is when sexy Keith Carradine sang this song. I love how when he says this is for someone special, and like five different women in the audience think he singing just to them. This was Keith’s best moment as far as I’m concerned!
There is no way there should have been that kind of chemistry between those 2 people. That’s one of the most sensual scenes I’ve ever seen at the movies. Great movie, great acting and Robert Altman was a genius. I read that he got all the actors to write their own solos.
Every woman in that room wants that song to be about her. I know that I still do too!! It's one of my absolutely favorite killer love songs that hits smack in the heart every time.

Honestly, I didn't care for the movie. It has not held up well, getting very little play over the years, but if Lily's reaction to the song didn't at least give you a lump in your throat, you have no heart
One of the greatest 'movie' songs ever. Robert Altman was a genius. A great scene - one of the best in movie history. The expressions say it all. This, my friends, is movie-making at its best.
This song gave me chills the first time I heard it in the 1975 movie Nashville. I heard it again today on XM app and I felt the same way. It makes me feel hopeful, love, desire, and everything beautiful. Thank you Keith Carradine!
What a song, and what a scene....The way they play their looks....wow!! Lily Tomlin was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G !!!! How much intensity...how much sensuality....... I was almost 10 when that movie. I want go back to the seventies....but with my fifty three.
Lily Tomlin's painful reaction to her lover's song should have won her the Oscar, though she was thankfully nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Of course, "I'm Easy" did win Best Song.
Lily was at the height of her glory in the 70's - Laugh-In, TV specials.. and she went on to new heights in the 80's. And she's still on top with Frankie and Grace!
I am trying to figure out where she went in her head to get that emotion: You see the whole fact that she knows she is going to do something she doesnt want to do..
I remember everyone in the movie theatre awestruck by Tomlin's nonverbal reaction to Carradine's song. You could feel the emotional pause in the air after his performance and there were even some tears in some eyes. One of Altman's best directorial sequences and Tomlin's highly inspired moments.
What a great scene! with 3 of the 4 women who thought they were being serenaded coming to the realization that it was another he was singing to and thinking of. Beautifully directed, acted (and, of course, sung!)
Keith Carradine was 19 when he wrote this song. He said a lot of people thought he was selfish or a narcissist because of this character. But if you watch him getting his Oscar- he is clearly proud of and pleased with his accomplishments and he is so happy and grateful to acknowledge his father.
i think they have 3 generations, maybe even 4, of Carradine performers now... real talent is at least a little genetic... and gains momentum over generations... His father John was already very powerful and mystical, the 3 sons/ brothers that we know of, all great
@MarkingTime34 John Carradine...I adore him.A fabulous actor...I first saw him as Mr Gateman on the Munsters. It was a new show...I was in the 5th grade. My brother and I are horror movie and TV aficionados. When my brother was six, he discovered the movie Wizard of Mars which I would have never even known about except that my little brother watched schlock TV day and night. It must have been very gratifying to Mr Carridine to see the brilliant work his children did.
It seems to me that what makes this song and his performance is a rare combination of simple straight-forward lyric which avoids attempting to beguile the listener with "cleverness" , a pleasant melody which confirms the lyric, and the singer-composer who believes in the message.
Of all the things that Lilli's done......this scene is the one that stays with me. This tugs at my heart like no other. Brava girl! You and Keith both!

What a great song! Written and performed by Keith Carradine. Great Robert Altman film with an all-star ensemble cast. A great director at the peak of his career. Don't miss this movie - Keith's song is just the cherry on the top of delicious movie. Robert Altman was also the director of M*A*S*H. Movie making at it's most brilliant. Thanks for all the wonderful memories, Bob & Keith.
Altman films are excellent. No other director that I can think of presents dialogue the way that he did. M*A*S*H and Nashville are good examples of it, also Short Cuts. He often has several characters speaking at once, yet you can still hear and understand what each person is saying. The result always sounds very realistic because people talk over each other all the time in real life. It's hard to do it in a movie, however, without missing some of what is being said or the dialogue turning into a bunch of mushy gibberish.
Lily Tomlin should have won an Oscar for this scene. And Nashville is completely underappreciated for the masterpiece it is because it's so far ahead of it's time filmmaking and content wise.
One of those special songs and performances, immortalised forever in this unforgettable scene, in a film that can only be described as a masterpiece. Thank God for the Arts.

Born and raised Nashville, pushing 70. Nashville has evolved, and is evolving, but not into Memphis. Once a city with a cultural and regional distinction, is has fast become a Third World shit-hole. The place is indistinguishable from an international dump.

I love the way Altman lingered on Tomlin's face at song's end. She deserved her Oscar nomination for that look alone. The irony was that Carradine's character, Tom Frank, was a heartless womanizer and not the tender soul of the song's lyric. Won Oscar for best original song of 1975.
Yes, but in the scene in the bedroom that follows this, Tomlin's character shows us - with exquisite patience, as she prepares to leave, that she understands her lover's youthful posturing and brattiness, and forgives him. She is the mother of young (and deaf) children, after all. This excerpt and Carradine's music are an encapsulated gem, one of those film moments that will forever remain sheer magic...

It's not my way to love you just when no one's looking
It's not my way to take your hand if I'm not sure
It's not my way to let you see what's going on inside of me
When it's a love you won't be needing, you're not free
Please stop pulling at my sleeve if you're just playing
If you won't take the things you make me want to give
I never cared too much for games and this one's driving me insane
You're not half as free to wander as you claim
But I'm easy
I'm easy
Give the word and I'll play your game
As though that's how it ought to be
Because I'm easy
Don't lead me on if there's nowhere for you to take me
If loving you would have to be a sometime thing
I can't put bars on my insides
My love is something I can't hide
It still hurts when I recall the times I've cried
I'm easy
I'm easy
Take my hand and pull me down
I won't put up any fight
Because I'm easy
Don't do me favors, let me watch you from a distance
'Cause when you're near, I find it hard to keep my head
And when your eyes throw light at mine
It's enough to change my mind
Make me leave my cautious words and ways behind
That's why I'm easy
Ya, I'm easy
Say you want me, I'll come running
Without taking time to think
Because I'm easy
Ya, I'm easy
Take my hand and pull me down
I won't put up any fight
Because I'm easy
Ya, I'm easy
Give the word, I'll play your game
As though that's how it ought to be
