"I went in there, not intending to buy anything..." How many times have I said that?!
Not often enough and judging by your comment not self-convincingly enough.
I know how it sounds and feels...
Every time you mispronounce “Messerschmitt,” a puppy dies.
Yes, idk what he said. Metsherschmitt or something like that

"Maybe one day in retirement..." Yeah, we've all been there :)
I've got a closet full of models I haven't built yet.
Me too. I may sale them on Ebay accept for one that my Aunt gave me as a Christmas gift just before she died in the late 90s. It is a Revell 1/32 Hawker Typhoon Mk.1b. I have to build that one before I die, or pass it along to a nephew who will. I have not actually built a kit in 25 years, in the early 90s I starting building them and for 3 or 4 years always built one every couple or three months. At the end of that building frenzy, my bedroom did not have 3 square feet that did not have a 1/72 plane hanging from it. I still have them. Each one in a zip lock bag in case any small parts fall off, and lightly packed in boxes filled with styrofoam peanuts. Maybe one day I will display them again. I preferred 1/72 because of the selection and when hanging they sized right in relation to each other. I built some 1/32s that I had in display cases, but few as I did not have really any place to put them.
On retirement and still no time.
Oh my GOD the Monk Bar model shop!!! No way, I lived in York as a kid and that place was my favourite! I searched it out about 5 years ago when I went up there for a weekend and was amazed/pleased it was still there. Amazing!! 🙂
2manynegativewaves it really hadn’t 🙂 I was secretly hoping they’d still have the Star Wars scalextric id always had my eye on!
Did you ever see the episode of James May's Toy Stories where he made a 1/1 scale airfix Spitfire? It is available on Amazon if you haven't seen it. He got a bunch of school kids to help build it and introduced them to model making.
* pops in Iron Maiden's "Aces High" aaaaaand ... OK, go! ; )
it's ironic that you brought up Maiden because lead singer Bruce Dickinson is also an airplane pilot and he is a big time war plan buff too
"Airfix is the name of model war birds, they're the best you can get"
Guess he's never seen any kits from Eduard lol.
Isaac Barker Or Tamiya.
Isaac Barker airfix lack so much detail in their kits i prefer eduard, tamiya, italiera etc
Did you hear about the B-17 that went down the other day?
The Nine O Nine
Yes. Just awful. On top of the seven deaths we also lost the most beautiful airworthy B-17 there was currently.
Im at the Akron/Canton airport, R.i.p. to the souls and families and farewell to B-17.
I remember getting to go aboard that plane when I was about 13 years old, at the time I was building a B-17G 1/48 scale model. So sad.
I live in Worcester and I could hear the planes they were just there a week ago
I love those! My lifetime hobby is model building.
Same!
Just put together the Spitfire with my eight year old daughter. Had so much fun! Thanks for making me aware of this wonderful product.
I always enjoyed browsing model and toy shops! I can spend hours in there! XD
I’ve seen these in my local Hobby Lobby. Seeing how they look afterwards only convinced me to get some of them now.
York is a beautiful city - I went there many times as a kid growing up in Leeds. Now, in my 40s, after an adulthood in central London I am close to moving to York. Then I will have the space to finally build the Lego Darth Vader's Castle I was gifted for Xmas...in 2019!
Time is one of the biggest things in the model making hobby, I struggle with that to, I really only get a hour or two after school, love showing off your models, thanks
Those are really cool! Great for kids and adults. As with all things, the model building community is really in a beautiful place. Just like with plastic post WWII digital has really improved kits and accuracy. I collected toys SW for 25 years. Then returned to the model building hobby. You don’t have to wait till your 70 homie. Plenty of us 80s kids in our late 30s and early 40s are upping the model and figure painting game. Plus we have monetary assets for all the good stuff we didn’t have as kids 😅. Really your are essentially one of us when you’re retroblasting these ole toy renovations. Also agree the Spitfire is so beautiful!
I am retired now and got the ME109. Great kit, I wargame in 1/32 - 1/38 scale ww2 and I use the smaller scaled tanks from classic toy soldier (i'm not a scale purest). I was looking for aircraft between 1/32 and 1/48 scale and this ME109 was the perfect size as it scales out about 1/39.
Took me about 30 minutes to assemble, I did glue the pieces of the wings together and then sprayed clear coat on the assembled model to keep the decals from coming off. Will get the other 2 WW2 models. Great video BTW.
Nice way to start off a Friday. Thanks, RetroBlasting!
You get to fly in a friggin’ actual d-day spitfire? Dude, i’m sooo jealous! But hey, you totally deserve it! As to the issue of the decals: how about cutting before you apply them on the model, using the seperate panels as a ruler that’ll guide your knife? Bit tricky but it’ll mean the tip of your knife will go around the bottom edges of the panels instead of the top edges. That way, should you accidentally miss a curve, the panel is still ok. Also keep in mind that the knife has to be really sharp at all times, because as a knife dulls it has a tendency to make the edges along the cut lines curl up, causing them to pick up dirt. Hope that helps!
famous last words ,''I WENT IN JUST TO LOOK''
I've been in that shop when I went there a few years ago, took me right back to my childhood
Monkbar Models has been a favourite place of mine for nearly 40 years, it's a fantastic shop - glad you found it and enjoyed it too.
Those are way cool! I'd love for them to make some F-14s, F-16s, and A-10s. And Soviet MiGs, too!
I started collecting these, after this video and when they appeared in my local Lidl store at a really cheap price. Bought all three, including the Mustang. But they weren't without some quality issues. One of the Spitfires I bought was missing the piece that allowed you to attach the propeller to the complete model, and the company I e-mailed were no help.
Then when assembling the Messerschmitt, the two final parts that attach to the end of one of the wings wouldn't connect. Meaning that in the end. glue is still required.
Great video! Cool looking product. Absolutely loved the ending!!!!! That would be AWESOME!!!
Thanks for telling us about this. I had no idea these existed!
I LOVED LOVED LOVED this episode of Retroblasting.. Growing up my dad would take me to many US Historical sites..Revolutionary War and Civil War... Our bonding time was watching WWI and WWII documentaries( dad refused to watch Vietnam due to memories ).The POINT is im the son of an Indian Immigrant ( Dad valued the Freedom Men fought for and joined the Marine Corp during Vietnam) This understanding was passed down to me... Looking at those Models should be a reminder of the Price of Freedom... It was at a high price... Of all the cool things in the Retroblasting Studio it is your love of WWII aircraft I enjoy.. Having an uncle that worked/works on Modern Aerospace.. one can not help but marvel at the Men ( and I mean MEN) that Piloted these . Today we have SAT/COM Instruments.. Planes that can basically fly themselves.. BUT give me a WWII Ace over technology any day of the week. If you ever see one of these old birds fly in airshow.. you can not help but tear up. It's that beautiful. Its funny, my retirement plan is building war ships like the Yamato, Iowa class, Montana, Colorado... even the dynamic of the WWII plane Vs Battleship is like a pack of Wild Dogs Vs Lion ( using animal analogy of two predators capable of killing each other) .. Anyways, this was ALOT of fun and thank you for sharing.. ( as always my friend)
Very Nice Mike! Looks like you had fun! Oh, those kits are great too!!
"Rose, there's a Messerschmitt in the kitchen. Clean it up for me, would ya?"
I found some airfix army men from the 60’s at a goodwill. Huge box full of them.
I just so happen to have both the Spitfire & BF-109 Models. And they were extremely easy.
I feel bad for all of your sets that won’t get built in retirement because we will still be watching your channel 🤣
As a child, I didn't have the artistic ability to put together models, but I loved them. I found an easy to assemble model kits, and came already painted/with decals. I can't remember what the name of the company was as it's over 35 years ago.
Oh Michael,
That is so awesome! I would have loved to fly in that old bird!😁👍
I also have a love for aviation wanting to fly the F-14 Tomcat in the Navy!🇺🇸
Funny, we share many of the same interests as I also love WW2 history and planes. Well of course vintage action figures. Thanks for another cool video. I may have to see if that company makes a P51 Mustang.👍
Bill
Very cool 😎 I just got the Me 109 today! Action figure passion and WW2 interest go well together 🥸
I have several Cobi tanks and I got the F4 Corsair by them too. They actually do look good. Interesting to build and the quality is near LEGO.
That was pretty informative. Thanks!
It's great you brought this up! I have model kits piled up as well. But what really stands out is my Airfix P 51 Mustang like your GI Joe sized flying Tiger...its huge. Where to display it as well as a place to build it was almost impossible in my home. But I keep it anyway as a get to it "someday". I have planes mostly and alot of tanks which I have built. I can display those. I built a Huey gunship from the Vietnam era, and it was probably the hardest model I have ever built. The 1/24 scale planes are just ginormous!
Very cool video, I too study WW2 History and I’ve got to get those sets, they look so cool.
Got a whole stash of kits, but little to no time to build! So, i understand well, Micheal.
I understand Nine O Nine from the Collins Foundation was lost a few days ago. Lives lost and one fantastic B-17G. Heavy losses that just can’t be replaced....
Wow cool vid. I still build models scifi mostly and some autos. I would have been sick in that plane lol. Glad you got to have that experience Michael must have been awesome for you.
Very cool! I had no idea about these. This looks like the next step up from Snap Tite kits I remember as a kid. The cool thing here--minus the decal issue--is that ability to disassemble again. Yes, the camo idea is really a neat one. A toy is even more satisfying when you recognize a design element and think something like "Wow, they really got this right!"These planes also look more weighty and that is something that I think helps although I still need to pick one up someday. I always liked a toy that had more of a weighty feel because it made it seem more playable...the folks who tune in to this channel get that. Good for you for being able to fly in a real vintage Spitfire!
Really nice to see Model kits on your channel!! I was hoping one day you would do an episode on all the Vintage Star Wars Model kits. I would be more than happy to build and paint a Model Kit for your channel one day, i paint everything from vehicles to figures/monsters.
Good stuff... try giving the upright section of the stand a quarter turn, it gives the plane more angles - enjoy!
These really are great little models and pretty unique to Airfix. I still build and my stash is pretty horrific. I may finish them all, but only if I outlive Yoda. Love the way you sneaked in the preview to the trip with Boultbee....can't wait to see that episode. Love the Spitfire. Always have. I was lucky enough to help out on a few airworthy Spits here in the UK back in the 90s. That's me with my favourite Spit in my profile pic. Keep up the stellar work!
Been going to that shop since I was a kid.
I did one model kit and found I do not have the patience or paint skills needed for that hobby. I do love the star wars rival snap together sets.
I love these I really love that massive p40 though that was really something
I feel this was what model kits was missing on. I am an armor model builder, and I recently got hooked on Gundam model kits. Gundams are snap fit but for the most part looks good without painting needed. Give it a try Michael 😀
You flew in a spitfire! That’s awesome!
Great vid Retroblasting! I've got a similar brand of Model Kit: Revell. The only Model Kit I have is the Mini Kits A-10 Thunderbolt. It's like Micro Machine scale so that's awesome! Won it last year! Plus I'm a huge history fan on WW2 Aircraft (RAF) too! Not just a collector of Transformers , Star Wars and MASK. Though that's my No.1 interest!
Ahh i will allways watch you guys where do i get my toy riviwes and from :)
My 5 year old son built a R.A.F red arrow one of these with a little help from me we picked a few of these up in home bargains for about £4 each
Wow. Cannot wait for more real life spitfire action! x
You got SKILLS, Micheal! I didn't know you can fly planes! Super cool :D
You don't see too many of those model shops in the UK anymore. They're like catnip for guys.
I have a couple of Pontiac Trans Ams models that I never got around to building. My wife still has a Titanic model she still hasn't done. I just buy the built diecast cars now.
Airfix. Now you need a stick of Cadbury Fudge or Flake to nibble while you work. Might as well push the boat out, lad. 😊
I had the ME262 and Spitfire toys from 21st century toys. Michael is right those where nice but took up to much room.
Cobi is a really good brand, especially when it comes to their newer stuff. Their quality really has gone up in the recent years. I have a Fiat 126 from their Legendary Cars of PRL range, it's a pretty solid little model.
Yeah, and they mostly replaced the stickers with print. My Panther A just got here a couple of days ago
Aces High by Iron Maiden would be awesome Spitfire flying music!
My dad used to take me into that model shop about forty years ago. It looks the same, but I'm not sure if it's still called the same.
A few years ago, they released glue-together kits that were prepainted. IMO that was the perfect solution. The paint jobs were REALLY nice and you got to essentially build the kit in a similar way to this. I kinda wish they'd gone that route with the paint but these little kits are very nice
Great video, I will definitely keep an eye out for them in my home town of Newbury in Berkshirefor them kits, Or maybe a short trip to Bath could be on the cards..
So was that you flying very low in a Spitfire over my house the other week.. That would of been cool.. I hope you have a whole video planned of you flight in the Spitfire that would be brilliant :-)
If you're going to Bath, might as well travel a bit further to Frome and visit Jadlam. They have the best models online and I believe you can visit by appointment.
What I like about your show is you have not been bought of by these toy companies, keep it up love the show
I just saw the end of the vid... WOW!
By the look of things Airfix have started to do these with the decals on the parts.
Looking forward to what's coming
Ok for under 10s wanting to join in that watch the bigger kids learning patience , hand eye coordination , paints and colour mixing etc .
I believe these kits are on sale at my local toy r us in Malaysia for a few years now. A nice way to get people interested in model building. 😊
Well guess what I am ordering from amazon? Great review as always
If you liked these Quick Build models I recommend the Airfix Quick build F-35 Lightning II. All the doors can be open and closed, engine can swivelled up or down and the undercarriage can be installed up or down. I don't work for Hornby :)
I just ordered the P-51D like 10 minutes ago. Wish there was an A-10 Warthog or a P-38 Lightning kit though
I love building WW2 RAF and Commonwealth aircraft kits. There's just something interesting about the designs and development. I did build the Airfix Quick Build Spitfire and modified it with some paint
Nice models, Michael and I love the idea of not messing with glue and paints.
Nice!
My favorite was the p-51 Mustang.
Some years ago, I went to a model shop to buy just one flat white spray can. Just one. Well only one....one.
However, after I made my business there, I went out with a rather expensive (and never built) beautiful, charming and shiny Bandai hover tank.
And the humble spray can? I forgot it...of course.
HAH! On one of your other Vidz I mentioned that I too collect 21st, Century Toys/Ultimate Soldier WWII aircraft in 1/32 scale.
They are Nicely detailed AND if you are a modeler like ME there are LOTS of "After Market" options to upgrade the details on them, which I've been doing.
The one 1/18 scale one I bought at a local rummage sale is a 1/18 P-38 Lightening... and it's HUGE! It has some broken parts, and needs some "TLC" but for $20.00
I couldn't pass it up! So... I've been able to remove the "Glued On" parts and fix some of the issues, now I just need to do some paint touch ups and add some details and it's "Display" worthy. :D
Joe from Jefferson Wisconsin
Mike you and I are of the same thinking.
Hobby Lobby sells some of those. When I was a young kid, I would put my snap tight models together in the back seat of the car on the way home. Have fun!! I'm going to go put a dent in my unfinished kits stored in the closet.
I Collect Commercial Aircraft by a Brand called Skymarks. Hobby Lobby used to sell them.
@@avgjoeavglife I remember those. I had a PAN AM 747 blow up airplane hanging from the light of my bedroom when I was a kid. Won it at the fair. My cousin was also a flight attendant for PAN AM at one time. She is much older than me.
@@erikkunkle9574 Actually, i think you are remembering something else, Skymarks is Resin, not Blow-Up, I have 2 Skymarks Pan Am Models, a 747-100, and a 707. Google Skymarks and you will see.
@@avgjoeavglife I know, two different things. Noticed your name, thought I would share about the balloon
@@erikkunkle9574 Ok.
I have 1 of those!
Michael, you should look up Yat Ming Air Signature die cast models. I have the De Havilland Mosquito and the P38 Lightning. They have retractable landing gear and pilot figures with somewhat detailed interior. Rare but they're worth it. They've even got the Focke Wulff FW-109 and the Mitsubishi Zero. These are 1/24 scale so they dont take up too much real estate
What a coincidence because I'm also making a World War diorama about planes and tanks and heck even the soldiers
I've got the entire set of Quick Builds, which is about 20-25 models. There are a few cars in the range including the Volkswagen Beetle and Camper Van. You can fit Lego Minifigs into these. If you are looking at getting a Cobi model, I would recommend the Tiger 1 tank. It's a good solid build that looks good too.
For the last year ive been picking up the 21st century toys 1/18 planes so far I have the p-51, tbf avenger, 2 fu4 corsairs, me-109, ju-87 stuka, fw-190, and the amazing p-38...edit 21st century also makes smaller scale 1/32, 1/48 planes which you can still track down
The dude was right. Lego never makes vehicles for war. Tough back in the day they did make a replika MI-24 for the dinesours sets. Back in 2005-6. They had several vehicles like humvees and so on. But these Airfix lego like things. I will buy one. I have watched these for quite some time now and i have the exact same problems as you. While these are essentially legos.
It's the 100th anniversary of the RAF this year. Lots of merchandise around. Never has so much been owed by so many to so few. Brave men and women all. We must never forget. That golden generation of people are now all but gone.
Hey! Any more footage of your flight? That's awesome!
If you check with online model dealers; I'm sure that the Kits that you purchased are in there as well. Check with Squadron online. They have a huge online catalog and still mail off paper catalogs as well.
It’s closer to bandai’s gundam model kits Bandai perfected the snap fit designs and have been since the 90’s
My brother is the same way he loves any 19th century war and loves LEGO but at first he went with cobi then he went to brick arms which is a big LEGO/military company which isn’t associated with LEGO but is very good with how they build there models only problem is that there expensive like really expensive
So getting into them is quite the expensive endeavor.
Always liked a nice model kit. Used to make some Formula 1 kits back in the 90s. I liked to build them but I sucked at the paint. That's why I like the Super Mini Pla kits that are being made for Power Rangers/Sentai. There's even a nice looking Voltron and they don't need painting.
Oh my GOD! Next time I am in York! Oh you better believe it!
Dam the large B17 1:48 scale nice !!
As a legit mediocre modeler I can see the benefit of these for toy enthusiasts that dont have the time to build a fine scale model as I am also a "toy" collector.
I used to build ww2 airplane kits also when i was a teenager, i hung them from the ceiling
Check out the Unimax Bf1O9 Michael. It's 1/35 scale - very unusual for an aircraft model - and looks absolutely awesome.
Have you ever seen the micro machines world war 2 aircraft? A P-51 and a Folk Wolf. Very nice with dropping bombs. The same scale as their Star Wars sets.
Love the hobbies stores! Use to build models airplanes! Then later, marvel charters like the Thing, and Hulk. Now, when free time. Gundam models.
I have the spitfire with the stickers applied and I was wondering if you ever did cut them with a exacto knife and how it went, as I'm wanting to do the same thing?
