- Ryan and Cole from MACkiteboarding.com discuss their experiences with the Foil Drive, a tool designed to enhance foiling (surfing on a hydrofoil board). Initially, Ryan expected it to be similar to an efoil, a lighter version of traditional foiling. Cole hoped it would eliminate the need for paddling in waves. However, their first sessions were humbling; they chose too small gear, leading to difficulties in catching waves.
In their second sessions, they used larger boards and foils, improving their ability to catch and ride waves. Ryan, with his background in kite and wing foiling, and Cole, experienced in boat foiling, emphasize the importance of prior foiling experience before using the Foil Drive. It's not a beginner's tool but an assistive device to enhance the skills of someone already comfortable with foiling.
They highlight that the Foil Drive helps catch more and smaller waves, previously inaccessible. It allows for continuous riding by propelling the rider to the next wave, reducing the need for physical pumping. However, there's a learning curve, particularly in managing the transition of the propeller unit in and out of the water to avoid instability.
In conclusion, the Foil Drive significantly increases wave count and time on the foil, aiding in skill progression for intermediate and advanced foilers. Ryan and Cole plan to create more detailed videos to help others learn and benefit from the Foil Drive.

Newbie. I was learning to wing for 6 months in a fickle wind spot. Got the drive, foiled more the first day than I had in 6 months. Switched to a PNG1300 wing after 5 times, another 10 times I've moved the mast forward a couple times to a place where suddenly turning is easy on my huge 110L. I am practicing turns, and my pumping is up to 8 pumps. Another 10 times and I think I will be ready for some soft waves, as you say, even tho I surfed there is no way I'm taking that gear into breaking waves. All this in one month. Game changer for me.

Nice advice, I have one question that some how nobody talks about. Maybe it is insignificant but what size mast is recommended. I guess it depends on the size cable/motor you order (15/30/25cm) but for each of them can you recommend a mast size?
Yes, it is a factor. I generally go a 5-10cm longer with foil drive to make sure I have proper clearance. The size is determined by my foil width, board width, riding style, and water depth. If I ride a 15cm, I can use the same mast but then I can't motor around while on foil, only boost. -Tucker
Good video guys. I have been feeling a bit disillusioned after not cracking the code after 3 sessions on a Gen 1 Foil drive and a 37l prone board.
The Gen 1 needs a fairly steep face / wave to generate enough speed at my weight to be able to get to your feet. Problem is by the time I have enough speed I'm dropping down the face going too fast and struggling to get to my feet fast enough before the wave starts breaking and going nuts.
Need to try smaller surf and a bigger board, build up my skill first!
Yes, a longer, larger board will be a huge help. We also find it helps to size up your foil if you are looking to get on foil easier. How much do you weigh? You may want to consider the 3 blade prop kit for more thrust. -Tucker
i think you should takeoff in a flater wave first, and then pump to the wave.

The price is a touchy subject… is it really worth the expense? It seems expensive for what it is and no doubt PRC is going to hit the market any time soon with half price products, just as efficient and reliable…
The only question is when.
I guess we shall see. Although I'm not sure how much costs can be cut without sacrificing performance, reliability, and runtime. It seems from my POV that we may need to see a larger quantity of scale or improved battery technology sometime in the future for that to happen. Thus far, I haven't seen anything coming to market which would be competitive. -Tucker

But apparently if you did… there are a few (one of them being connection remote / engine depending on your board…)
I’m not against profit, if I can’t afford it I won’t but at this price, after sales and problem solving have to be at 150%…
@@drcool56 Yes, board choice and rider technique/knowlege is an important variable in ease of use. There are however a few boards which are more problematic. That issue should be resolved with the antenna they are launching this summer.
