Hmm...I always saw a distinct difference between normal Gamzee and sober Gamzee. I would keep the normal Gamzee like that, but when he is sober, I'd sort of ever-so-slightly lower the growl, ever-so-slightly remove the southernesque accent, and apply a bit more breath to it, also trying to make it sound just a bit more like the Grand Highblood, so that he really shows that he's fitting into the role his ancestry depicts, but not too much as to depart from his capricious character.
My little brother is into voice acting now and then, he specially LOVES your Gamzee voice and this explanation will surely helo him out. Thanks, man! Keep rocking on like that.
