  • The “Bonanza” theme song was written by songwriters Jay Livingston and Raymond Evans. It was the theme for the Western television show “Bonanza,” starring Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, and Michael Landon. As NBC’s longest-running western and the second-longest-running western series on US network television, the show ran for 14 years, from 1959 to 1973.
In 1961, Al Caiola and His Orchestra released a single of the “Bonanza” hit song. Johnny Cash and his friend Johnny Western rewrote the lyrics in 1962, and Cash recorded and released a single of his version in the same year. In 1963, Cash and Western again rewrote their own lyrics, this time using the Livingston and Evans theme. Out on the Ponderosa Ranch, pianist Charles Manning improvises the theme song “Bonanza.”
