  • While the world is in crisis, there is a man who thinks the future is as bright as it can be. Peter Diamandis, author of the book Abundance and co-founder of Singularity University, sees how technology can soon provide all basic needs such as energy, clean drinking water and food for the growing world population, with ease.
    Original title: Overvloed
    But the ideas of Peter Diamandis go beyond specific technological solutions. He sees a world in which technological developments will be moving at an ever higher rate. As in the field of healthcare, where the use of data and smartphones make it possible to monitor one's health, not once in a while, but constant. The consequences of this are hardly visible to many.
    This documentary explores the world of ever faster growing technological development, in which major changes can happen overnight, and investigates if technological developments that are just around the corner will be able to solve the world’s major problems within the next 20 to 30 years. Will we soon live in a world of abundance?

    There are permaculture projects that have turned deserts into flourishing landscapes with out the use of irrigation water, Not only do these flourishing edible landscapes thrive without irrigation, they actually accumulate groundwater as well as creating creeks and ponds. Why invest in expensive technology when the same thing can be accomplished in a few years using plants that feed people and that create habitats that support diverse life forms including healthy microorganisms, insects, reptiles, birds and mammals.

    Very rare to see an optimistic perspective about our future especially in a day and age where everyone else seems to be predicting doom and gloom of civilization. It's reassuring to see there are good people who are actually helping us progress forward towards materializing a better future. Though, it is still unfortunate that their work doesn't get the larger recognition it deserves. It makes us realise that even small things done can bring major changes and tells us to work and move towards our future with conscientiousness in our minds and hopes in our hearts. Again,(in my opinion) VPRO the only one who brings to us a fresh flavour among all stale & mundane subjects of journalism these days.

      Hey Mriganka Dey,
      Where are you located?
      In October in Amsterdam there is a conference with Naomi Klein and Yanis Varoufakis talking about "how to save the world", can you believe it?!
      We are pretty sure you can access Ted conferences or other great conferences from everywhere in the world, you just have to look for it. The greatest changes happen through sharing knowledge.

    Hello everyone!
    Tonight we hope to give a good dose of optimism, or at least some good food for thought. We are curious what your reaction will be to Peter Diamandis. Do you also believe in A future of abundance?
    Remember, to see the subtitles, you have to use the captions function on the CZcams video player. The captions allow us to subtitle our documentaries in 3 languages, and hopefully soon more!
    Next Sunday we will publish a documentary about the Cradle to Cradle concept, leading to this not really appetizing title: “Waste is food”. It’s a 2007 documentary, yes, but what is really striking when watching it is how ideas expressed then as inspirational are now part of our daily lives, and we’re not even blinking about it.

    The only way we will have a future of abundance is if the people in power stop being so greedy and give back to the masses, I hope we have a future of abundance however if history has taught us anything at the peak of any empire greed and corruption end up destroying that empire. I hope one day we are able to truly evolve to a final frontiering species but that will take along time. /drops mic

  • @Innomen
    @Innomen Před 6 lety

    Basically we could have had this if every country that scaled coal and oil scaled fission instead. (Like France.) Solar is just one route to energy abundance, indirect fusion basically. (The same way geothermal is indirect fission.) Ultimately it's a stepping stone to fusion, even if we skip fission out of sheer ignorance.
    This is indeed very simple. Fission/fusion(direct or indirect) to power the robots, AI to run and design the robots, the abolition of software patents/copyright to allow us all access to the robots, and a basic income to distribute the robots and their produce.
    A renaissance is coming.
    Technology would be progressing much faster if it wasn't for the religion of intellectual property law. The great bulk of human progress right now is basically the result of us collectively remixing the whole of the public domain. Once we can scrape off the patent leeches and ticks making it literally illegal to add their precious hoarded colors to human pallet progress will explode.
    Put simply humanity will only tolerate this level of greed for so long. Every software, drug, and food patent is a monopoly that could lead to hydraulic despotism. Either we'll embrace the capitalist side and patent monopolies will implode from a libertarian power vacuum and corporate espionage, or we'll revolt and simply depose the rich Bastille style. (assuming peaceful reforms fail of course.)
    The patent monopolists are the new aristocracy and they will not last.
    One way or the other the church of the patent will fall. Thus humanity's future is literally as bright as the sun.

    0.34 seconds, basic needs of all the people in the world, "food, energy, clean water, basic health care, & education". So if all these will be TOTALLY FREE, there is only 1 thing missing off that list which should be a HUMAN RIGHT. "A home" Each and every person on this planet should be given a HOME. There should not exist homeless old people. Ageing and retirement should not be a fear to some of us. Some are lucky and have a home handed down to them from parents or grandparents, but some arent so lucky and never had a good enough job to save for a house so we should all be given a home to grow old gracefully and peacefully and die in our own homes NOT on the streets ;)

    Actually, Capitalism requires a certain level of Scarcity in order to function and maintain profit & constant growth. If we were to truly provide an abundance of clean, efficient goods and services (which, we definitely could do right now), the system would breakdown on itself. This is because cyclical consumption is needed at all times to maintain profit. (For instance, products are designed to be relatively inferior so that customers will require new ones in a short amount of time. If durability was factored in properly, companies and industries could easily lose their market share. This is evident in the way Big Oil tries to suppress clean energy initiatives.) There is inherently corrupt and destructive forces in the system we perpetuate. This is why we've reach a point where the market system can't handle revolutionary technologies anymore. It's suppressing the best ideas, while pushing out more consumerism. .....For an idea of how to move around this obstacle and build an abundant world, watch the movie "Zeitgeist Addendum". Also, research The Venus Project, the lifelong work of a man named Jacque Fresco.

      @BiggySeth Před 6 lety

      Winter Haydn well thats not how capitalism has worked in america.
      Think of it; in the U.S its nearly IMPOSSIBLE to starve to death. Why? because of technology has made food and water so abundant that even homeless people can easily get food for free, they even get free places to sleep and free clinics for minor illness.
      I think what will happen eventually is that money will stop finding reason to be used and the need to make it and spend it will become less and less.
      Dont get me wrong capitalism will still exist ofcourse but it won't be nesseary to survive off it virtually.
