I was 14 in 1964 when the house of the rising sun came out,and that was the first song I learned to play,now at 72 I can still remember all the cords but I can no longer play due to arthritis,thank you for this memory,you made my day.

Almost 55 years old here, taught myself chords as a kid, only to find out later, they had letter names, & I didn’t “invent” them after all. I play by ear, 9 different instruments so far, & learn by watching, but can’t really do bar chords up the neck on guitar, or vibrato on the violin, so this is right up my alley!!! Thank you so much!!! I play for enjoyment, not for others who know better.

I like to play 4 string hits on down stroke, counting 1, 2, & 3. Then 3 string hits on the upstroke, counting 4, 5, 6. Fits a 3/4 (or 6/8) timing as in the opening of this video. There are so many chord changes in this song that it makes a good work-out for the fingers. Thanks for the great video.

After the E, add the 4th finger on the 3rd fret B string and strum again, as a bridge to the next line. Nice extra touch, and easy.

Great lesson Sharon, and for those of you who want to hear the heavy metal version from the 70's played with just one finger and plenty of distortion and sustain through a valve amp look up Frijid Pink - House of the Rising Sun, its well worth it, years ahead of their time. Its in the style of what Marilyn Manson would do today.

Great easy lesson to follow, nice and slow so we can watch the frets, but that's when I spotted an error, so which is correct? Sharon, when you demonstrate the E, you say one thing and do another. My own teacher does the same thing all the time, so when I get home I wonder why the song sounds odd. I love the Mahalo lessons, thanks for all the help :-)
