Kendo training is similar to katana (sword) training. You can use the sword or bokken (bokuto) or shinai.

This video literally improved my axe chopping ability. My blade bites a full 1/2 inch deeper into wood when I use my shoulders to snap the blade forward instead of my wrists. The way you explained this really makes it obvious: use the large muscles in the shoulder instead of the arms. Thanks for the lesson!

@@KendoGuide I have a question. Can I used a dumbbell for this?
Finally not some stupid american "ULTIMATE KATANA MASTER DESTRUCTION" wannabe on youtube who all western societies think is high and mighty, this man right here is the example to follow when practicing kendo
Thank you for your kind words! I will keep providing and sharing what I know and learned from senseis!
Im not asian at all, im latin and filipino
Christianag101 u r half asian
It has to be Japanese bcos it's in their blood.. an even American who were raised (note: not born) in Japan admitted than he cannot still understand the art of Japanese swords though he has been practicing Kendo for decades.
TJay Art not true sir.
Gotta love this guy, It makes me smile everytime he says, "but we don't do that in Kendo"
They be using katana replicas whilst me here using sticks at home
Thanks for your comment! It's OK to stick to the sticks 👍
@@KendoGuide yes and I have been practicing and increasing the weight of each one so I can handle it better I am going to try and beg my mom for one so I can practice I was even able to cut several fruits in the air from my training!
They used sticks for thousands of years to practice, welcome to real life.
@@morgeenee811 No, they use bamboo swords called shinai and what sensei imafuji is carrying is an iaido. I believe they don't use a blunt katana for kendo training. iaido for the art of iai.

is there any videos that soley work on the first kendo kata as I'm learning it at the moment for my first grading

does the crooked outlet annoy anyone else
Fernando deVargas Thanks, now I can’t unsee it 😅
lmao
It's because it isn't real. Think about it, who needs an outlet in a dojo? It's a secret doorway to hide the weapons.
@@davidhokett yeah pretty good answer too me
Holy shit, OP was 5 years ago
I bought a bokken when I was about 14 and it has just been sitting there, I now bought a real Katana the other day but I know I need to practice with my wooden stick first.
Be careful with the real sword. If you don't know how to use it, you are going to hurt yourself and others.
Kendo Guide appreciate your kind and honest teaching, these is literally no critiques I can make towards your humble teaching
You can also invest in a aito to practice with. A shinken or sharpened steel sword whether it be a katana or wakisaki etc are very dangerous. Practice a little each day, it is very rewarding and meditative as well.
Thanks to you i started practicing sports in general, i had real problems with my breathing in the past and when i started kendo at home it gave me a goal to start working on my breathing and after that i started jogging and swimming all this was thanks to kendo, i'll always be thankful to this video for making me care not only about kendo but about my health in general... it's been a year since i started and met some really cool people, it's just life changing.
Wow! Thank you! Great to hear that kendo helped you with your health! I went over how to breathe with my members at Patreon this morning. I am not instructing. I am relearning things by having being asked questions! Love it!
I'm about to start practicing Kendo. I know next to nothing so it's really comforting to find such a helpful guide to know what I'm getting into, and hopefully to use as a future reference. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu 🙇🏻♀️

LOL! I've seen one of those videos!
I've seen a guy cut it exactly horizontal so no water spills onto the floor, but there's still surface tension in the water on the edge of the jug.
I'm scared that this sword will end my whole career
I recently found out of these arts (kendo and iaido) and I'm just in love, I'm still trying to learn more about the two of them so I can hopefully start practicing them one day, very informative video!
Who knew this was going to be super relevant 8 years later?
You're an excellent teacher!

I'm just getting back into sword arts after a very long hiatus and I'm glad I found this. One might have to sift through a lot of faulty information and instruction on the internet; like in days past where all we really had were martial arts magazines. But, these kinds of gems make the pursuit worth it! I'm saving this one.
I'm using these videos to learn kendo and I've learnt so much and am loving kendo
You seem like a very good teacher, and you remind me of my former teacher.
DMInfernoGR Thank you!
I love this guy, he is very clear and repeats what he says so it's easy for me to follow and understand, especially when I have a slow learning process.
Thank you for the lesson I have started my journey of disciplining my mind and spirit. I will stay on the path!
5:58 is very important.
One of the first things i was taught in aikido.
Great video imafuji sensei , i hope you are well.
Watching in 2018, this by far the best katana lesson I’ve found so far.
Thank you!
I’m gonna be the coolest enlightened uncle
XD NOICE
Always gonna be the uncle referenced at parties for the time to beat up 6 bullies at the same time with a Bokken
Really glad to have found your videos. I have always been interested in learning kendo and recently got something to begin practicing at home with. Im currently overweight and find that motivation to move and lose weight is hard to find so im hoping that practicing your teachings at home in my backyard will help me lose weight and perhaps one day join a dojo to truly hone my skills in this art. Amazingly clear and detailed teachings like yours really are what help keep the art alive and keep bringing in new people such as myself to learn it.
I like this teaching style. A lot of teachers on the internet just show you very basic moves and don't go into detail with why you do things in a specific way, or what the actual moves and stances are called, not like some guy who watches anime and shows off his moves like he can teach, or someone who teaches casual and simple moves without any real substance. It reminds me of my old Japanese teacher. She does kendo and likes to talk about it, and she is very good at it. We're essentially getting a paid lesson for free. Thank you sir
I really enjoyed watching this, you're a very good Sensei! The pace of the lesson is very helpful. Thank you

SpeedZtarDeluxe Thank you for your kind words! Kendo is not very well known to the world yet so many misunderstand it. And since people don't know about it, they tend to learn the wrong kendo.
