    Heath Ledger didn’t actually take his own life, he was going through mental health issues and said that since playing the joker, he couldn’t sleep, his mind kept going while his body was exhausted, so he started taking sleeping pills and to much of it. He overdosed. (He also said that the joker was the most fun he’s ever had playing a character, it just took a lot of energy out of him with his mental health issues).

      Indeed Heath's death happened by accident, he wasnt suicidal and didnt mean to take his own life. He overdosed by accident.
      But in way I guess you can say that this role took his life, because he put so much effort and work on it that it made the problems he had before worse. Jack Nicholson had actually warned him about the role, although I guess that was more of a joke he made.

    • @oslafoirausuebutuoy5457
      @oslafoirausuebutuoy5457 Před rokem +9

      There is a theory btw that Dent knew the Joker was holding the hammer and that was the whole point, he was supposed to notice. The joker was doing the same thing to Dent that Dent did the whole film to other people prior to that: offering a fake opportunity with the coin. The toss of the coin was useless because Dent never had a real chance of killing the joker, just like Dent never gave a real chance to other people before that with the trick coin. Basically the joker was proving the point he made earlier to Dent: random chance is the only real equalizer, it is the only fairness possible, by stopping the hammer the joker was preventing it to prove his point. From that moment on Dent starts actually using random chance instead of "making his own luck".

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Před rokem +1

      I've heard that theory, but I don't think it's accurate. I think the finger-placement is coincidental. First, hammers have a lot more force than you might expect, so holding it with a finger, especially in that position, probably isn't happening (even the manuals for such weapons strenuously insist that de-cocking should be avoided at all costs, and if it must be done, you do it by putting your whole hand in between the hammer and the chamber, not by relying on one finger). Second, it simply doesn't follow from what we know of Joker's character. He doesn't offer false choices, because he doesn't want the people who choose to do horrific things to have the excuse of pretending they were forced to do it. Tricking people doesn't serve his purpose, which is to offer indisputable proof of his assertion that human civilization is, as he says, "a bad joke".

    • @oslafoirausuebutuoy5457
      @oslafoirausuebutuoy5457 Před rokem +1

      @@michaelccozens It would make sense if the whole point of that specific thing was to change Dent's mindset, not to prove a point about civilization (there was no audience there except Dent after all). I think the Joker wanted to prove a point about human nature with the boats, not necessarily with Dent. I think Dent was an ace up his sleeve. In case the joker didn't manage to fulfil his goal, he would make sure all the criminals went free, undoing Batman and Dent's legacy, and destroying a symbol of justice for the city in the process.
      I don't know much about guns so afaik you could be right about the hammer. If you are it could be a mistake or it could be that the whole thing wasn't intentional, idk. I was just explaining a popular theory.

      @@oslafoirausuebutuoy5457 Your explanation is appreciated, as is taking my counterpoint in the spirit intended. It's troubling how often these kinds of rational disagreements can turn into rancorous personal feuds. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt on that count!
      You raise interesting points, but I'm not sure the one about there being no audience in that Dent/Joker moment holds. Had Dent killed Joker in that moment, the info would almost certainly have been quickly discovered and disseminated, thus destroying Dent's reputation (as would have happened anyway if Bats didn't take the fall for the people Harvey did eventually murder). And that was Joker's goal, because Harvey was the last gasp for legitimate hope for the city and the system that supported it. Whether or not the mobsters Harvey arrested went free was incidental; once the rot of despair was established, it would spread fatally, either quickly or slowly. Joker didn't really care if he was there to see the final inevitable stages, as long as he knew they were now unavoidable.
      Dent was less a goal for the Joker than a weapon; he was the method by which Joker would destroy Gotham, and the myth (to him) of any social nature beyond the Hobbesian that condemns human existence to being "nasty, brutish, and short".
      Nolan really made quite a masterpiece here. It holds-up on a lot of levels.

      Batman is a hard criminal full stop. He's a criminal that uses his criminal activity as a means of reducing the crime rate but he's a criminal nonetheless.
      That's the point of the movie; interrogating if solving crime by flagrantly violating the law is conducive to long-term peace.
      The film itself doesn't quite land on a definitive conclusion to the question because it's a hard one to answer but this is why I snicker and face palm everytime I hear somebody asking "How is Batman a criminal?"

      It's a great story, but it's been debunked by Nolan himself. The whole scene went as planned; it's just that the insurance people tend to get twitchy when you start detonating building-collapsing charges within yards of a movie star with potentially billions of dollars in future earnings for which their estate may sue you if you blow them up. So they separated the charges; little visual fireworks when Heath's close, big demo charges when Heath's finally out-of-range.

    If you see an actor wearing eyeliner on screen, it’s a good tell that they might have been trained in the theatre or had classical training. They eyeliner is used to make stage actors eyes visible to the audience for expressions. If they didn’t wear it, then from the audience perspective, you wouldn’t be able to tell if they’re eyes are even open.
