  • Whilst their Champions League and title rivals Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United spend big, Liverpool are yet to flex their financial muscles this summer.
    A failed bid for Timo Werner has been followed by an inconclusive attempt to sign Thiago Alcantara, with Liverpool's finances reportedly causing them problem.
    In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Liverpool's most recent accounts, their transfer spending, and why Jurgen Klopp and his Premier League title winning team haven't invested heavily just yet.

      Its nothing to do with not having money IMO. I watch MLB as well as football and Liverpools owners in MLB and so far in Premier League use "moneyball" strategy. You can see it with unfancied signings like Matip and Milner as well as the big signings they have made like VVD.
      It would take a very long comment to explain what moneyball is but long story short Boston Red Sox have gone from failing to win a World Series in 100 years to winning 3 in 15 years.
      So if you are Fenway sports you are thinking "Why change a proven succesful strategy"

      It's quite simply, not many people outside of Scotland and Ireland were interested in the league from the 80's onwards.
      So there was just no reason for multi million sponsorship deals to invest since it wasn't financially viable to get their money back from sales and merchandising. Therefore they had significantly less money for proper training facilities and experience to further advance the clubs and the league.

      @wildebest There is no evidence at all that Abramovich wants to sell up. We've had all this during the past 15 years that he would lose interest when certain goals were achieved. The 'sugardaddy' jibe often gets trotted out but the guy is not stupid. John Henry has injected £100m into Liverpool for the stadium expansion. Abramovich has put huge amounts for team strengthening although Chelsea have had to comply with FFP since 2011. Their business model is not that dissimilar in that that they are investing in a growing concern. If Abramovich sold up, he would recoup all that he put in plus a hefty profit on top. The same is true for FSG. Other owners have taken a different approach, borrowing heavily against the clubs assets and using profits for their own immediate benefit.

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger Před 3 lety

      @wildebest There was a lot of press talk about Jim Ratcliffe making a formal bid but Roman allegedly wanted offers of above £2.1bn. The bottom line is, even if he did decide to sell, the club would simply change hands from one very wealthy owner to another. As said, the club has complied with FFP regulations since they were brought in and that is without stadium naming rights or the other 'clever accounting' going on at the Etihad. From the very outset of his takeover, it was always the intention that the club would be self-sustaining in time. Even these recent purchases have had to be balanced out in the accounts. The excellent Swiss Ramble site explains how it's been achieved.
      twitter.com/SwissRamble/status/1300321535178289152 Personally, I think Abramovich got the hump with H.M. Government with the visa delay and Yes, he may have wanted at one point to cut all ties to the UK. Bruce Buck, the club chairman has said his commitment was as great as ever. The team has gone through more turbulent times in the past and he hasn't chucked the towel in. The new stadium plans are also a sign he may be around a while yet.

      @wildebest Not sure how you come to the conclusion it is finished, if they are 3rd or 4th. There is a competent team and manager, and while they can't outspend some of them, smart recruitment has been a forté that got them into this position and while it is a self-sustainable club it is a financially healthy club with a revenue that is only £2 mil behind City. LFC have doubled their revenue in the past 6 years and is above £500 mil. Spurs owe more than a bil to the banks, Utd owe £500 mil, Chelsea owe £1.3 bil to Abramovich, and City's project has derailed and when Pep leaves, they will need to reset, because their setup is the blueprint of Barcelona, even prior to Pep joining, and they have failed a lot of investments in recent years. And when Klopp leaves, Pep Lijnders will likely take over.

    • @janniknielsen9292
      @janniknielsen9292 Před 3 lety

      @@chelseacharger If Abramovich sells the club, the club will be weighed down by the £1.3 bil the club owe him. And with the uncertainty of the future income for all, Chelsea will continue to be reliant on selling players to balance the books. Due to the pandemic clubs has been allowed two years to comply with FFP, and at large why Chelsea has gone out and spent big, while it is a risk, even if they sold big with Hazard and Morata. SwissRamble forgot Pulisic in his accounts, but yeah it is a great read.

    As a non-Liverpool fan I think they’re being quite smart about Thiago, yes he’s a fantastic player. But he’s not obviously a Klopp player, he’d have to spend time learning a system where his creative role is usually played by the fullbacks and Firmino rather than a CM who has to be more commanding and aggressive like Henderson, no doubt he can do that Flick’s philosophy similarly stresses pace, pressing and possession he still isn’t somebody who’s gonna immediately fill a hole and improve a team. He’s also nearly 30 and would be on large wages and difficult to sell on later when he’s older. Signing him would be a statement to both the first team and the wider footballing world that they intend to stay at the top but I think the club being smart to say that he’s only valuable up to a certain amount

    We need to make signings more for depth and not to our starting 11. We’re linked with Daka, Sarr and Thiago and if we somehow get all three of them this window, we’ll be ok for backup. I would love to get Daka because he got 30 g/a in 31 games in the Austrian league and he’s only 21. Sarr would be amazing and him and Mane get on really well in the Senegal squad so he’d have someone to talk to if he did sign. And Thiago imo is one of the best midfielders in the world right now and to get him to replace Gini would be perfect. We already sorted out our LB spot by getting Tsimikas so all we need is a creative midfielder to replace Gini (Thiago) and 1 or 2 backup attackers (Daka and Sarr)

    i think signings are coming. I think we have to offload Grujic and Wilson before making any big signings. While Thiago would be a great signing I think a back up to Trent is more desperately needed. There isn't anyone who can cover in his position adequately (at least in terms of his attacking output; Gomez is obviously good defensively). Although maybe a more creative midfielder would help with the problem (although hopefully Keita can stay fit; when he gets a run of games he usually starts to tear it up and can provide a more incisive edge). We do also need a centre back to cover Matip and Gomez who have both suffered injuries. I know Fabinho can deputise there but I'd rather have him in midfield.
    Perhaps Minamino has finally properly arrived after bagging his first goal in the community shield. As I understand it, he can play multiple positions and can slot in up front.

    This honestly makes a lot of sense I really think we just need to bring in a few new players so we can rest our starters more. We need to bring in a back up striker or CF for Firmino because he played nearly match in the last 3 season. I would love to bring in Thiago yes £30 million but he’s 29 he’s a great player but if we could spend that money on a under the radar talent who’s a few years under around 23 or 24 we could make profit if they ever want to leave because they could be possible 27-28 or so on. I also think if we could off-load players like Shaqiri and Harry Wilson and possible Woodurn it would be really good for the team and fill those spots with current talent that we could really develop. But this doesn’t need immediate impact. I personally would only bring in a new CF Because there possibility Origi is leaving. Also Minamino is still adapting to his role he also can cover out wide but we need to bring in a CF or ST who are 25-26 to give Firmino a breather.

Part of why it took Liverpool 30 years to win another top flight domestic was due to bad financial handling before. Most of the players Liverpool have bought within the last 5 years have appreciated past their cost. City has bought several in the same span that have depreciated. They spent barely 90mil on defense this how much city did and yet city is still spending on defense. Fans are too reactive of whats going on outside their club without putting it into context.

    I really hope I'm wrong but the team looked flat towards the end of Jan before the lockdown and we need quality additions, Klopp is gambling on the kids to get him through this can either go well or go wrong and I have a feeling we will be fighting for a top 4 finish rathar than the league itself.
    I really really hope I'm wrong about this...

    I agree the stance on Thiago. But things might change if Barca comes knocking for Gini.
    While the idea of adding just one big name after being crowned is valid, we must not forget that we also released some squad players (Clyne, Lovren, Lalana). Minamino and Jones might be able to fill in for Lalana, Neco for Clyne, but I don't see any young player ready to take Lovren's fourth choice CB cover. Man City slipped to an unimaginable level last season because they didn't replace Kompany, and their squad depth in CB wasn't good enough.

    Counter argument: Liverpool won the league last season by 18 points. The closest competition other than City in 2nd were United, Chelsea, and Leicester, all within 3 points of each other, with United and Chelsea both on 66. That is a 33 point gap from 1st to 3rd. Liverpool's thinking (I would argue) is that they don't need to go spend crazy because we already have that gap. They can get better internally and more players are building up to being solid parts of the squad (Curtis Jones has been pretty impressive). Chelsea, for example's sake, were hit with a transfer ban that prevented them from doing any business for the one full window. They locked in Ziyech, and so spent no money really in January either. So they've been going ham since to make up for lost ground.
    Liverpool don't *need* to be spending big money. City will be competitive as usual, and Chelsea and United are trying to close that gap. Arguably Chelsea has (how well the signings work together remains to be seen, clubs have spent huge before and never settled into a rhythm), so the onus was on other clubs to try and go in and become competitive. At the very least Liverpool, and I would say City probably too, were sitting pretty after the season ended.
    33 point gap from 1st to the 3rd best club last season. Why do Liverpool need to spend big? Just because other clubs are? Really just because Chelsea are? Sancho to United hasn't happened, 48 mil for Van De Beek isn't all that 'major.' Chelsea go in for Werner, Havertz, Chillwell, and Ziyech, get Silva and Sarr on frees. Because they needed to do that to be competitive.
    If clubs feel the need to spend big for compulsion, whether out of competition with rivals or out of expectation, that's how you get a Barcelona-Coutinho disaster. I am perfectly content with Liverpool only signing Tsimikas so far. We don't need to be spending big just because other clubs are, if anything it's smarter to not do that. Wijnaldum to Barca sounds likely, if that happens then Liverpool bring in Alcantara (or a comparable midfielder if Alcantara doesn't work out), but where do Liverpool need to spend elsewhere? 55 million for a backup for Firmino? What is the point of that? At this point, Liverpool only needs to go in big if a big player leaves. So if Salah, or Van Dijk leave, and I don't know why they would under present circumstances.
    I hate how people bandy this argument around like its a legitimate indicator of anything. Liverpool won the league by such a huge margin that fans saying just because Chelsea go in that Liverpool should (or that Liverpool is cheap, or whatever it is) is absurd. Chelsea needed to make up that 33 point gap and this window is how they are trying to make that happen. 33 points is massive as a margin, and that was just 1st to 3rd. That is how dominant Liverpool and City have been. It is on other clubs to spend to catch up.

      warrior fight. I recall when Chelsea once finished 37 pts above Liverpool, the next season it was 19, the season after that 4 (or was it 7), anyway, point is things can change pretty fast.

Also, Liverpool aren't a "rich" club because they aren't state-subsidized by an oil power or funded by a Russian oligarch. The point is that, in this moment, it is wiser for Liverpool to not spend just out of media competition. Just because Chelsea is pouring money in doesn't mean Liverpool needs to. That would be a stupid response for them to have.

LFc fan and its cliche but I think this is the season where it will unravel abit because the squad does need more quality to keep improving etc but they literally are resting on their laurels this time regardless of the covid thing. i agree about thiago I really do, its very rare at a club now where you get a player who can instantly challenge and play right of the bat in the first team and make a difference/ this window really demines the season in my eyes because you forget lfc have just won 4 trophies in 13 months but that can only keep on happening if that squad improves and its freshened up. i say 3rd or 4th this year.
