    African Americans always seem to focus on their being no black players in hurling or gaelic football.Its not because we have segregation or especially racist in ireland its just that we are nearly all white as a nation.They are many black people here now ,but thats only recently and they come from basically soccer countries therefore don't have the skills for our native sports and don't know them so gravitate towards soccer instead.You see people from ethnic minorities on county teams at younger age level alot more and hopefully this will happen at adult senior level as well.You have to remember up on till twenty years ago ireland was a country you left not go to.

      I would argue that it's more that this footage is likely taken from an All-Ireland final - I played hurling (well, camogie...) since I was small, like most Irish people. It's not an easy sport to just pick up as an adult, and play at this kind of level. The dexterity and general skills required take a lot of time to develop, and as such, most immigrants in Ireland have simply not been there long enough to have been "grandfathered in" to the sport to this level, so to speak. I'm certain there are plenty of kids of various ethnicities playing it at a junior level, and I anticipate that we'll start seeing more players of various colours in due time in the adult leagues.
      That being said, the OP of the video didn't know this was Ireland at the time of posting, so I can forgive him for assuming a higher level of diversity, thinking it was in the U.S.

    There's a very good reason why you don't see people of colour in those clips. Up until about 20 years ago the population of Ireland was almost 100% white Irish. With immigration, Asylum seekers and refugees that figure is slowly changing. Through my job, I attend a lot of schools matches, both Hurling and Gaelic Football, some weeks up to 5 matches. There are more and more young Africans, Asians and Eastern Europeans playing our National Sports, it's great to see.
    I've seen some superb young players over the last few years who's parents are obviously not of Irish heritage.

    In hurling you can catch the ball but you can only carry it in your hand for four steps before you need to 'solo' it on your stick (hurley), which is when you balance it while you run. As you can see it's a very impressive skill. Hurling is an ancient Irish sport, but the modern version was codified in the 19th century. Along with Gaelic Football it's one of our national sports in Ireland.

(also, you can carry the ball for 3 paces, 'solo' the ball (sliotar, pronounced schlither) in the end of your stick (hurl) for as long as you want, and, most importantly, we do have a few non pasty white Irish people, including Syrians, coming up in the game. First, thank you for exposing so many of your viewers to the Irish national game of Hurling. As others have told you, hurling is the foundational game of most other field games. You referred to baseball, lacrosse, football (and futball!), and others - yes, they all came from the multi-millennial game of hurling. Although the Irish do play many other sports (especially rugby), Hurling is the national sport it is a fast, tough game with very few protections for the players who are ferociously swinging iron-hard Ash sticks around at shin level. And the ball is small - a little larger than a Quidditch Snitch. (And yes, Quidditch is rumored to be based on Hurling. Hope you enjoy the world’s olders field game!

      O'Learys lie but the stats don't - Kilkenny are by far the best. In the history of the All Ireland they've won more championships than any other county and since 2000 they've won 11 All Irelands - Cork have won 2 in the same period.

      @cyrildineen2048 Před 6 lety

      cahillgreg settle down there now kid. Kilkenny fortuitously had an amazing team in that period which just happened to coincide with the demise in Cork hurling of the same period due internal rows/strikes etc. Like Kerry it makes things a hell of a lot easier when a county concentrates on one code also with Cork dealing with both along with LOI football all and rugby. And lest we forget not one but-two doubles then the choice for most successful county really becomes a complicated affair.
      The Rebels are back on track and building. But let us not tarnish hurlings greatest rivalry by getting nasty. My grandad used to say it’s no achievement unless you skin the cats on the way Croake Park so there is a lot of respect for Kilkenny down these parts.

    To anyone outside Ireland who's interested, hurling semi-final on Sunday 5th August (Clare v Galway), and final on Sunday 19th.
    The All-Ireland Final will be between the winner of Sunday's (replay) match, and Limerick.
    Find an Irish bar near you (with real Irish people, I mean), and they'll either be showing the matches themselves or will be able to give you information.
    Or do an Internet search for "GAA hurling" plus your location.
    Most big cities around the world with Irish communities, especially the English-speaking world, have GAA clubs where you'll be welcome to watch.
