Hi Shweta, There is a query going inside my mind. If someone have thought of doing an MBA from past 2-3 years, and he has got experience of 2.6 yrs as software engineer with fixed package around 18. Still he we wants to persue an MBA, to change the job profile and land in management roles. So, my question is, will the current package before mba matters during discussion of package during MBA placements or not.

Hi Shweta, Thank you for reaffirming the coolness of the PM role. As a PM with 6 years of work-ex, I agree with everything you’ve said but I’d like to differ on one point. 1. 3:50 and 12:04 (Client Facing Part and Travelling): This is probably true when you’re an entry level/mid-career PM at a larger company like Walmart, Google, Amazon etc.. As a PM in a smaller B2B company, I cannot tell you how important it is to have regular customer interactions and client visits. A PM actually has the advantage of travelling extensively owing to customer visits and customer interviews to und how our customers are perceiving and using our Product. I can und why you said this owing to your network/friends working in a bigger company at entry levels post an MBA from an institute like IIMA.

Your video is highly biased in saying that only tech knowledge is important but the fact is that understanding the customers persona, defining the User Journey and testing with users are very key factors to product success. Design is a very important part of product development. Your tech knowledge will only help in knowing what is viable to develop.

Hi Shweta...just a minor query...when I surfed on the Amazon page of the "Tech Simplified" book...I got to know that this book's 1st edition got published this year itself (Januray, 2022), which I also verified using Author's LinkedIn profile...then how come everyone in your college would've used this book during Summers as 1) Summers of the latest batch (2021 admitted students) would've gotten over by December 2020 and the book got released 1 month post that (considering the fact that you're talking about your juniors' placements) 2) If you're talking with reference to your batch, then it's impossible as you're a 2020 pass-out which is 2 years earlier from the release of the book in the market...

As you said that for getting into PM roles,either you have to from a tech background or else you have to get tech experience if you're from a non tech background. So, CSE branch in graduation and few years of experience as a software engineer can get someone into PM role or the experience should be of project specific roles only?

This is one role which has more layers to it than meets the eye. To say it's the coolest job is taking things a step too far. Companies visiting colleges above XLRI, SIBM Pune etc offer this profile. If you're not able to crack that, chances are campus placements won't be offering this profile. There are a lot of variations to Product Manager roles too: 1. PM roles in Sales based orgs - HUL, Phillips etc 2. PM roles in Tech startups 3. PM roles in IT consulting - Thoughtworks, ZS associates etc 4. PM roles in traditional IT firms - Accenture, Infy etc Each comes with it own pros and cons. Money is good but responsibilities and pressure is high too (especially if one goes for options 1 or 2)

Product management is not that rosy as it sounds! Agreed that it might seem more appealing that consulting on some parameters but its definitely not for everyone. It require a lot of multi-tasking and high stakeholder management. You have to juggle multiple projects each on a different stages, with lot of teams demanding a lot of your time. For whoever wants to foray into PM role, please make the choice wisely
Sorry to burst the bubble early, but it's not at all a chill job. You are firefighting almost daily as a PM. It's mentally rewarding when features are a hit. That's all the motivation you need to undergo all the stress.

Hey Shweta, you might not like what I am about to say but the basis for this video itself is incorrect. Less Hours High Pay? This is too far away from reality. Such generalization is an error. I have been working as an Associate Product Manager for close to an year now and 'Less Working Hours' is the last thing that I'll associate with the role. Also, i don't know how you got to the conclusion that it is not a client facing role. PMs have to deal with a variety of stakeholders including clients.
So basically it is for PM Tech related companies only? Is it any Role for Non tech PM related to Manufacturing, Pharma or FMCG? #Shwetaarora #PM #PRODUCTMANAGEMENT

No all major companies hire direct mba grads - but mostly from top b schools.

As you said that for getting into PM roles,either you have to from a tech background or else you have to get tech experience if you're from a non tech background. So, CSE branch in graduation and few years of experience as a software engineer can get someone into PM role or the experience should be of project specific roles only?

This is one role which has more layers to it than meets the eye. To say it's the coolest job is taking things a step too far. Companies visiting colleges above XLRI, SIBM Pune etc offer this profile. If you're not able to crack that, chances are campus placements won't be offering this profile. There are a lot of variations to Product Manager roles too:
1. PM roles in Sales based orgs - HUL, Phillips etc
2. PM roles in Tech startups
3. PM roles in IT consulting - Thoughtworks, ZS associates etc
4. PM roles in traditional IT firms - Accenture, Infy etc
Each comes with it own pros and cons. Money is good but responsibilities and pressure is high too (especially if one goes for options 1 or 2)

Product management is not that rosy as it sounds! Agreed that it might seem more appealing that consulting on some parameters but its definitely not for everyone. It require a lot of multi-tasking and high stakeholder management. You have to juggle multiple projects each on a different stages, with lot of teams demanding a lot of your time. For whoever wants to foray into PM role, please make the choice wisely
Pl make a similar session on supply chain management/supply chain analytics. It will be very helpful to us.
Sorry to burst the bubble early, but it's not at all a chill job. You are firefighting almost daily as a PM.
It's mentally rewarding when features are a hit. That's all the motivation you need to undergo all the stress.

For sure, some PM companies come only in laterals, you won't be able to apply to them
Tq Ma'am for this information I have been waiting for it .... and I don't have tech exp but I am doing data science certification which will be done with relevant projects and progressing to ML ... will this kind of exp help me ... and one more thing is the kind of certification for PM role you suggested can be done during mba or before it ....
It can be helpful, and the certifications can be done before MBA. But work-ex is really preferred for PM roles

Hey Shweta, you might not like what I am about to say but the basis for this video itself is incorrect.
Less Hours High Pay? This is too far away from reality. Such generalization is an error. I have been working as an Associate Product Manager for close to an year now and 'Less Working Hours' is the last thing that I'll associate with the role.
Also, i don't know how you got to the conclusion that it is not a client facing role. PMs have to deal with a variety of stakeholders including clients.
So basically it is for PM Tech related companies only? Is it any Role for Non tech PM related to Manufacturing, Pharma or FMCG? #Shwetaarora #PM #PRODUCTMANAGEMENT
