  • In 1991, the Falkland Islands Government decided to create a day named after the former Prime Minister, in order that future generations of Islanders would remember the Prime Minister and her role at the time of the 1982 Falklands Conflict.
The 10th January each year commemorates the day Margaret Thatcher first visited the Islands in 1983, when she was awarded "the Honorary Freedom of Stanley and all Townships and Settlements throughout the Falkland Islands", in gratitude for her leadership in the liberation of the Islands from Argentinean forces in 1982.
On that day she said: “Today again the Union Jack flies over Port Stanley, and may it ever fly there. So we in the Falkland Islands and in Great Britain rededicate our lives to the cause of freedom and justice of people here and everywhere. We have given an example to the world, and hope to many of those who do not enjoy these great qualities. May we also act as a beacon of hope to them, that so long as we defend that which is ours now, they too one day may enjoy these great things”.
The first Margaret Thatcher Day was in 1992, which saw several important anniversaries, including the 10th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.
On 10th January in 2015 a bust of Lady Thatcher was unveiled by her son, Sir Mark Thatcher, next to the Liberation Monument in Stanley. The plinth supports a bronze plaque bearing the words spoken by Margaret Thatcher on 3rd April 1982: “They are few in number, but they have a right to live in peace, to choose their own way of life and to determine their own allegiance.”
