How to get the sound right.. Hope this helps as everyone always asks)
Okay so use the soft part of your thumb so you get a smooth, soft bottom end on the bass notes.
Flick the top three strings with your finger NAILS, so they are brighter and have more attack when you are down stroking, but pluck them with the soft tips of your fingers for a soft strum on the way back down. The combination will have a smooth low end with accented high end and smooth strumming between. Give it a try and let me know how that goes :)
When I play his songs I will instinctively change the EQ of what I’m playing by implementing more or less fingernail, down stroking with nail or picking with my fingers (purposefully avoiding the nail) to get a very soft or bright melody at times. Over time this just becomes natural and instinctual. If you find this hard, don’t worry, I was trained in classical guitar for about 10 years before I started playing electric properly, so that carried over to me and I have always been able to do it since I started playing Elliott Smith, but if you aren’t experienced it just takes a bit of time!!! :)
Give this general idea a try until you find how it works, maybe even just strumming the same chord or section until it feels good. Let me know how this goes below and share tips to help others. :)
Plz do a cover you have a really nice voice and can u do lesson for unlucky charm if possible and I am getting a little better at the strumming part thanks a lot
@@BirenTamang-ou6jt i already have a cover on the channel if you’d like to check it out :)
@@asherjohnston597 you don’t 💀
He played it on a guitar that kept going out of tune, which makes it unique
Its in like 432 hz
man you’ve gotta do more elliott tutorials, this was so well done. i usually don’t like guitar tutorials on youtube as i find them hard to follow but this felt so simple and you explained everything nicely. plus the sound feels very accurate
I'm glad it was helpful 😊 will have a look at doing more soon
@@Jasonlimitless ❤️❤️❤️cant wait
and you're not annoying, there's a blond guy teaching dagger by slowdive, oh my fucking god, so annoying it was hard to believe a grown man could behave like that.
This was clear and to the poitn, thank you.
Although I wouldn't have minded seeing your other hand or you talking a bit about the rhythm and what to with the fingerpicking
Elliott sure likes his chromatic guitar lines. Glad to see you back man. Your singing sounds lovely too.
Thanks dude, have been away for a hot minute haha. Hope you've been well 🙏🙏🙏
You doing that slide at the beginning keeping the pointer finger on the first fret is so much harder than it looks. Makes me respect his chord changes and music even more
Dude you sound exactly like Elliot Smith. It’s awesome
the man that taught me condor ave. i just had to check in and see what you'd been up to and look at this: another of my favorite elliott tunes to learn. thank you so much!
Amazing tutorial- throughout the whole thing I was thinking ‘how the hell did Elliott come up with this?’ It’s quite mind-boggling to think that someone can have such a knowledge of the fretboard, especially in such an unusual tuning
I could not crack the code on reading the tab for this song that I love so much. Thank you for this simple and straightforward breakdown, I can now work on enjoying it on a different level!
Go get it, it’s a beautiful song to play
what a phenomenal tutorial and you sing very well. thank you so much! look forward to playing this for years to come.
I'm always so happy to hear comments like this from people who love Elliott's music, hope it was helpful
when you started singing 🤯🤯🤯 oh my god you sound so good!!! your voice is such gift
@@nameless1763 thanks !
I don't think I have seen someone do a Tutorial on this one before on yt. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful 🥰
Thank you for sharing this! His songs can be tricky to learn from tab alone so this is very helpful. Definitely my favorite from this album next to White Lady and Christian Brothers.
Thank you for this, i mean it. THIS ROCKS MAN.
This is awesome thanks!
Great job, thanks for sharing.
Amazing tutorial. thank you.
going to copy the lyrics here so i can practice it better if that’s not a problem. great video and beautiful singing by the way
They're waking you up to close the bar
The street's wet, you can tell by the sound of the cars
The bartender's singing "Clementine"
While he's turning around the open sign
"Dreadful sorry, Clementine"
Though you're still her man
It seems a long time gone
Maybe the whole thing's wrong
What if she thinks so and just didn't say so?
You drank yourself into slow-mo
Made an angel in the snow
Anything to pass the time
And keep that song out of your mind
Oh, my darling
Oh, my darling
Oh, my darling, Clementine
Dreadful sorry, Clementine
Dreadful sorry, Clementine
Thanks so much for this tutorial
Thanks for uploading this!
You're welcome 😇 hope you're well x
I wish for a strumming tutorial 🥲
that was sick thanks
I always end up finding you for elliott smith tutorials. U also gave me a good idea for a movie
What's the movie ?
@@Jasonlimitless Well i remember that video of you playing an elliott smith song and you had cuts on your arm. It made me think about how hands/arms are giving of someone’s circumstances. I thought it would be cool if there was a movie that only showed peoples hands, kind of charlie brown parent style, and it would be telling of how we communicate and stuff. Also kind of celebrating our uniqueness through our hands because you can have dirty hands, painted nails, or hands without fingers and stuff like that. Sorry if me mentioning that to you brings back any bad memories.
first of all, fck you, that was such a rude thing to say. And why would you assume anything, I have cuts on my arms from doing parkour and tree branches hitting me. And what a stupid movie by the way, fucking david lynch here@@Thelargermichaeljordan
Tysm for this there’s no way I would have had the patience to learn this by tab. Might I say you should time stamp all the parts next time and add a bit on the end where you play the whole thing so we can try and play along. Thanks again this was great!
12:07 time stamp for the bridge play through
Thanks for this tutorial! Your voice sounds really good too
You're very welcome and thank you 🙂
This is so helpful! I started playing the guitar 4 days ago so I have no idea how to even begin to read tabs. Im making progress on finger placement but my main issue is I have no idea what to do with my strumming hand lmao.
and especially with elliott is a huge deal I only learned how to play between the bars properly because there's a good tutorial by a guy called ethan. Without the fingerpicking and strumming it's never going to sound good
You have an incredible voice
thank you x
Yeah, you should do original songs and upload them on bandcamp! I will pay gladly
Thanks alot for this tutorial 🙏- really beautiful song. Elliot was such a talent.
In this tuning - Do you know what chord comes out when playing all string open?
D
most other people and eliott in some video doesnt play the 7th barre in dreadful sorry, which is correct?
Thanks for this, really well organised! I notice in a few live versions there's a satisfying high hammer on the "clementine" at 14:06. Is that just the pinky sliding or something else? Anyway, look forward to your future elliott smith tutorials, I'm having trouble with some of the arpeggiations on Talking to Mary so maybe you could add that to your list!
That tuning has a Nick Drake feel to it I wonder if he was going for that at all.
Thanks for the lesson. How did you learn how to hybrid pick/strum like you did in the verses?
I trained in classical guitar when I first started playing guitar so that helped a lot
If you need help with it practice alternate picking with your fingers so index middle finger and middle and third finger. Once you are good at that just experiment strumming with your thumb and alternating your fingers
@@Jasonlimitless Alright, thanks!
@@unoptimalvods5792 hope it helps, once you get used to it it's fun and easy 😊
I cannot figure out how to strum and pick the melody at the same time. Any tips?
You strum with your thumb and pick with alternating fingers, it just takes a little practice
@@Jasonlimitless Shit I've been playing it for years without picking! I'ma practice it your way it does sound better
@@protomarabou with Elliott's songs always best to pluck with the fingers ❤️

Hey Jason, are you there buddy?
0:54 I’m trying to play this chord but for me it sounds like the G chord is overpowering everything else, it doesn’t sound high pitched like it does in the song and I’m not sure what to do💀
Okay so use the soft part of your thumb so you get a smooth, soft bottom end. Flick the top three strings with your finger NAILS, so they are brighter and have more attack. The combination will have a smooth low end with accented high end. Give it a try and let me know how that goes :)

@@Jasonlimitless I also noticed another thing, I was playing the wrong chord the whole time! I had my middle finger on the third fret instead of the second
this song killin my tiny hands 😭
It's a little tricky but keep practicing and it should be easy in no time!
Ok, so I got to know that Nosivin Schnell cleans the nose really quickly, even thought I was interested in Elliott's song.
What? lol
@@Jasonlimitless thanks for the tutorial!
The nose cleaning was in the ad on your video.
@@blerocs haha you’re welcome I was confused as to what you mean
are you lwoer than all the notes you say you are tuned to?
Wat?
@@Jasonlimitless sorry i wrote it so bad 😅
I tuned to the notes you say but we sound so different when i play , maybe you tune to A434hz? Made it way harder to follow haha but i still got it thankx for the how to man!
I can't pick while strumming with my thumb. somebody help me
Yes you can. Sit there for one hour and practice it. Don’t stop after 5 or 10 minutes of getting frustrated. Sit there and do it for at least 30 minutes. Then do that every day for 1 week and you’ll EASILY do it. After a while you realise you can play ANYTHING on guitar, just some things take more time than others.
Even if it means playing 10 times slower
@@Jasonlimitless Thank you so much, this gave me motivation and I will try this. But İ have a question: When you are strumming with your thumb while picking, which strings are you strumming? When I strum with my thumb my whole hand moves and I can't pick the right strings. What should I do?
@@ipekk8314 hard to say depending on the chord. Usually though it’s a case of strumming the bass strings with your thumb whilst picking the melody/ high strings. For example if you were playing an E major, you would strum the bottom 3 strings and pick the top 3 strings.
If you were playing an A minor so the bass starts on the A string and you are only paying 5 of the strings, thumb for the first two or 3, then fingers for the remaining strings.
This is just a rough guide hope it makes sense.
One thing to think about, is when you play with the thumb, it usually has a softer an more bass tone to it, and when you pick it’s brighter so you can use that to dial in how it sounds to your own ears.
@@ipekk8314 I am currently away from the Uk but maybe when I am back I will add a video play through so people can watch my right hand
Yeah just a disclaimer.. if using a tuner to tune to this go on the flatter side if you want to match his guitar...that really threw me off at first.
Yeah, it’s flat by a lot. Same thing was messing me up. Great tutorial though! Thanks!
@@isabelgoyer6140 yeah I had an adventure with it lol
Should have waited a little
Bit on tuning
Sorry what do you mean?
hey man I just meant that i wanted to tune my guitar with you because at the time I couldn't find my tuner but you went through the strings to fast lol ...but funny story I ended up at your page looking for clementine tuning so i could work on one of my original songs that is in that tuning, very convoluted i know, I apologize. Anyways check out my version of clementine...I love this song and i think its great that your teaching people how to play it ... czcams.com/video/g1f2hncBxoM/video.htmlsi=RLKu46SrQhmbCZaE
Am I the only one who has tuned to the correct tuning and my guitar sounds off tune compared to him? What am I doing wrong??
If you tuned it using a tuner it sounds weird, it needs to be a bit out of tune to sound right
Okk!! Thanks :)
@@miguelrolo8742 let me know if this fixes the issue. I find it’s best to tune one string to a tuner then tune the rest to the first string
@@Jasonlimitless Yup it worked! Thanks so much for the attention and for the tutorial man! Greetings from Portugal
Too hard
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks this
Nothing is too hard, some things just take longer to learn than others. You can learn to play anything if you put the time in to practice.
Your guitar is very flat but otherwise thank you very much
no worries. new strings detuning to open C probably dropped a bit, long as you were able to learn the song that the main thing.
0:31
Tune it
The original song when Elliott played is actually a bit flat and out of tune. If you tune it perfectly it sounds sharp and wrong, try it for yourself 👍
@@Jasonlimitless oh yeah, I heard he did it on a guitar that constantly fell out of tune. I’ve been messing around with this tuning a bit. It really helped. Thanks for what you’re doin.
can you just teach the song and not sing i’m here to learn the song, not you attempting to impress people with your mid singing 😭
I don’t make any money uploading these videos, I just do them occasionally to help other fans of Elliott smith as I’m a big fan, for fun. You’ve got some real issues and entitlement to think you’re entitled to learn for free and also insult me for not teaching you the way you prefer for FREE on my video. You’re ‘here to learn the song’ what makes you think I am here to serve you?
Instead please get better at guitar, clearly you aren’t that good and your ego is too big if I’m the one teaching and you’re the one struggling to learn. Let’s be honest, who’s playing this song better, me or you? Please improve your less than mid guitar playing, and please upload some videos of you singing if you aren’t too busy insulting people you are trying to learn from. I’m sure Elliott would love you. And if you come by London feel free to insult me to my face, I’m sure you wouldn’t. Thanks 👍
