  • In this episode, I finally discuss an issue so many people have been asking me to discuss for so long. My experience with anxiety medications. I used Paxil between 1996 and 2005. This is part 1 of a 3 part series detailing my experience. Today I talk about my position on medications, why I chose to use the medication in 1996, and what my initial experience was.
My experience with antidepressants and anxiety is mine. Yours may be different. Please keep this in mind.

If it was a chemical imbalance it would be there all the time anxiety comes and goes for me and there’s no test to measure the chemicals

Drew, you might not see this because this is an old video, but I just want to say thank you so much. I was told so many untrue things by doctors, and thankfully, I've discovered that it's honestly down to trauma I experienced (I didn't even know what I experienced (an addicted mom who was absent) WAS TRAUMA))! I've been going to therapy, but due to my mom's repeated relapses around this time of year, spring/summer tends to bring heightened feelings of panic, depression, POCD, etc. In "normal" times, I experience anxiety such as avoiding the grocery store, for example, but currently, I avoid everything from walks to going to get coffee to traveling. I'm currently working on willful tolerance, I promise! I'll have a span of 3 days where I willfully tolerate and feel so good! And then POCD or acute anxiety will hit me and bam it's like getting knocked down by a wave. Anyway, I'm also hoping to get off meds because I truly don't think they're helpful for me. In your next episode, you mention it cured panic, agoraphobia, etc. but my medication definitely hasn't for me (and I've tried several different kinds). Leading me to believe I have panic disorder due to past trauma. All of this is to just say thanks for your knowledge. I'm so grateful to be so much more informed by a former sufferer who is so honest. It's like having a "friend" in a time of need who's been there before and come out on the other side!

I did see this. And thank you for the comment. Just to clarify, I did not say it "cured" panic and depression. The medication absolutely changed how I felt, but if you go to the third video in this series you'll see the part where I talk about the cost of that change (for me). What medication did for me was mask my anxiety and depression. That's the best word I can think of to describe it. Maybe this clarification will help a little so you don't feel like there's something wrong with you because meds can't cure you. They didn't cure me either. Looks like you're doing the best you can in a difficult situation. Keep at it. All the little wins do count!

@@wendylawrence3297 that’s the best way to do it in my opinion. Little slivers at a time. You’ll be ok :) I’ve only been on Effexor for 2 months and it just didn’t work for me. I tried another medication for 5 months and still didn’t see any changes. I’m just not a pill person I guess, which is fine! I’d rather not be taking anything that can cause long term side effects

@@blaalb4 just weight gain. Which I worked so hard to lose 60 pounds two years ago so it’s frustrating. I’ve always been one to go the natural route. Never even took anything for a headache! But so many of my friends and family were persistent on me trying medication so I did and it didn’t make a difference at all. It could be both the med and your anxiety that are making you feel weird or off. Do you have less anxiety?

You didn’t take the Xanax because you were smart as hell for your time that’s why

I didn't take it because I was REALLY stubborn which isn't necessarily a good thing. Yes, I did avoid benzo related problems as a result, but I really wasn't all that smart to be honest.

Sometimes once in a blue moon and you have done research and you are extremely aware and careful , a benzo can really really help x @@TheAnxiousTruth
