He was only 19 when he wrote this. Brilliant.
So said everyone in Russia in 1926
Lol Jonas what up
Nah fr?
I believe he was 19 at the time of the premiere, but he really composed it when was 18. A genius.
It's so playful. Full of charm, and just the right amount of mischief. It's sad to think that a young composer so innocent and brilliant would nearly be taken away and killed because of one of his operas ten years later.

There is a special place in hell for whoever thought up and implemented ads in the middle of videos
@@victorrobin642 I have no problem with ads before the video. But ads put arbitrarily within, with no regard to the pacing or flow of the video or music, are horrendous.
@@victorrobin642 Westerner attitude? Huh? Why do you need to politicize everything?
@@victorrobin642 have you ever thought about seeking therapy? I make a comment about you politicizing everything, and out of nowhere you say "Long live communism", what does that have to do with anything? Besides if you are communist shouldn't you be against putting ads into artistic videos, as the financia exploitation of art is something inherently capitalistic?
Lastly, western culture may have stolen many things from other cultures, but that is something almost all cultures are guilty of. The Japanese industrial society is based off of European industrial culture, Turkish culture is based off of Persian culture, Persian culture is based off of Elamite and Assyrian culture, Assyrian culture is based off of Babylonian, Hittite and Mitanni culture, Babylonian culture is based off of Sumerian culture and the circle goes on forever. Cultural theft is something that occurs in all countries around the world.
@@victorrobin642 when did I ever justify cultural imperialism???
@@victorrobin642 Isn't communism where you get all the free stuff? Why do you, as a communist, defend adds?

in comparison to other composers, Shostakovich always sounds much more 'melodic' than 'harmonic' to me
Miguel Fontes Meira what about Prokofiev?
i think in a way, he is much more adventurous with melody than harmony
For me that's tchaikovsky
@@jiaxuli1013 I actually think Prokofiev is more 'harmonic', if that makes any sense. What I mean is that Shostakovich's music has a strong 'bachian' feeling to me, i.e. a somewhat autonomy of superimposed voices, and a 'dry' texture that is so characteristic.
Yes, but at the same time Shostakovich wrote very well thought out and rich harmony and always told his composition students to work hard on harmony
Despite how much of a masterpiece this is, it's extremely sad to see such a despairful contrast from his early works and his final gloomy viola sonata. Nevertheless, his misfortunes and perseverance through misery translated in his works, truly making him the greatest composer of all time.
Oof
yes
I appreciate your enthusiasm. I am too timid to make absolute statements. But his music is for me, also, among the greatest. That said, the gloominess of later works does not cause me sadness about his life situations. I feel the gloom he reflects in such pieces is as much a musical annotation of political history as it is of his own experiences.
@@Mr.CelloPaul True. I guess we all experience music in different ways.
ngl I think calling Shostakovich the greatest composer of all time is a little bit of a stretch... I adore his music just as much as the next person (have been privileged enough to conduct three of his works) but let's not get ahead of ourselves
0:09 is a good place to start.
12:45 me when I only 30 seconds to finish my maths test.
brilliant.
c minor string quartett motif (not dsch) always appears :D great
This was written 35 years before the 8th quartet.
its funny, like michael keller said above, this was written 35 years before 8th quartet. you are actually looking at it wrong, shostakovich quoted himself multiple times, like he quoted his first symphony, his piano trio in e minor, and his cello concerto
@@sneddypie I know, but the string quartett is one of the most known pieces from Shostakovich.
Kovács Mihály yes
@@kovacsmihaly it s actually the leningrad symphony 7 with lyric waltz and waltz 2. Plus, y all forgot about the 10th symphony with the tuba signature((( but nah, quartet 8 is not that known. Don t forget about piano concerto 2 which is iconic so...but dw, if you like the quartet so much, listen to it))
The first movement reminds me of the last Mephistopheles mvt of Liszt's Faust Symphony
Playing the piano part for this with my uni orchestra 🙃😟

交響曲1番からしっかりショスタコービッチサウンドですね。初期の頃は前衛的とも聞いていましたが。。。
音楽院の卒業作品ですから、、、交響曲2番、3番ともなると前衛としか言いようのない作品になります。
Great!
2:01 bassoon
That is indeed a bassoon
Is 8:31 a reference to Petrouchka by Stravinsky or am I tripping?
Maybe. During the writing of this symphony, Shostakovich was getting interested in some of Stravinsky's music, so it wouldn't be surprising if parts of the symphony sound that way.

nice kgb for fucking with the end of an excellent symphony
1. KGB started in 1954, this symphony is from 1926
2. Shostakovich didn't have any governmental issues until 1934
KGB didn't do nuthin man.
But something similar to what you said is what happened with the end of Prokofiev's 7th symphony. Stalin and them wanted to alter the ending to something much "happier" which is indeed fucking with the end of an excellent symphony.

2nd movement is great, otherwise this is pretty boring imo. Atmospheric, but lacks structure and destination. Just wanders around like wind. The overall feeling this conveys is somewhat unsettling and chaotic, which isn't my favourite type of music. Very impressive if he wrote this when he was 19 though.
Lol, and I think the second is the weak movement ;)
It's cosmic man break out of your egg.
"somewhat unsettling and chaotic" is a core characteristic of Shostakovich's music, imo
