The award-winning author of Americanah, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is also one of today's premier commentators on political and social issues. In addition to her bestselling We Should All Be Feminists, she has written on Michelle Obama for The New York Times' T Magazine and on post-election activism in The New Yorker. In October 2016, her Facebook post in response to a friend's inquiry about how to raise her daughter as a feminist went viral immediately. Now available in print, Dear Ijeawele is an incisive and witty list of fifteen ways to empower a young woman. Ranging from the choice of toys-why not a helicopter as well as a doll?-to makeup, clothes, and sexuality, Adichie's suggestions foster strength and independence by opening possibilities and shattering conventions.
Adichie is in conversation with Audie Cornish, co-host of NPR's award-winning evening news magazine All Things Considered. Previously, Cornish served as host of Weekend Edition Sunday. Audie has been covering elections and politics for public radio since 2004 as a reporter for WBUR in Boston. She continued on to NPR’s 2008 elections team and later Congressional Correspondent covering Capitol Hill. She now splits her time on All Things Considered with appearances on the NPR podcast Pop Culture Happy Hour, where she is a panelist considering all things books, movies and TV.

Before discovering Chimamanda Adichie, I did sometimes wonder whether I was imaging the stuff regarding gender inequality, but she articulates just how real they all were/are. And she does so in a way that's clear and undeniable. I LOVE THIS WOMAN'S MIND!!

Is something wrong with me? I am 57 years old, male, white and when I hear Miss Adichie talk, I agree practically to all she says. It is reasonable and without a doubt the right way to come along with each other. I only wished there were more people in this world who would listen.

This woman is strong. Look at the pressure? Must we all see things the same way? This is why Africa is always excluded. So many Western people cannot see that our experiences are not necessarily the same.

Funny thing that people say feminists are just angry, but there was so much laughter in this room

I honestly feel that the interviewer and the broader public REFUSE TO UNDERSTAND her. They simply don't want to accept her stance on many issues. Note Especially the opening statement where the interviewer claimed she apologized for her previous transgender remarks, which she did not.

Thank you Chima for the education about feminism. I think I understand clearly what you mean and I hope to live by some of it as an African male living in Africa.

Listening to you has really shaped my perception about women and you have indoctrinated me to believe that both men and women should be treated equal in all spheres of life. However, what about the issue of payment of bride price which is mostly performed by men in marriage because the bride price could be a factor as to why men carry their shoulders so high and see themselves as never to be equal to women especially in the context of Africa.
