As an officer I’m a little disappointed to hear you don’t carry a spare mag all the time. This is the most valuable piece of advice you’ll ever hear. Carry a spare mag every single day. It’s not as much more capacity but more for malfunctions. What are you going to do when the base plate falls out of your mag and rounds go everywhere? What about a jam? Failure to feed? Anything. It’s way easier and much faster to drop that mag and reload a fresh one. Please, carry a spare mag every single time you leave. On duty or not. I’m sure you carry spares on duty but carry at least one when off.

Glock mags don’t have loose baseplates like Clint from thunder ranch told on that 1911 story, if there’s a malfunction ( not likely with a Glock) it’s not likely the rounds are messed up in the mag. I don’t feel undergunned going out for a quick trash run without a second mag

@@spencermichaelson1882 any mag can have a lose baseplate and malfunction of any brand. If you go by that thinking, you’re being naïve. I have no idea who you’re talking about but anyway, a quick trip to the mail box year maybe that’s fine. If I’m leaving far enough where I have to drive to get there, a spare mag is coming with me. You do what you want. This is just from many years of top of the line training speaking and I feel way better carrying a backup.

R-LEO here and that's a lot of stuff for off-duty, but...
I would really like to sit down with you and have the opportunity to change your mind on extra mags? I see you take your LEO responsibilities very seriously, good for you! Never had much use for an LEO that didn't carry OD. Showed a lack of dedication and purpose. With that in mind and you being duty-bound to take action on serious and dangerous crimes that occur in your presence, those two extra mags may come in handy? Should you not need them, don't use them. However, if you do...
No matter what gun I carry, I always have two additional loads on me. Mags cause stoppages and you may need to switch it out? You could inadvertently drop the mag? While OD you may stop to help a Brother Officer who is gun fighting alone?
Anyway, thanks for what you do. It's younger LEOs like you we turn the profession over to and it is in good hands now.

Carrying all that stuff is a job in itself. I wish I could carry all that stuff. Could end up being necessary, but I'm not able to most of the time for a couple reasons. There are people that carry outrageous amounts of stuff too. It's pretty crazy that a person can carry so much without having to lug a backpack around. I just don't own the pants (or the patients) for it though. I just wear regular jeans and can't afford a lot of weight on my pants/belt, because they'll fall off my skinny ass.

Great video, Your EDC should adapt to your needs on the day. the baseline essentials as you have mentioned should be a constant and then scale up from there when needed. The only thing I would change is the optional spare mag. I think if there is something that is most likely to fail it's going to be the mag and that's why I make a point of always carrying at least one spare. Im not convinced on the aftermarket mags like the Shield Arms ones, they are really good but every mag malfunction I have seen with a G43X has been with one of those mags. having said that, some of those mags run really well, just a bit too inconsistent for my comfort level.

You should get yourself an edc Keychain. They are nice to have especially if you find yourself in a hand to hand situation. A force multiplier is a great way to get someone off of you. Most people think that a firearm is the end all be all. Well guns fail too...jamming, bullets not stopping the attacker, misfires and so on. If someone is able to disarm you and you don't have hand skills, then a force multiplier will do the trick. Just something to think about. I usually carry a spray, knife, edc Keychain and air marker. I’ve tried sooo many holsters for my Glock 17 and 19 and 43X I would recommend trying phlster holsters. They usually ship same day and they are absolutely the best to me for appendix carry. They are a little pricey but worth it. It’s comfortable with my 26, 19, 17, and will even comfortably carry the 34 or 17 with a comp if you want. I usually don’t recommend things, but I feel that strongly about their holsters.

I carry either a Glock 19 or Glock 23 off duty and with two spare magazines. Always. Then I also carry OC spray, cell phone, small knife and police ID. That’s it. For off duty, I’m not carrying stupid cuffs, a tourniquet, a multi tool, a flashlight, or any other “crap” and nonsense. I’m coming up to year 34 active LE and the siht I’ve seen people carry off duty is just nutz. Talk about a tactical trunk monkey! They might as well don their web gear/Sam brown on them too. I put the blinders on when I’m off duty and unless someone is about to get executed, I’m not taking any action whatsoever. A 911 call is about it. Having handcuffs is just going to push one to needlessly get involved with some bullsiht

You should look into emerson knives. The wave feature along with general construction in ergos and grip makes me feel they're perfect for an officer. They're also only chisel sharpened so you just have to worry about sharpening one side, great for field maintenance. Also perhaps a streamlight wedge as it's way more comfortable that a cylindrical light, unless you want it for self defense. Also no gshock? 😢

You did not mention "on call" status, which will dictate more duty like gear.
One suggestion: For any non-uniform, including off-duty, always have your badge and cuffs. Also get a badge/ID wallet. Lastly have your radio handy, in your vehicle.

In my opinion I would because I know it would never even be seen unless my life depended on it. The reason I would is because this world is crazy and that person that gets violent may have a gun and try to use it. Or in the case of the shooting in Orlando, if someone had concealed they MAY have been able to stop the threat.

Now pause here...(A) the shots you heard were not the first shots, "the gunman" with helmet & AR you're aiming at is actually a responding deputy. (B) you shoot, but Jessica jumped up off the floor screaming in panic.. right into your front sight.
