  • When something goes wrong in the wilderness, search and rescue is there to help. #searchandrescue #firstresponders #helicopter #firstaid
This 60-minute documentary film takes us behind-the-scenes of Utah’s volunteer Search & Rescue teams, and shows how their on-the-job experiences with life and death have further shaped their lives.
A KUED (now PBS Utah) original production, Search & Rescue offers a behind-the-scenes look at Utah’s first-responder Search and Rescue volunteers. See how life and death experiences have shaped the lives of these brave men and women.
When Brenda Beene was 15, she and two cousins decided to hike up a waterfall to watch the sunset. While scaling the slippery precipice, one of her cousins lost his footing, and fell off the rock face. “The fear was indescribable,” says Beene. “It was paralyzing. I sat there, next to his lifeless body, for what seemed like forever. The sun started to go down, and then I saw two faces come up over the ledge. It was Search and Rescue. I was so grateful.”
Search & Rescue follows search and rescue volunteers who confront life and death experiences that have shaped their lives
Becoming a SAR member is a rigorous process. After being selected from a pool of applicants, interviewees must provide their own gear, means of travel, and take a yearlong course to learn the skills required to be a part of the team, followed by a strenuous final test.
"That feeling that you get when you help that person, when you bring a person down off a mountain and the family is standing there, waiting. You feel like you made a difference today. "

Helping others adds incredible value to your life and Utah maintains a super healthy relationship volunteerism. Make this type of work a little safer for everyone by doing the following:
    1. Let folks know exactly where you are going AND who to contact if you don't show up. (Local County Sheriff?)
    2. Bring EXTRA food, water, a headlamp, lighter, mylar blankets.......
    3. Stay together whenever possible.
    4. Be able to "signal" air support in remote areas. Wear bright colors, bring a mirror, make a fire/smoke (if safe).
    * Remember, you may encounter someone needing assistance. If you are delayed helping someone, you will have the essentials, plus some for them.

We moved here a few years ago, and Utah is the most beautiful yet deadly place to play. Desolate desert, high altitude mountains, cold, fast water. It's absolutely serious and demands discipline. Thank you All first responders and PBS Utah for this info.✌️🇺🇲

You NEVER hike alone. NEVER ski alone in the back country.
