  • First shoe of the day on a bright but frosty morning. This is Ruby. Here I'm cold shoeing where no heat is involved. Please see my other videos for hot shoeing.
Filmed with my GoPro mouth mount, hence the heavy breathing!
Here is a link to the how I made it video. • GoPro Mouth Mount

PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
1: I'm breathing heavy because I'm using a mouth mount which put the camera just in front of my nose.
2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
3: I fed the dog a piece of the hoof called the frog which is soft and when trimmed is a treat!
4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
5: Wild horses are extinct. Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging.
    6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering

Domestic horses need shoes for many purposes. Their hooves aren’t as strong as the mustangs that have been in the wild all their lives. Mustangs travel miles every day on rock and other hard surfaces that grinds them down. That doesn’t mean their hooves are nice and perfect like domestic horses though. Theirs are still chipped and broken. We shoe and trim our horses hooves to help them walk on pavement, gravel, and other hard surfaces. Also, it just helps the horse overall in general riding and working. He gave the dog part of the frog. It’s a soft tissue like part of he hooves that they can feel. But he gave them a bit of the dead, old built up tissue that needed to come off. All dogs love it. I know mine do.

The part of the horse's hoof he "feeds" to the dog is an overgrown part of the frog and if he had left it there after the shoeing the dogs would have eaten it anyways. Not bad for them, god knows why they like it. All the dogs I've seen that are regulars at horse barns LOVE to eat the hoof clippings.

+Daniel Engle What he means is that manual labor is not the only way to work hard, using your brain to work hard doesn't really require a ton of manual labor and generally speaking office jobs require just that. Now, that is not to say that shoeing a horse is mindless or trivial, but accounting and engineering is difficult too.

for those who are convulsing over what he fed the dog:
the piece he gave the dog is called the "frog". What he cut off has no nerve endings. Dogs will eat hoof and frog trimmings and they are no different than a bone or a treat. It harms neither horse nor dog.
Dogs will eat horse poop, too, which was likely coating the frog trimming. Even though it's gross, small amounts won't hurt them either.
This has been a horsey PSA. You're welcome.

In my early 20s I worked at a boarding and training stable for 5-ish years after owning horses through my entire childhood. Most of the horses there were "barefoot" (no iron shoes) and did just fine, and we took them trail riding in the rocky desert of southern Arizona. Arabians in particular seem to have nice, wide, strong hooves. However, I did encounter a few horses who needed shoes. They had white hooves or just were too tender-footed. In those cases we usually kept front shoes only on them. I was fascinated by everything our farrier was able to do for our horses. My last horse, who has since passed away, never wore shoes her entire life, and she had gorgeous strong hooves. I was very proud of that. Not sure why I'm sharing all this- maybe I just wanted to give my two cents on horses and shoeing. Oh, and the ranch dogs ALWAYS loved gnawing on hoof trimmings. It was adorable. (EDITED to change "feet" to "hooves" so people don't get all upset. lol)

    To answer some questions
    1) NO it doesn't hurt the horses there is no tissue being cut or punctured. It's just like clipping your nails
    2) Most horses are shoed so they don't get sore when walking on gravel and hard surfaces. Some horses also get corrective shoes the help them correct any thing wrong with their legs.
    4) It is perfectly safe to feed your dog a horse hoof clippings, frog, chestnut, etc.
    5) Most horses that live in the wild naturally wear their hooves down, but because your horse isn't wild means that yes, even if they don't have shoes they need to be trimmed (not applying to some special cases of some horse with spectacular wearing hooves, that only need it every so often)
    6) I would talk to your farrier but a good schedule for your horses shoes is about every 4-5 weeks
Hopes this helps anyone with questions lol

Jeez people, what ya need to do is watch a few more of these videos and get an education. No I don't shoe my horses unless they need it but horses wear down their feet if they're worked often. Shoes help keep that from happening. No it's not torture, if it were torture believe me the animal would say something about it. They aren't little frail creatures, they're big ass animals that have minds of their own.

No, putting nails into the horses white line doesn't hurt them. Their hooves go really deep, that nail is not puncturing the skin or bones, and it 100% does not hurt them. Trust me, if it hurt the horse, they would let the ferrier know! :)
