@@DimT670 Sure, for a short time. There needs to be supply and demand for anything to function. A lot of LGS's are hurting heavy because of all the saturation. The one I normally go to? Is only buying some of these "high end" cards at 20% because they just can't see the fucking things. Their collectors packs are just sitting their on the shelf for weeks, and months in the case of eldraine. That causes them to jack up prices for everything else. If you can't sell what's "hot" right now, your store is gonna be in pain.

Legit, Non-foil normal Ashiok Nightmare Muse is worth more than or the same as the extended art Ashiok, depending on which day you go look.
Cards being more affordable is great- the problem is the price of these packs/boxes, and the multitude of deliberately bad cards in them to push the gambling bug.
@@LordXypherious The Eldraine collection boosters are still holding value, and I think it has a lot to do with the Storybook art being of a wider variety of specific, and arguably good cards. The Theros Constellation cards crap out 2 foil Daxos every other opening and nobody wants more of that.
Those cards only have that value because of the sale price of collector's boosters, and players' willingness to overpay to acquire something "cool" or "powerful." I am not interested on the monetary "value" of cards- I am interested in their affordability/accessibility and usefulness in games.
@@LordXypherious That's kinda exactly what I just said. The storybook art cards are better than the Constellation cards. Do YOU want 2 Callaphe in a pack? The Theros block is full of duds outside of Uro, Dryad, Shadowspear, and Lotus.
So I got one of these for my birthday from by girlfriend who knew I am into magic. Was both happy and disappointed she got me it. Loved that she got me this but disappointed she spent so much
$10 for a foil full art planeswalker...imagine how crazy it would be to pull that in any other sets regular packs compared to this
Prices have fallen through the floor on this set.
I pulled an alt art Erebos last friday, which is being played heavily in pioneer, commander, and standard. He was 6 dollars.
I think that's a lot of the issue with these packs. When you look at the experience with opening Masterpieces, you're not expecting them and then BOOM a high value, unique card, awesome right? With these you pay out the ass and even IF you open the super amazing foil alternate art cards you don't even break even on price. The experience does not leave the player with any lasting excitement and/or joy, it's just sour regret.
@@54m0h7 totally agree, as I said I have opened 8 gift fat packs, I've had better pulls form those than I have seen in this video. ie i've open 8 gift fat packs, and 1 normal (I wanted a normal large Spin die, so that the only reason for buying it. as below but a few of the treasure unveiled. 4 Royal Scion (1 foil) 2 full art foil Garruks, 1 foil the great Henge, 2 x Brazen Borrower, 2 Questing beasts, ie some pulls from just 9 fat pack yes I have been lucky, I hope the same applies for the 2 booster boxes I am going to buy at the end of the month.
It's great. I went to my lgs to pick up the TBD gods and they were selling the showcase versions for the exact same price so I picked them up instead. Thanks crashing collector booster prices.
The price of one box is nearly the same as the monthly minimum wage in my country (Brazil)

I am not up to date on standard or current cards what so ever.... but this set looks absolutely trash to me. I would be upset if i paid 4 dollars a pack and got that. I did like the red dragon with double strike... but i don't really play with creatures in my decks so i would probably put it in my binder.

I primarily buy boosters to draft with friends. The cards I get out of it, I then use for my *many* commander decks. I will be getting Mystery Boosters for the same reason. Draft, then commander.
Thinking of getting myself a couple of boxes for that reason hoping to pull one f the big hitters to but moar boxes XD
The Professor always makes the point that booster packs are made for draft. These videos are to show that you shouldn't buy a booster box, or packs, to get the cards you want, or to make money off of. Buying them for drafting is fine (but at 20 dollars a pack, ouch), but buying them to get the cards you need is stupid.
Collector's boosters aren't meant for draft, though...

That's not really true. You can get the alt-art and borderless cards, both foil and non-foil, from the regular draft packs. The only thing you can't get are the extended art cards.
Indeed, pulled a Wrath in Amonkhet draft, quietly. The look on peoples faces when wiping the board! priceless
Excuse me are you in touch with reality? All of these are available in normal packs. I pulled alternate art heliod and klothys in my prerelease. Only the extended art isn't available
Shadow Gamer Sorry to interject and this could potentially be a print error but I have seen a few full arts (not showcase gods/demigods) in normal boosters so regardless your point is strengthened

To be honest I'm happy they're available in non-foil somewhere in case you want to put them in a low-powered Cube or something. But I don't wish opening one of these in a $20 booster on anyone.
I actually needed both planeswalker deck Gideons for my Gideon EDH deck, they were way too expensive for what they are. If they had been in some kind of booster they'd be a lot more affordable. Of course I don't think anyone is excited to open these and I guess this brings us back to "just put all the cards in the boosters, please"
Hey Prof, Thanks for taking the hit for us again. My Lgs owner was raving about these to me a two weeks ago telling me that there were twice as many mythics per box than Eldraine. Glad I didnt buy after seeing the planeswalker deck mythics in here. Also Boo to WotC for not putting full art lands in the Bundle, or the toolkit for that matter.
So that people couldn't buy the bundles/toolkits unless they pay way over MSRP, wizards learned their lesson from putting in demand full art lands in those.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. My condolences.
One thing I always wanted back was the foil packs that they made back in alara. I thought they were super cool as a foil chaser. They were really fun and exciting to open even if I didn't get my money back even though they didn't have a "special art" version of cards in packs. If I remember right, they were $7 a piece retail. Collector's boosters aren't those. Maybe at that $7 they would be cool. These just show wizards greed.
I think in the future (similar to masterpieces, masters and secret lair) wizards will tighten up on the mystery boosters. They will follow the trend of being very popular because they actually have value and are unique and fun. It's a product for nearly everyone. They will create some product line around the mystery boosters, under a new name just enough to have an excuse to change the older version as to have an excuse to remove a lot of that value but give people the illusion that's it's still that thing that people loved.
I don't like being cynical, but wizards has shown us this trend over and over again. They care increasingly about the corporate profits as time goes on to the extent that is going to hurt long term sustainability.
I really like how you indicated how many packs are left. I'd love it if you did that for regular booster box games.
You'd think Wizards would take a lesson from the best parallel to this - the comic book industry in the 80's and 90's.
Pandering to collectors and speculators wasn't a viable long-term strategy. I'm waiting for the market bust that inevitably followed the 90's boom to happen to MTG.
We may already be seeing that bust happening right now.
Profits and sales figures says that bust is not happening. Also they have always pandered to collectors.
You do realise that even if the box sells for like 100 they still gain money right? And if more of them sell at 100, compared to how many would have sold at 300, even more money than before
Marvel went bankrupt at the end of all that.
The problem with Comics were that lots of new, uninformed "investors" flooded the market. They pushed sales and gimmicks way, way up and then one day they realized everything they had bought was worthless. So they stopped buying product and it tanked the industry.
Magic does not gave that huge influx of uninformed "investors" flooding into the market, so I do not think a crash of any kind is coming.
My bet is that Ikoria will have Collector Boosters but it will be the last set with them.
I generally wait until the end of the video to comment and often won't comment on videos with 600+ comments already...but....

Excellent video professor. What I do is mainly collect 1 color (black), Artifacts, & lands. Miss those old days when we didn't have to worry about getting foils.
I am so glad I decided to collect Throne over this pile of horse Dodo. I've bought very little in the way of boxes, I've not even opened a booster box yet, only fat packs (gift ones) But I now have a full set of basic cards, almost a full set of Foils and 4 x 4 ring binders with a full range of all cards in the set pockets numbered to 336, yes I don't have everything, but I do have 4 royal Scion, 2 full Art Foil Garruks, and all I have bought is a few singles (maybe to the value of a booster box!) and a I had to buy a OKO, and a Embercleave. I am going to open one more Fat pack, making (8) and 2 booster for the hell of it. what ever I get is gravy on a already fantastic set of cards. I LOVE THRONE.

Prof, you should be all for this product. The prices of these singles of the cards in the collectors boosters would be so much higher if this product didn’t exist. As someone who wants to collect this set somewhat in foil, I’m so happy I can buy foils and still afford to buy food.

I definitely was on the luckier side of things when I bought (and slightly overpaid) a single pack from my LGS, and only really did it to say 'I bought one, and maybe something will inspire me'. While my pulls definitely did, I only ended up with about 4 or 5 cards in total that I was excited to get and work with at some point. Seeing the other side of that luck of where almost nothing in the pack could be inspiring is really jawdropping at how little there really is to offer in these when you could pay 5 to 6 times the price of a regular booster.

you know I personally have fun opening booster packs, the mystery and allure of what you get inside and appreciating the art of each card and the flavor text the stories that they tell. one of my friends got a full art foil version of Uro from these packs so really to each their own, i'm a big fan of the giants and titans of this set really like their art, so that's why I've bought several of these packs.
What i love about Theros beyond and the whole collector booster thing in general is the fact that foils are literally dirt cheap, extended arts are dirt cheap as well, and i even picked up a sweet extended art foil calix planeswalker for not very much at all. The latest two sets have been literal heaven for people buying singles, collecting neat foils and showcase cards, especially on a budget.

Pretty much met expectations😬 My LGS had these for $300 apiece, and when no one bought any at that price, they dropped them to $250. Shortly after I picked up my box they just cracked the rest and listed the singles for sale. I hope they recouped their costs at least!
Here in europe you can buy them for 170 a box that's just above distributors cost price. And even then you might lose money on them.
I gotta say I have really been enjoying enjoying you channel, I found it and subscribed literally yesterday day. Because even though I play Yu-Gi-Oh and not MTG I was looking for what type of sleeves and deck boxes are the best and used this channel. You broke down what I should buy and why excellently (that being dragon shields and ultra pro satin towers)

I have to admit I like them. I previously have bought bundles, but didn't like the stacks of unneeded cards afterwards. So if I want to get something from the sets I now like these for the different art-versions. And the newer set had them for 15€ which is fine for me personally.
I was very lucky the last time opening the extended art foil oko which was worth more than the two boosters I opened. It is really like getting two or three shiny lottery tickets. As an EDH-only player looking for pretty shiny art - I like it!
Okay, so I'm going to say it. Prof, I freaking LOVE that suit jacket.
i have to say i had maybe one of the best TBD collector box openings a couple months ago and i got a ton of Borderless cards worth up in the $40 to $50 range, i was very impressed. Of course i didn't sell those cards to get another one, i put them in my binders and one of them into one of my EDh decks. that card happened to be a Foiled Borderless Shadowspear artifact card.
I really like the Prof's hair as it is now in comparison to the longer hair he used to have.
That was brutal! I haven't even considered buying these Collector's boxes from either Throne of Eldraine or Theros, and I buy most of everything Wizards produces. Most of the cards in these Collector's booster packs are foil versions of draft chaff commons and uncommons that'll never have any resale value. And the rares and mythics can be duds as well. I agree, it doesn't feel good at all!

Great video Prof. I absolutely LOATHE this product. While I do buy Booster Boxes for sets that I'm into and wanting to enjoy opening packs (I love collecting, not just playing), I also buy singles when I want to build Decks or beef up my collection. This product is so unappealing and def seems beyond predatory & deceiving.
please look at Thassas Oracle. The "fullart" version has only a part of the normal artwork on it. Only by a bit but visible.

i know that many people dont like the collectors booster packs but i actually really love them... i love the experience of opening boosters and as a average earning adult i wont complain about 200 bucks every 3 months for what i find a really rewarding experience especially if you draft...
I love the way the special cards look, but the prices, even after dropping, are nuts...
I bought 1 because my LGS offered 3 draft boxes, and a collector's box for $400 if you prepaid. So that felt like a deal worth taking.

That foil bland basic feels like finding a rat in your cereal.
Yes wotc, I’ll totally pay around the same amount of curling foil standard cards instead of something like modern horizons (which should’ve been 100$ too but keep justifying their price somehow)
It's easy to tell you were upset you were at the start of the video, just wanted to say I'm really thankful for content like this as it really demonstrates to people that no, they're not getting their money's worth from collector boosters. We really need to hold WotC accountable for the quality of their products, knowing their player base better and treating them better.
I picked up one of the boxes at $200. I'm a sucker for blinging deck my decks out. Seeing these prices I doubt I hit my money, but I was surprised how bad this box was. I got at minimum two of each planeswalker, and at least one was the unique art for each. The boxes I've seen on the taco channel usually have at least a few gods if no planeswalkers. That being said, buy the singles for the bling unless the hunt is more fun than the prize.

when I realized it was a collectors booster box game, I basically rote it off as 0% of making back anything near what was spent... and on the point Prof. made on why WotC is making it again for Theros is probably because they so it be successful with Eldraine... but Eldraine has Oko and other cards that are playable in other competitive formats other than standard (to my knowledge) or at least made waves fairly quickly.
I'm just thankful for that jacket. It's the real MVP here.

It's worth mentioning that some "Extended Art" cards also actually show LESS art. Go to Scryfall and look at Idyllic Tutor, for example. They also remove the flavor text, which kinda sucks :[
so what i think is sooo great is that if im not mistaken that most of the value was from the lands, THE LANDS!!!!! REGULAR LANDS!!!!!!!
those constellation slots have plummeted Gods.
i bought mine with left over christmas credit at tcg player, i just wanted the ashiok and thought this would be a fun experience, and it was. I got the ashiok i wanted and enough of the lands to bling out my Vial smasher and kydele deck. It was worth for me but then again i hit slightly better and would never buy another one so yeah, take what you will.

This video ending was very much needed
The only redeeming quality of Theros Beyond Death is that Ashiok learns about the Phyrexians and goes out to find them, so there's likely going to be a set with a lot of them coming soon. Hopefully the old school Phyrexians from Yawgie's army at some of the planes they visited and colonized during the times when Yawgmoth and Friends went on for inter-planar artifact search expeditions, and not the lackluster phyresis-infected new type of Phyrexians from Mirrodin.
