  • How to freeze protect your pool on short notice. Set pumps to run 24/7, drape pool equipment with large bed sheets and set up incandescent lights (old school lightbulb lights) under draping. If you have a heater, just heat the water. If there is ice forming on the top of your pool, don’t panic but also avoid breaking the ice as it can damage vinyl liner pools.

    Keeping the pump running is basically “common sense”, but that’s the easy fix. When the deep freeze hit Texas (2020), we did not have electric power for several days. So it was not possible to keep the pump running for many people. Without having a generator, what ideas do you have to prevent freezing?
    I’d like to see a video on that.

      That is why I am here as well. We were lucky to have power most of the time because we are on a grid with a fire station but we know lots of people who had to spend thousands of dollars to get their pool fixed. I would like to know if I can use a sump pump with a generator to keep the water moving?

    Running the pool pump is a great idea until the power goes out. Are there any tips - other than covering the pool equipment - to keeping stuff from freezing and breaking? Temps in TX are going to be in single digits at night.

      Get some food grade antifreeze circulating before the power does go out. Take some empty water bottles, turn them upside down (so most of the air stays in) and wedge them upside down in the two holes in the skimmer. This will give room for any potential expansion in the pipes. drain the pump, & filter by removing the drain plugs and open all valves. The pump has 2 and the filter has one. If you have a cartridge or DE filter, open it up and remove the grids or cartridges and store in the garage. Good luck out there!

      @@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS my pool level is already low, but the pump is running, there is a layer of ice forming on the surface of the pool. Can you share some steps on how to drain the pipes, pump & filter please. Really appreciate you help. In Dallas TX - it is about 16 F here. Do I keep the pump on , or should I prepare for the power outages which are expected?

    Pool pump has held up so far and hoping we don’t a power blackout today. The pool is pretty punch frozen over except for a couple small areas on the edge where the floor valves keep the water flowing. Have been breaking up the ice around the edges to avoid the whole pool freezing over. Have had two tarps over the pool pump/equipment. Also put in a few milk jugs on the edges as well to use as shock absorber.
    Gosh, what else can i do?

    • @SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
      @SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS  Před 3 lety

      Keep doing what you’re doing. If your blackout only lasts a few hours, you should be able to fire things right back up. Just make sure that what ever you’re covering the equipment with is allowing your pump sufficient air space to breathe and circulate air....doesn’t take much, maybe 6” or so.

    Any recommendations if the surface and pipes are already frozen? Our power was out and by the time it came back everything already started to freeze. I tried turning the pump on but it won't prime.

      Hi I've been on CZcams searching for an hour on electric freeze guards information and finally landed on your video with trouble shooting.
      My guard is staying on way passed when it is supposed to be off. Godsakes, No wonder my Edison bill came in the in 700s.
