- How to adjust the brakes on your road bike on the road when cycling: If the brakes are to sensitive or not sensitive enough when applied out on the road, then it's time for an easy fix. Adjustment to fix bike brakes requires turning the brake barrel adjuster properly. We'll also show how to center brakes if one brake pad is rubbing. Only occasionally will you be required to tighten or loosen the cable if the barrel adjuster is at it's limit. Be sure to check that the brakes are correctly adjusted each time you do cycle service or repair.
Very clear video, and I love the cat cameos!
Thank you. Her name is Hermione after the heroine of Harry Potter fame because of the red on her head and tail. Also visit our CZcams home site at:

thank you very much for this video! My back break was really loose that it didn't really function, did what you said and have saved myself around £15-20!!
Good tip with using the bolt for the whole brake housing to fix alignment...much easier than the purpose-built alignment bolt in practice! Cheers
Didn't even think of looking at the back of the assembly! Thx... I'm a noob so hope i can make this work
Thanks for this, good demonstration of how to adjust the cable
Thanks Tony, that is a nice explanation of road brake adjustment. It certainly helped me. I enjoy your videos.

What about the cable being to loose across the top bar? I pulled it as tightly as I could, but I have to much slack on it , so there's more play before the pads grip the rim.
i have the same problem. cant find any videos on it though
Hi I think I have a solution for you guy's problem. there the cable ends. it goes through a piece of metal which is tightened with an allen key. you want to loosen it pull the cbale thorugh and then tigthen it. hope i helped.
Hi Tony Marchand, i have buy a new brake shoes for my bike brake, but still not stop, what have to do ? plz help
Can you help me, my caliper is moving until the brake pads contact to the rim while the other side is far from the rim even tho i tightened up the bolt on frame, what do you think is the cause?
Make sure the wheel is properly inserted into the stays or the front or back of the frame. Jim Langley has a good article on centering rim brakes:
www.roadbikerider.com/off-center-rim-brakes-sidepull-brakes/
If you look at the picture at the beginning of the article, the rim brake has a small hex screw (sometimes it's a regular Phillips head screw) that controls the spring tension and allows one to center the rim brake. So if you can't center the brakes with the bolt through the frame (as per the article), try using the small screw or hex on the rim brake itself. If there is not bolt or screw on the rim brake and you still can't get the brakes centered, try removing the bolt and nut that goes through the frame, clean, use some blue Loctite (low to medium thread highlighter) and re-assemble. Finally, the brake itself may be damaged and you may want your shop to replace it. If you're installing a new rim brake, you may not be using the correct hardware (bolt and nut that goes through the frame). Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony
help! my brakes wont spring fully back. how can i solve this problem?
How do you adjust the tension on the spring that returns the brake to open position after application ?
Some brakes have a small screw on the side to adjust brake tension but many don't. Three possible problems may exist:
1. Spring may be broken
2. Brake cable and housing may be rusted
3. Brake/Shifter on the handlebar may need repair
Unfasten the brake cable be loosening the bolt that holds the cable on the brake then try the following:
Try pushing the brake pads closed with your hands and releasing. If the brake does not open, there's a problem with the spring. The brake may need repair or have to be replaced.
If the brake closes and opens properly, the problem would appear to be in the brake cable and housing which would need to be replaced (much cheaper and easier if this is the case).
Also check that the brake/shifter handle on the handlebar opens and closes fully. If it does not, there's a problem in the in the brake/shifter which will need to be examined by your local bike mechanic.
Thank you for posting this!! Most of the vids on youtube are incorrect and poor quality.
