I've got no issue with alternatives (particularly if they have bonus elements such as stealth or as a liquid carrier) and I most certainly agree that littering the lake bed with leads dropped unnecessarily or even frivolously is a bad look but I do have issues with companies using general scientific ignorance as a sales pitch. The facts are that lead is an extremely toxic substance if it gets within the body of any living creature BUT it is also an extremely inert substance, it takes an awful lot of effort to turn a fishing lead into a form where it can cause any harm to its surrounding environment. To break lead down into solution you need an excess of oxygen (water is, at best, about 1% oxygen compared to 21% in air) to oxidise the lead (the dull coating that forms over the shiny metal after cutting) and then you need a relatively strong acid to break that down, relatively strong in this context would be far outside the survivable conditions for the majority of life. The other thing you can do to speed up the dissolving of lead is to increase the surface area upon which the oxidisation process can take place by reducing the lumps into pellets or dust, a fishing lead is a big lump with relatively low surface area compared to its mass so there is not much oxidised lead exposed to organic acids, add to this the impermeable plastic coating further reducing exposure and you have something that is very challenging to break down. There have been no studies that show that fishing leads increase the amount of dissolved lead in a body of water or its surrounding environment, the only studies that show increased quantities of dissolved lead are found on major rivers and the increase is always attributed to industrial actions such as mining and production where insufficient safeguards have been implemented to contain runoff or filter output.
Blaming anglers for increases in dissolved lead in water is like blaming global warming on your gran for leaving the hallway light on when she goes to the shops when the real culprits are industry, power generation and transit. If it makes you feel better to use alternatives then more power to you but I'd really prefer not to be called out by companies for polluting or bad practice when they are simply misappropriating evidence to support their claims. I stand by any cause that aims to make a better world for tomorrow but the effort must be put into tackling problems at the source rather than at the consumer level.

Yeh i mean I'm definitely not an expert on lead by any means 😂 I guess part of it is the production effect on the environment before even dropping them but I mean basically everything is bad to produce and I'm not sure on the production effect of the alternatives so that's kinda a null argument. It was just something I was interested in exploring! Great reply 👍 for me as I said in the video I'm not sold on needing to stop using leads I still do and regularly fish weedy waters and drop them. These to me appeal for the liquid aspect for winter fishing mostly. I just wanted to get an opinion of other anglers on there thoughts 👍

So first issue is size, as they won't work for distance or bags. At which point they are limited to short to medium range or from a boat.
Ultimately, it will come down to cost. Anglers will buy 'leads' on price so any alternative will need to be cheaper.
Osprey brought out glass leads, which never took off. Pallatrax stones have been around a long time but anglers maintain a preference for lead.
I don't see that changing until price dictates it.

There's also availability, I can walk into 3 different tackle shops locally and buy leads. Alternative products are only available online.

There are alternative shapes coming I believe I have seen distance versions on there Instagram. I think the gripper shape is very popular in Europe so maybe why they came out first🤷 I think your right at the end of the day most products are at a price and if I can get something that's a similar size/shape that has do detriment to my angling and is cheaper than I'm all in 🤣 maybe one day.....

Many of the main tackle manufacturers are making "leads" from alternative non-toxic metals. And have been doing so for quite sometime.
Although lead is toxic, the lead used to manufacture fishing weights is inert anyway.

I have said the same I think the lime in the concrete ain't to good for a pond ether

      @CymruCelt01 Před 7 měsíci

@@aarondavies8486 yeah, when the lime dissolves in water, it'll create calcium hydroxide - which is toxic.
Obviously, I don't know if these concrete weights contain lime, or not. But if the material really is made from concrete, then those weights will probably contain lime.

Gripper leads always look unsightly I believe there very popular on the continent hense there realise first. I believe other shapes are to follow. For me I'm not a fan of the stones when I have seen them in the past but maybe there better now?

@@acereflectionsfishing same with the stones though I think? there very big for the weight I believe. I think if your prime concern is size it's got to be lead. It doesn't seam there's much around that can compete with Lead for it's density. Il Have to check the stones out again at some point. 👍

There 100% eco, tested and compliant and none toxic in all forms not actually just b&q concrete 🤣 Im not saying ban leads I use them in 90% if my fishing and I know the lead is inert but the production of fishing leads is still not great for the environment and with today's crazy eco climate (make if it what you will...🤣) it's good to have some back up solutions incase things go a bit mad and we are forced to make a change in the industry.

I think these and similar solutions are a great idea. We’ve got used to dropping leads but when you look at it from any other angle (no pun intended) it doesn’t make sense; it’s just littering out of view. If a group of teenagers visited your favourite lake and dropped 20 little laughing gas cylinders in every two weeks, you’d have an issue with it, right? So if they were covered in camo plastic would we feel any better about it? I doubt it.
We’ve got much better uses for lead and related alloys, why chuck it in a lake?
      Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

@yesnikneb in the 27 years of carp fishing I have never dropped a lead ots just a gimmick that's all to sell more leads just like the tackle companies show they use 15lb mainline with a 30lb hooklink is a gimmick to sell more end tackle and stupid people fall for it all the time thinking they do it so I must do the same I fish 20lb mainline 15lb hooklink so if I do get snagged up or anything all I ever lose is a hook not the hole lots my weakest point is my hooklink not my mainline

@DiaryOfAnAverageCarpAngler how is 100% safe all cement contains lime pml and lime is one of the worst things for water it changers pH levels in the water it isn't safe at all so you obviously fell for the marking tactics and have no clue about what's really in it do you like I said all cements contain lime people really are sheep and can't think for their selves just believe anything they get told now days without even doing a bit of their own working out to see if its true or not
