I think it's a shame that 4Kids never got to localise the Marineford episodes. I wanted to see Whitebeard wielding a giant lollipop in battle and getting stabbed in the back by Squardo with a toilet plunger.

This arc was so rough that even the original Toei animation made some censors from the manga. Whitebeard had half his head blown off in the source material
Original: Kuina broke her neck and died...
4Kids: Bested someone in a duel. He was embarrassed to loose to a girl. Returned with friends. Implied that they beat the ever-loving hell out of her and she was hospitalized. Too severely injured to ever fight again. Possible permanent coma from physical injury since we never see her after this.

Was there ever a moment, where one of the editors at 4kids looked up from his work with the realization that maybe they were wasting money by doing this?
Yeah, that's the real crazy thing. Honestly, with all the editing, it would have been way more effective to try to get another more mature show and air it in some form of special "Teen Block" after the normal programming. Like maybe air this alongside Naruto or something, right?
I imagine it was about the point when they pulled out of the dub for financial reasons.
i dont think the editors had any decision power in this whole thing tbh...they were just doing the job hat paid them enough to pay rent and buy food, its the higher ups that made all the decisions on this that i dont understand. like....why. just, why.

I think they were legally obligated to dub the series after they made some package deal to dub some anime. They dropped it as soon as they were legally able to.
It's hilarious how with some of these "censors", they actually make the scenes worse. Kuina's death and Gin's death are perfect examples of this.
Gin didn't die. He's the one who used the boat to bring all of Krieg's men away from Baratie.

@@DearDeerRyone Yes, I believe 4kids will have a bad time figuring out how to censor future arcs like Marineford Arc or Dressrosa Arc (if they manage to censor Skypeia Arc and Water 7 Arc.)

Edit 110 sounds surprisingly more violent than falling down the steps and hitting your head and dying.
Yeah, it's super weird! In a weird way, it's almost better than the original since the entire thing of her story was that she was afraid her gender would make her too weak, so it actually makes sense for that to come into play in a different way, with her being beaten because she was 'too strong' for being a girl.
If they didn't cut out her death, it would weirdly be an honest improvement over her just falling down the stairs and dying a really lame death that relates to nothing in the plot at all.

I always find it funny how 4kids often creates fates worse than death in their quest to avoid death. Like the shadow realm in yugioh. No, we can’t have them die. Let’s instead have them be sent to a dark everlasting nightmare dimension where they’ll spend the rest of time alone and afraid.

To be fair I didn't even realize that the 4 kidz dub went past this arc until a few weeks ago I thought it was canceled before the arlong park arc

4Kids was actually capable of getting dark when they didn't think it would interfere with the bottom line, just look at their version of TMNT that was a lot closer to the dark and violent original comic than the previous cartoon was.

Let's take a moment to appreciate 4Kids' work! Without all the effort they put into one piece we wouldn't get such good laughs. XD
The best thing about sanji's lollipop is that they dont change the way he holds the lollipop, so he just goes around with an endless supply of red lollipops, that he holds as if he were smoking them. It's a bizarre idea, even within the realm of one piece.
Can't wait for the Arlong arc. They ruined both one of the best villains of the series, and the origins of one the best protagonists.

honestly cant really bring myself to like nami that much, like her backstory is good and all but I think as a character she isent really that likeable outside of a few moment. Then again im still really relatively new to the series (just finished Thriller Bark) so maybe that changes
@@baileyburns1589 Nah, that's a valid opinion, and a lot of people do think that. I like Nami, but I can see why she doesn't appeal to everyone. A large part of the appeal for me is how much stronger those good moments are because of the rest of her general behavior.

There's an interesting non-edit you missed.
When Krieg recounts the namesake for Zeff's moniker "Red Leg Zeff" (changed in the dub to "Red Shoes Zeff"), the story he tells isn't altered at all. While blood isn't referenced by name, the blood on Zeff's leg is still completely unaltered, and Krieg still mentions that the origin of Zeff's nickname (using only his legs to fight and his enemies dyeing his feet red) is "gruesome".

It was changed in the Japanese anime as well, it’s stated in anime that zeffs leg was stuck under the ship.

Another change I've noticed from the original casting to any English translation is that when watching the Zoro and Kuina flashbacks after Kuina's death, In Japanese Zoro says he wants the sword to become stronger for both himself and Kuina, where in every English Dub, Zoro simply says he wants to become stronger than her. This translation is much weaker and has much less impact than the original where he says he wants to become stronger for her instead of stronger than her. Love this series by the way, I never saw the 4kids version and its amazing (in a bad way) to see what they did. They really managed to suck the soul out of the show.
I really hope you keep making this series! It's interesting to see the changes they made.

I first heard about One Piece in 2004 when advertised but never watched it. Years later when I notice its still going, I finally gave it a watch late 2014 which was the funimation dub and now I am a fan. During that time I then knew about the differences between the 4kids dub and the funimation dub and soon realized in 2004 I dodge a bullet by not watching the 4kids dub and now knowing how notorious it is for what it did to this beloved series.

I've always been upset that 4Kids gave up on the show because I wish I could see what they'd do with the rest of it. Imagine having all of Jaya and Skypiea cut. Imagine Ace getting sleepy after Akainu hit him so he takes a nap and they bring him somewhere then continue on without ever talking about him again. Imagine Big Mom's friends being teleported by a wizard while she was eating! Actually, would Big Mom even exist? She'd be promoting obesity in children!

To top everything off, the last episode of 4 kids implies that the straw hat died. Or at least it can be implied. It ends with a giant ship coming down on top of the straw hats and that's the end of their run.
These edits are proof that childhood innocence is bad and children need to see more violent things.
