if you paint it they will chew it, and that is soft wood even low voc paints still have voc

Did you use specific dimensions for their new cage or did you go off of what you thought they would like best? My summer goal is to make my two budgies a bigger cage because I know they're unhappy in their current one that I bought from the store. I really like this set up and now it's my newest inspiration.

That is a great cage and I think you don't need to paint it but if you want to paint the cage its ok.

Nice job with the cage. The shade cloth? that you used looks quite interesting and bird-friendly. I reckon the wood colour is nice as it is. How about using non-toxic varnish or wood stain (not sure if you get such a thing) on the wood to preserve it from sun and water damage?
