- Just how rare is Terraria's rarest item? The Dirtiest Block. When it comes to rare items, Terraria definitely has its fair share, with items like the Rod of Discord, Slime Staff and Coin Gun existing. And while all these items are incredibly hard to obtain, statistically speaking, they don't come close to what we're going to be looking at today, the elusive dirtiest block. Main difference is that for every dirt block in the world you mine, the percent chance of mining a dirt block and having it be a Dirtiest Block INCREASES, while things like Nymphs for nymph banners and rare gold critters never get less rare.

with every normal dirt mined the odds go up slightly
though I'd assume the odds go down quite a bit once you mine a Dirtiest Block
Technically, you could never get a nymph banner. But you will always get a dirtiest block
I also *just* realized something
any rare pre-hardmode drop *technically* gets more rare post-WoF, because now the mod pool is bigger and so the chance of something spawning lowers

In a recent playthroug, I got both the Nymph banner and the Rune wizard banner while I was farming for the Rod of discord. Truly a terraria moment :)

just set up a farming thing in the hallow and got 10 banners, 5 for each (each for 10 kills of them)
I found one on accident immediately into a new playthrough. I was flattening the spawn area so that I could build a starter base/npc housing and I noticed that one block of dirt hadn't grown grass. When I mined it, bam there ir was, the dirtiest dirt block.

I accidentally found it when expanding my base, and I didn't know what it was, so I searched it up and was surprised when I saw the stats of finding it in a large world
I like how one of the rarest items is just a dirt block except it's a pet
i love how when i actually try to grind it i never find it but whenever i Build a small house in a mountain and i dig a small box i find it by random
In a recent playthrough (on a CelebrationMk10 world), I got it while turning a sky island into a glowing mushroom biome for Truffle.
I hadn't heard of it prior (There's a lot from Labour of Love I overlooked completely, previously.), so I was rather perplexed, but, when I figured out that it could be placed in the pet slot, and I saw the pet, it certainly gave me a bit of a chuckle.
I would say, though; yeah, the golden seahorse is probably rarer and harder to get in practice, even if the Dirtiest Block chances are lower on paper.
...if you don't just use the Builder's Workshop, of course, but that *_is_* blatantly cheating. :P
It's nice that you show us how we can get it. Maybe make a video about early game summon weapons like vampire frog staff or other early game summons

I've got em twice, both times they were under my spawn
waldo painting still is definitely rarer, even on a large world there's only a like 40% chance that even one spawns
I got this item on my latest play through. I was mining out a huge area for keeping purity and event arena and got this halfway through, it’s so cool
ah i will never forget that i got this day one of the update while digging a hellavator to test the new melee weapons. didnt know at the time but that was an actual lottery win
U know what makes this not so rare? The fact that somebody already found a seed where you can dig down for about a minute and get a dirtiest block. If it were me I'd keep the seed a secret so it'd still be pretty rare

I had started a new get fixed boi seed and I randomly got it while mining. I was super shocked given that you don’t even mine dirt in that seed until you go fairly higher up.

Found a Dirtiest Block on a large world completely by accident while mining with dynamite, without even knowing the item existed lol
When I started my first 1.4.4 world (small) I randomly just found it whilst digging the hellevator. It remains one of the luckiest things I have done, on par with getting both ancient gold and iron helmets from one skeleton.
Got two of them last week on my very first run of the game. Hadn't played terraria since I was 12, and I came back and mined 2 on my medium world while isolating my pylons. I had no idea they were so rare.
In one world I was bombing a crimson separation thing and 5 dynamite in I found the dirtiest block. I almost trashed it because it wasn’t stacking lol
To this day I’m still blown away that I accidentally got one of these while mining in my last play through.
The worst part is, I might have found one of these, didn’t bother to read te item description and chucked it in the trash for more inventory space. I’ll never know.
it's interesting using a plugin like TEdit to see where these blocks are in your world and you find out one of your tunnels were a few blocks away from one and you hadn't noticed it.
I once randomly got this item very early in the game while building a bunker, great pet, would grind for it again
I got 3 slime staffs from illuminant slimes before I got a rod of discord 😭 (fyi each slime staff is 0.01% drop rate from the illuminant slime while the rod of discord is 0.2%, so technically i should've got 60 rod of discords before I got 3 slime staffs, but chaos elementals are rarer enemies so I can't be sure, although I think it is safe to say that 3 slime staffs is maybe just slightly rarer than a rod of discord)
Everytime I play on zenith seed, As soon as I mine the one dirt it's always the dirtiest dirt block for some reason.
I actually got one on prehardmode when I was mining my hellavator. Safe to say, I had it on for the rest of that playthrough.
I managed to find mine by creating a small world, no specific seed, and destroy it with the DCU. Took me about an hour but I found it!
Wish that it showed up with the potion that shows treasure, or maybe appeared as a slightly off shade of brown on the map. It doesn’t have to be obvious, but there should be something so players don’t just nuke entire worlds to get it.
i kid you not, on my yoyo playthrough i was digging a bunker for my arena for potion prep and setting my spawn, and while digging it out i got the pet. i still shuffle through it as a pet through my characters because its just that valuable to me.

@@nick72486 I guess fundamentally speaking there’s no reason anyone has to get it, so why should the obscurity be compromised? If someone were trying to collect all the pets it might be frustrating, but were that search expanded to all items then The Dirtiest Block would surely be found several times before all paintings were acquired, so it’s not even really holding up something like 100% research completion. I guess if I’m willing to painstakingly comb through my world map for the block I might as well just find it with TEdit, and it would probably be just as unsatisfying.
First time playing 1.4.4, I was playing journey mode and got the dirtiest block before getting the 100 dirt needed to dupe them. Also just use dynamite and you can probably get it pretty early a few play throughs if you bomb random spots on every play through you do

I started a new terraria world a few days ago and I actually found 1 very early on (it was a small world) i didnt even know it was that rare until i saw this, i just thought it was a new thing in the update since i hadnt played in a while.
Got it on accadent and was so confused at first since i didnt know it exisisted and it wasnt going into my favorited dirt stack that i have on me at all times for building. That was my pet for the entired playthrough. I love my dirt block

Farming for specific paintings is pretty awful. Idk about after 1.4.4 but I'm pretty sure the Wally painting is REAALLLY bad to get

my friend found this block randomly in our multiplayer world, did not know what it was, and deleted it...
Best to go for it in the post game with drill containment unit that also requires moon lord to be defeated to obtain this item.
So I got this item on a large world without knowing about it before and it's a good thing I collect at least 1 of every pet/clothing items just as a "ahh I like me collections" so I'm rather happy that that item is off my unknown bucket list lol

Also, I accidentally found the dirtiest block when I was going for the Good Riddance achievement, I just dug a hole until the underworld and used the Terraformer (or Clentaminator upgrade idk).
That honestly surprised me when I actually get one and more surprised that it's really rare.

I think the golden water strider might be even more rare, because I ve never in my life have seen one, still the terraria wiki states that it does exist. (It is an animal but you can catch it so it is an item too)
I just did a run with each class and melee was my second and I got one as soon as I started my hellevator.
The probablilities calculated in the video are only applicable to the first dirt block you mine in the world (as it gets more common as you mine more dirt), therefore it is only the rarest block if you mined a few blocks per world

From what I can remember it is a 1/2500 chance drop from a Pirate Captain
you forgot about the drill containment unit its much better for the job as with the cele you can despawn the dirt if your not carefull

I know it's not really a popular method but another very efficent method (especially in terms of money) is to use a drill containment unit.

bruh i got this thing the other day on my large expert world, i was throwing down bombs between the corruption and the rest of my world and i found it, i didn’t realise it was so rare
I managed to get one pre skeletron, by getting stupidly lucky whilst mining out a fishing/water duping spot on a large world
There was a time where i got a slime staff then left but my world hadnt saved, so i was extremely sad that i lost it, but then the very next slime i killed proceeded to drop ANOTHER slime staff, so atleast i got it back lol
Ive found 3 dirtiest blocks, but i bomb several holes from surface to hell with dynamite to prevent spread. It has a lot of other benefits, too.

Na the banner or final pylon is harder since you can easily find this in about an hour with no delays in farming since you can just mine and create a new world whereas the others you have to spend sooo much time doing and have to either wait for a mob to spawn or do some serious grinding

funny story: I was on tedit trying to find corruption in a SMALL world trying to get the achievement for all corruption gone.

i used a seed to get it (i wanted it) 2 hours later i get it from excavating a hill to make a arena at first i thought my friend dropped his because i did not notice it because of the slime rain
The Dirtiest Block is one of the most Terraria Dev things I have ever seen the Terraria Devs do. I should be sitting here flabbergasted that they would even think of doing this. Instead I am fully ready to mine out an entire world just so I can say I got one. Terraria just does that to people.
