Imagining the hope Sheila must have had when finally being able to tell the teachers and police what had happened to her, only to have it crushed as she was swept away to another state by her abuser is devastating :(
I know, the black despair she must have felt when they arrived at that plot of land and she just knew no one else would be around to help her.
It is really infuriating that New Mexico cops just dropped the case and didn't even bother to inform Arkansas or the other states he took his family to.

Ugh, hearing about how those kids ran excitedly home from school for Christmas vacation only to be killed by this monster absolutely breaks my heart
Honestly, of all the stories I've heard, I couldn't be any more pissed off than to imagine a group of kids coming home from school 4 Xmas, only 2 have this guy kill them off like a sadistic Devil spawn. This story just frigging pisses me off
I am so thankful for your comment. I was listening while packing up for my kids Christmas recital/party then it is break and I knew I wouldn't be able to have enough emotional distance. I know some people don't understand Eleanor's trigger warnings because you are already on a true crime channel. I didn't really get it until I listened to a different channel and was not prepared for the descriptions of animals and children being hurt that particular way on that particular day in my life. I couldn't shake it. And that rubbed off on my primary job of being there for my own kiddos.
So I will listen to this one at another time. I just love her to bits. I just wanted to say thank you for your comment and to Eleanor and her team for caring. It gives me faith in emotionally healthy people becoming the norm.

One of the worst things about that is that of course the school wouldn't go immediately looking for them once they disappeared, because it was the start of Christmas break. What a despicable act. I wish Simmons had been abused in prison all his life instead of just being executed and getting his wish.
It’s just so depressing that the moment Sheila found someone who loved her unconditionally and her life was finally happy it was so suddenly ripped from her. I hope she’s happy in heaven with her husband and kids. Rest in peace.

It gets me so mad that she was abused by the man who brought her into the world and abused by him and when she finally found peace and love she deserved her life was taken by the same man who abused her it makes me not only sick but really mad

Honestly, I don't believe for one second nobody in the family knew about the abuse.
Especially once it was known that Shelia was pregnant and the husband was being looked into.. How on earth could all of that be going on and nobody notices.. Especially the wife.. Idk, I was heavily abused as a kid and they all said that "We had no idea!" When I knew that I had said something multiple times to multiple family members. They don't want to know and will ignore anything that's inconvenient and it's the absolute worse family situation to be trapped in.
They knew and did nothing! She had elder brothers they could've helped her, her mother could've helped her.
But no one did!

@@girlie_ch33se20 this. I grew up in a family with a lot of sexual abuse. When no one believes you, and your parents don’t acknowledge everything, you go numb to it, or take it as reality so you don’t lose your mind. It’s just a thing that you try to forget so you can carry on day to day.
This would have been prevented if social services took Sheila's case seriously from the beginning.

One thing I either didn't catch or wasn't mentioned,how did Sheila give birth to a baby without ANYONE asking about the father? Like the mother? Her siblings? Did no one even care???
They knew she was impregnated by him. Her mother knew. The siblings knew. They all knew. They were too scared of him to do anything about it.
I’m pretty sure his other children were just scared of him and Sheila was.
The mother failed to protect your children as well, but I’m pretty sure she was a victim of his abuse the whole time herself.
It has a psychological effect on people that most don’t understand unless they go through it
What’s even more sad is how Sheila finally found someone that actually loves her so much and someone to heal with, only to die by her father not even a long time after🙁
When she mentioned Sheila was murdered as well, my heart broke even more. Abused her whole life, impregnated by her own father, only to die by him. Life can be so cruel, so unjust. Just, wow.

You're just here to spread information, you try to do cases people might not know about to bring awareness to smaller cases, you don't add scary music or try to make it dramatic, you're very respectful, you give warnings for the people who need them and you genuinely want opinions and input from your viewers.

The mom definitely knew about the abuse. There is no way, especially with such a big family in a small home like she definitely knew.
Apart of me wants to believe that she didn't and was busy with all the other kids since she had a large family. As a mother knowing that type of horror is happening to a child at the hands of your husband that fathered her is sickening

Sexual assaults by family was so common back then because no one took the victims seriously. The mom 💯 knew, but she most likely was abused herself. Still sickening. My mom and aunts were all raped by my grandmother husband. I didn't find out until my mom was literally on her death bed, I never spoke to my grandma or grandfather again. My grandma was lazy and she didn't care about anyone except herself. As long as she didn't have to get off her ass to earn money she didn't care what happened. I believe he sexually assaulted one of my uncles also, but I have no proof.
This could have been prevented, if only the police continued their investigation & inform the other department too. Sometimes it’s hard to only blame the person who committed the crime but the system is way more broken. She literally told them she was pregnant with her father’s child . Such a sad case

He would have killed all of the family just the same. Police knocking on the door, social services taking his daughter (they always ignore the other kids), wife finding out what he did, and all the neighbors staring at him. He would have shot and killed as many as he possibly could right then. It still would have saved plenty of lives, but this sick bastard would have still killed people.

Yeah. Ronald is, imo, selfish. This might as well not be my opinion. This might as well be fact. If you take into consideration what Eleanor said about him, not just his actions, but what he thought as well and so on, you can really see that he never truly cared about his family.

How did Shielas mom not realize when her teenage daughter became pregnant that her husband was the father?
He probably just played only the grandfather, like Josef Fritzl did. She probably thought it was a boy at school who fathered the baby. I like to like she cannot have known at all but......

Sheila's mom knew and no, she wasn't selfish. She was extremely abused by Ronald and was terrified of him, as they all were.
My childhood friend was abused by her stepdad in full hearing of her mom. She never held it against her mom, who denied knowing about it.
The death penalty is more of a mercy than a punishment. A mercy he definetly didn't deserve

This happened here in Arkansas. It was heartbreaking what he did to his family over the years and the culminating massacre over Christmas. His children and his grand children. The house since then has been burnt down and the ground raised and sprinkled with salt.
This whole story just had me pausing whenever a new horror occured.
Abused his daughter for yrs and she ended up pregnant with his child a.d upon reporting the police know and don't follow him next state when he moves. Shocking and disappointed.
The fact that he just had a light bulb moment and murdered his whole family is just chilling. The poor kids. Gosh.

So then why did she go back for Christmas to play one big happy family? In fact why did any of the children who got out went back? I would have cut all contact as soon as possible and alert the police. Even worse, why were they okay with their own children being around this ab.ser? If we continue thinking like you we would have professionals who use understanding criminal minds to predict their Motivation, their type, and their next move. Literally a pregnant girl is hardly something people will look into, but would rather make assumptions that she's "messing around" with boys. It's sick, but society would rather see a girl sleeping around than being abused and turn a blind eye to possible dangerous situations.

The mom definitely knew about the abuse Shelia was going through. She probably knew from the start he was going to be like this and didn’t tell anybody bc she was scared- that was why the abuse went on to her as soon as he got reported for Shelia. Someone in the house knew, even if it wasn’t the mom, someone knew and didn’t say anything. Also, I think a lot more neighbours knew bc if a neighbour was able to spot him kissing his daughter in public, a lot of other people definitely knew. That was probably also why they came for Christmas, if I was the child I would get far far away from him.
Edit: people were definitely right about him. I think the reason why he put the bodies in the cesspit wasn’t only bc to hide the bodies, but maybe to hold some power against them.
Who even lets an abused child go back home to their abuser at all? If they need to get stuff they should be accompanied by police not sent home with more than enough time for the abuser to take the child THE NEXT FRIGGING MORNING and run away to another state.🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

They didn’t have any evidence that’s why they had to pull an investigation and not really take any actions including not letting the child go home but still the police really should of prepared for these kind of things and *what the hell* why didn’t they report to the Arkansas police force!?
I know, I mean there were lots of ample opportunities 2 prevent this from happening, like, oh I don't know, the police doing their job in the 1st place - u know, do a nationwide manhunt after this Simmons guy like they did w. the Beauty Queen Killer & John Wilkes Booth; the wife leaving Simmons w. the kids after a series of constant abuse against her & the children. I wish there was a better outcome 2 this story than it had...so sad & frustrating; esp. the children, who never even had a chance 2 grow up, & have their own lives. RIP ❤♥️❤♥️

There's always a part of these cases that really stick in my memory. For this case, it will certainly be the fact that he threw his eldest sons body in a cesspool and then went back days later and dug through YEARS of human feces to retrieve his sons car keys so he could steal his car too. Absolutely wild.
This is heartbreaking, it’s the most disgusting, disturbing case I’ve heard since the Junko foruta case. I hope the family and all of his victims are happy in heaven 💔

when she mentioned that he was obsessed with his daughter i was PRAYING that it was gonna be a heartbreaking case of "and then this daughter, that he loved so dearly in a very innocent way, died, and it changed something inside of him - and that's what set him on the path to being a terrible person"

Strangulation is a more "intimate" way of killing, and knowing how he was with little girls I am not surprised her strangled her. It was a form of sexual assault that didn't involve sex.
That is true about strangulation, but 8 think he may have had another reason, just because he strangled ALL the children and he shot all the adults, even Sheila, his "favorite". Maybe he was saving ammunition. Who knows? Just speculation, of course.

Not sure about the sexual part. But what does get me is that he chose to strangle the kids over shooting them. As of that were the nicer way for them to go or something? That’s even worse it takes at least three minutes to actually strangle someone to death be a quick gunshot! Poor kids this is so unbelievably awful!

This. Is heartbreaking. The killing of adults is one thing but the infants and children I just… I can’t. They’re so defenceless, so innocent.
I’m curious what could be wrong with the wife/mother. If her daughter was being sexually abused for that long, there are signs. I know and I’m not going into why. But the mother had to be ignoring those signs and then to agree to be up and moved, isolated from the world? There was something wrong with her too. She failed to protect those kids.

It's simple - she chose a man over her kids. A lot of parents, especially mothers, do it. They stand aside and let child abuse happen because they love the other parent/partner so much. It's disgusting.

Moving a lot geberally caused someone to close off because they know making friends makes them end up moving and he was very isolated from peers. That could evolve into much more evil mindsets.

I like that you seem genuinely interested in these cases. You explain things and you try to make things understood by your viewers (motivations and reasoning mostly).

If I was apart of the jury that decided his penalty, I absolutely would not have given him the death penalty. He deserves to rot in jail alone. He's a horrible human being who didn't deserve the easy way out of the mess he made.

Jail is the easy way, and it gives no justice to the victims or their families. Prison isn't like a castle dungeon with stale bread and water. Some "lifers" are living pretty cushy lives at the expense of the taxpayer.

Honestly, this case is a good example of why the death penalty isn’t even effective. Like, in addition to the questionable morality of letting the government kill people and also the fact that sometimes the wrong person is killed, it’s an easy way out for absolute monsters like this guy. He should have suffered in prison for the rest of his crusty miserable life, and the fact that he didn’t is infuriating. I hope all his victims are at rest and that that disgusting man burns in hell.

Hmm I wouldn't say it's an easy out whatsoever. Pit yourself in the position- would you find it easy? Spending 20 years or more on death row which is complete isolation, the psychological torture of knowing that your execution date can be announced any time and that you're going to experience an extremely painful death via either electric chair or lethal injection, is absolutely horrifying.
I'm against the death penalty foe the simple reason that there's no taking it back if its discovered the wrong person was killed. Then there's the morality issue of killing someone and someone having to be responsible for pushing that button making them a murderer also.
It's also playing God. Its proven that it does literally nothing to influence criminals against committing their crimes, absolutely nothing.
Also, it's a fallacy that it's cheaper to execute rather than house a prisoner for life. It actually costs far more to execute. The truth of the matter is that its an industry generating billions of dollars. Consider how many appeals, how many lawyers on both sides that need paying - from taxpayer money, judges, the entire court system staff involved in the ridiculously lengthy appeals process that starts the minute someone is sentenced to death. It's a very dark, disgusting industry that has been sold to us as justice for wrongdoings but the system was designed by the elites and it favours the elites. It's only the poor people who ever get sentenced to death because they are the ones who can't afford to hire a crack lawyer to get them off their charges.
These people deserve severe puunishment but two wrongs don't make a⁴ right. Awful, backwards, and thoroughly hypocritical practice that has no pluses whatsoever. Although, I myself find myself wishing great harm and torture on people who hurt children. But the reality is I don't believe I could carry it out myself and its just the hatred for the perpetrator coming out. They need to be locked up and treated with humanity despite them not affording others the same respect. Our Heavenly Father is the one who should be judging whether someone lives or dies and I'm happy to allow Him to do that, I don't want that responsibility.
My only gripe with the death penalty is that innocent people could be accidentally put to death. It's far and few between but even the cases we know about are too many and there's always work to be done to make sure we reduce or completely get rid of mistakes like that.
I'm for the death penalty because some crimes are too digusting to even let the person live. And if they do end up in a life sentance, we the people have to cough up the money to house and feed these people.
It's a strain on the economy for someone everyone else would rather see gone.
a lot of "life sentences" i hear about have a minimum amount of time in prison before the people are allowed parole. The fact that the prisons can let out the murderers if they are "well behaved" is terrifying to me.
I still might not understand everything properly though please educate me if it doesn't quite work this way.

A lot of movies try to portray serial killers as these cool, intelligent and in control individuals to try and make them more scray. If you fear that just remember this is one of the worst spree killers in US history and he had to jump into a pile of sh*t just to drive a car, there isn't anything more pathetic than him wading in their too find the keys.

The thing is a lot of normal people unfortunately have to buy into that "highly intelligent criminally insane" drivel because the truth is something a lot harder for us to accept. Killing is not a difficult act, of course I don't mean this morally, but that the act of taking another's life when decided upon is shockingly simple, so much so that even the lowest of the low of society can muster the ability to do so, its unnerving to think that a life that has produced so much and been so valued by the people affected by it can be snuffed out at a moments notice by anyone at all with enough dumb luck, but even more than that, it speaks to a much darker side of human nature in all of us that murder seems to be the one act that almost anyone, regardless of age, health, or experience (to a degree ofc) can carry out. And I don't blame them honestly, its just as scary for me to think about how capable me and the people around me are of something so horrendous.

I'm in med school and we are required to visit the hospital a few times each month, and the patient histories I've seen have included people who are living with part of their skulls missing, and also about people who died of an infected wound. It's so terrifying how killing seems to come so easy to serial killers after they've done it once. As if it's nothing but an everyday chore to them. Almost never are killers these intelligent, calculating individuals with a clear motive; they're more often than not either a psychopath who had a taste for murder as a kid by killing small animals or someone who was traumatised to the point of frantic violence upon being triggered. Neither of them calculate much of how the investigation might proceed, and do just the most frantic and panicked cleanups after their crime. It makes them that much scarier

I’ve always loved True Crime and this was the first book that I read. This guy was truly sick. Your stories are great, but it’s like movies & books- the book tells so much more…as if you need to hear anymore of this craziness. I don’t remember this/him being called the hillbilly killer, but it’s been a few years since I read the story. Thanks for another great story!

Of all of the true crime videos i've seen, this is the most sickening and tragic story I have ever heard. The excitement those children must have been feeling as they waited in line to get their "surprise" is so heartbreaking to listen to. It makes you feel like a ghost, trying to scream at them to run but you can't do anything. Such a horrible sick man and i feel so sorry for all of the victims, oh my gosh.
And tbh, it was shocking hearing they were excited knowing he was abusing their mother. When domestic violence happens, its shocks you as a kid, you fear home. But amyway.

usually i’m mainly fascinated by true crime cases and whilst it’s always so heartbreaking all i felt through this one was anger, it’s sad such disgusting people can just get away with things and it’s confusing how someone can even have that thought process to hurt your family the way he did or hurt anyone especially children
The children weren’t a threat to him, so it was easier for him. But the adults would fight back, so he shot them.
I grew up a preacher’s kid and we traveled around “evangelizing” when I was a kid. We were holding a revival in a nearby town to this after this happened ( I couldn’t have been older than 4 or 5) and some of the church members decided to take us on a tour of the crime scene. It traumatized me. I remember going up a hill and getting out and the house had been demolished. I remember seeing an old car with the trunk open, and a little wooden playhouse looking thing…we went over and looked into the empty graves and I remember picking up spent ammunition shells. I will never forget this as long as I live. I was little but I could just feel the evil and just horribly depressing feeling. I remember feeling scared. My older brother and sister remember a lot more than I do but we all still, to this day, talk about how traumatizing it was to see those graves and we all wonder…what were our parents thinking taking us out there when we were just kids and talking about this stuff in front of us? I can still feel the eerie feeling I had that day and I’m 35 years old now. Such a horrible tragedy.

The fact that he had multiple times to realize how vile his actions were but chose to continue the murders. It’s just so sad. As soon as I read "Hillbilly" in the title, sadly I knew immediately that incest would play a huge roll in this story. Sickening, absolutely sickening. I haven't got to the end of this story yet but I really hope to hear that when he was put in jail/prison the other inmates beat the crap out of him every single day. I would like to think that's how his future played out. One can only hope I guess...
Side note: I feel really bad for the medical examiners (and possible interns...?) in this case. Those poor people had to endure such a horrific smell and had to clean that disgusting mans piss and $hit off of those poor victims before they could even begin to do their jobs. They probably still had the stench stuck in their noses as they testified during the trial.
@jennifer prince this man wasn't a "hillbilly" he was from Northern USA. He had never been to the south until he wanted to hide away and not be caught. Unfortunately, a lot of deranged criminals do this to lay low in the mountains and small towns. Where there's not much crime that goes on and their under the radar of po.ice and other people noticing any of their crimes.

my grandma got me interested in true crime, she loved everything like that. I used to watch your videos and tell her about them and she’d find documentaries on them so we could talk about it. She died back in april and every time i watch a video of yours i get comfort knowing im enjoying something she did

As someone who works in a jail, I can say you are definitely right. Sometimes it's impossible to understand how these people think, and other times you just don't want to, because their crimes are so heinous. Of course we get people who you can understand, normal people who make dumb choices, but with the murderers, rapists, child molesters, you just gotta try to not think about their crime
Wow this one hits close to home, literally. I grew up in Russellville. One of the people who got shot and lived is from my church, and my grandpa is the one that sold his son the car he drove. Always said that’s why he wasn’t killed is because he liked the car, because he drove right past the dealership that the car was from. So so sad…

sheila had been groomed from the moment she was born. she obviously realised that what he did was wrong and she was traumatised from it, but it’s her father who raised her and her siblings. she probably felt guilty if she wanted to cut him off, maybe she didn’t want to be asked questions about why she wanted to cut him off. besides social services didn’t do their job. that probably made the kids feel like they weren’t being abused, or that their problems weren’t important.

I am aware that people are programed to believe that this is love and its okay buy there is always a piece deap down that knows its wrong and if you are fortunate to make it out you try your hardest to stay out. Please don't think I make light of the situation or someone's trauma but there is a time in life you have to say Fuck my family. The only reason to return would be to get the younger kids out. You ever look at documentaries on people going to break their families out of cults or other deadly living situations those people were once in the same situation with the same beliefs but they got out and they realized how abusive and controlled their childhoods were and their main goal in life is to go back and get their younger siblings out never to return.

I often go searching for the most twisted and disturbing cases just from morbid curiosity, but this is just... truly horrific. the fact that his disposal of the bodies into and continual use of the cesspool whilst his family were rotting inside is just... indescribable in its sickness. I never understood how Americans have some much respect for people in the army, treating them as gods without even knowing what they’re really like. I’m from New Mexico and I’ve never heard of this case. Thank you for covering it! And yeah, Cloudcroft is incredibly small. I’m surprised no one tried to run him out of town for trying to grab little girls. Most people in rural New Mexico keep firearms.
Same, I’m from Alamogordo which is just down the mountain from Cloudcroft. I spent my weekends up there with my cousin quite often. It’s one of my favorite childhood places and memories. What’s worse is my moms dad committed the same type of abuse against his daughters and grandchildren, including myself. My grandma absolutely know what he did and covered for him. She told me I should never be alone with him and I should call for her if he came into a room with me, this was after he’d already done the worst imaginable to me. As I cried at about 7/8 years old she told me I shouldn’t be in rooms alone with him. She never told my parents and told me to keep quiet because those aren’t things we talk about. I had to spend the whole summer there with them. My mom knew what kind of man her dad was and she still sent me to stay the summer with them. The women in my life never protected me. My mom claims my dad didn’t care about what happened to me that he was only worried about her and what had happened to her as a child. I’ve come to accept how unimportant I was/am to them but my dad absolutely cared and we’ve spoken about it. I know the love my father has for me almost lead him to being a murderer but he chose to not so that he could protect me and be there for me.

I don’t know why people think silence is the best answer when it just creates more victims. IMO if there is a monster in your family then you need to chose a side.
