  • What’s it like to be a working woman in Somalia in 2022 - trying to do a job in a culture where women traditionally take second place to men in many aspects of life?
For many women in the labour force, it’s a daily fight against prejudice.
Discrimination against women in Somalia is a sensitive subject - after all, this is a highly developed culture which has evolved over many centuries. But, BBC Africa Eye asks, is it now time to start thinking differently?
    Can things change?

My mom died recenty (allahu yarxum). she was the one who was paying my studies in abroad after then, my older sister filled my mom’s position to support me continuing my studies. I believe somali women are stronger than somali men nowadays and they are the spine of our society. Hang in there sister , you’re inspiring a lot of women.

Despite the fact that Somali women are more resilient and capable than men, they were the backbone of our society during the civil war. They are the reason we were able to overcome the difficulties we encountered. Despite the fact that they are facing gender violence in various sectors such as job search and educational issues, I just want to encourage them to keep moving forward. So many things wrong with this report, it's riddled with mistranslation and one point of view.
Firstly it's wildly known that journalism is a dangerous sector to work in Somalia for both men and women and those against women working as a journalist/camerawomen which also include women are coming from a place of a concern for their wellbeing rather than being against it from a negative stance.
Secondly translation is wrong, the man says that regarding the religion women shouldn't have to toll and work in what he see's as dangerous work and should enjoy themselves at home and have a man provide for her. He didn't say women were "meant to be enjoyed" as the translation ridiculously put.
And most women working in journalism even in the west are largely reporters whereas the large majority of camera operators in the west are men just like in Somalia and elsewhere, carrying heavy expensive cameras and having to travel up and down.
This report like many others of Jamal Osmans (guy narrating) are full of misinformation, wrong translation and bias. Jamal Osman like many other western reporters never fail to picture Somalia and Africa in a negative light for a quick buck.

A Somali woman is more privileged in Somaia, than a western woman is in the west. Their husbands work and provide for them, and when Somalia gets better their quality of life gets better. Once Somalia has better infrastructure, more jobs, and higher income, the Somali woman will be way happier than a western woman. So the real problem is poverty, once we tackle that it'll be the happiest place on planet earth.

As that can be a serious factor, as to why allot of women in the past were trapped having to rely on men. An abuse of power in their own homes, since they were not able to live for themselves, if they wanted to and leave an abusive relationship for example they could not or feel trapped because they have had to rely on someone else to provide money. Due to their terrible living standard in a lack of income and freedom of choice. In a capitalist society, money = power.

But these types of westerners are stupid and there are stupid people everywhere. Me personally I do not agree with, all but one interpretation of the muslim idea of a hijab, it was something that mabye protected women years and years ago. But now days they serve as a divide between the sexes and mostly force women to cover up more rather than to feel free in their own bodies, because the more you force one sex to cover up, the more taboo their bodies become. Thats never a good thing, but I also would never discriminate against a hijab wearer and I am for freedom of expression when it comes to clothing, except Nazi propaganda shirts, tattoo's ect. Personally I know and am befriended with multiple hijab wearer's here in Germany and the discrimination they face, is mostly from idiots and bigots who cannot even give you a good enough argument as to why they should not. They will not be discriminated against by anyone sensible, but also unfortunately like anywhere else that depends on the country. For example France is bad in this instance as they have politically tried to ban headscarves in public locations. Absolutely awful stuff and completely unfair.

@Shimmy Shai Thanks for the reply but here’s a couple of things you missed. For one, both men and women who are suffering from mental health issues are usually the ones who became disconnected with their manhood or womanhood. Their lifestyles are being reversed through socially, economically, politically, environmentally, etc and the impact can be measured how unhappy they’re becoming which they resort to all kind of vices such as drugs (legally or illegally), alcohol, escapism, etc.
Some of the richest and wealthiest zip codes have one of the highest suicide rates. The correlation is there but some people are blind to it. Now, I do agree that women or anybody else should not face any type of violence whatsoever, but this isn’t the case with respect to occupation. In our culture women, children, the elderly, and the disable are considered a protected class and they should have their basic needs met. It’s the men who take on most of the burden in resolving the issues of the society since they are always the ones in front lines to defend and provide them.
As far as the western “women rights” is concern. It’s absolutely one of the most delusional and asinine talking points I’ve ever heard. So you mean to tell me that we tell women “hey you’re free to do whatever you want” which includes becoming strippers, prostitutes, and sexual objects in the workplace just so they can be replaced by a younger hotter looking one as soon as they pass their youth.
Social media is an indication of how men in the West view their own western women. Soon as she takes off her clothes is the moment she gets attention, likes, and money. The result is witnessing the biggest “independent” women being the most depressed and over medicated women in modern society.

While some people may take this attitude for hostility it’s in fact quite the opposite. The reason a lot of these men oppose this lady from going around filming in a stateless country is quite obvious, this isn’t LA, Mogadishu is currently unsafe for even men if they are carrying around a big camera.
Also a lot of the men were telling her to get a job that requires less physical labor like and office job, so their issue isn’t about a woman working but about the physical difficulty of the work and her safety. She was even told to have someone carry it for her, now you might say that “she has a right to carry it anyways” but you have to see that they are actually just telling her to live more comfortably and not burden herself.
In another instance a man tells her that women’s bodies are meant for resting and enjoying herself but the translation twists it to imply a sexual meaning which is not true.
All in all, this determined girl should be able to film if she likes it but the circumstances in Somalia are difficult for everyone and it really doesn’t help when a huge news organization like the BBC twist the information to fit their narrative and portray a false image of the country.

If the government cannot guarantee the safety of the whole country and make independent decisions without interference from foreigners like the US, Kenya, Ethiopia and Emirates and also there are foreign forces in the country like Amisom and US, then it’s still stateless. Somalia had a real powerful government back in the 1980s and 1970s but not today, hopefully in the future if Somali people unite and work together. While Somalis are divided then the enemies will always try to take advantage and keep the country like today.
When I talk about LA I mean for filming with a big camera, in Somalia filming isn’t as common so it is of-course less safe and it would attract negative attention but otherwise it’s not that dangerous most of the time.
I already went to Somalia back in 2011 to Hargeisa, and it was very nice, and I will come again inshallah.

They complain about little things and acted like "patriarchy is stepping on us" while women from less developed countries are facing actual discrimination. Instead of complaining self-righteously on social media, they should practice what they preach and actually come to countries like Somalia and do some real work. That's my point.
