it's because of the animosity that has always existed between Hollywood artist and East coast, Gene was east he had to travel on the weekend to LA to shot the shown and then he would leave back home, they probably saw him as a stranger and not part of their cult so they kept him away from any awards, this seems to be the must logical answer I can come up with.
I can think of at least a dozen hosts who deserved an Emmy win or nomination but didn't.
Unfortunately, Gene was in the same era as Peter Marshall of “Hollywood Squares” fame, a real Emmy darling who won FOUR times. The Emmys have a historically bad habit of repeat winners.
Richard Dawson matched 99% of the time in the head to head matches. He also was a superb actor and a great comedian!!

Yes. "Gunsmoke" was set in Dodge City, Kansas during the 1870's. The Arkansas River runs right through Dodge City and is apparently a good fishing river today, so I have to imagine they could have gotten plenty of fish back then.
Irving was a plumber so they shaped the cake into a plunger (but I admit to thinking of a wrench first).
Later they start using plunger as the answer or "plumber's helper".

Somebody in the audience started to say, "How fat was she?" The show still hasn't hit its stride. We have the long slender microphone and people are starting to learn that calling on anybody but Richard Dawson in the head-to-head match is like playing Russian Roulette but we haven't evolved the audience participation yet.

The point of Match Game was to think those answers, but to come up with something more benign or suggestive of the "dirty" answer. That's why the later iterations of the game didn't fare all that well. They didn't get the point.
