    The world’s obsession with sports is fuelling a “dangerous drug culture.” With billions of dollars being spent on sponsorships, spectator tickets and athlete purchases across the world, the pressure is on for sportspeople to perform nearly superhuman feats, so it is not surprising that some of them consider taking performance-enhancing drugs to live up to their fans’ expectations. But do these drugs really work? Furthermore, in light of recent doping scandals such as fall from grace of Lance Armstrong, how dangerous are the health effects? Dr Maryanne Demasi investigates.

    An unusually factual piece - thanks (from someone who has reported many times on different aspects of doping - as a journalist, TV sports commentator, and writer)!

      This, what a fucking ridiculous notion that we as human beings cannot choose what we can and can't put into our body, specifically when what we're putting in is already NATURALLY made within us, oh but brb take this anti depressant to fix your serotonin, take this drug to fix your dopamine and take this drug to fix your ADHD, but don't use steroids....steroids=BAD!
      The ONLY people making this argument are average lemmings who think that the drugs are what makes the athletes or they are delusional enough to believe they can actually stop them. Until you can monitor an athlete 24/7 or have something hooked up to measure their bloodstream/hormone levels around the clock, forget about testing.
      People just need to get the fuck over it, it's 2014, athletes want to be bigger/stronger/faster. If you want to go watch your uncle hit a ball 200 yards, then trip on his way to first base and then get injured for 3 months, go for it. We want to see freaks baby, I want to see a Hockey player bite a puck in half, I want to see a football player jump a field goal, like legit jump it in instead of kicking it, I want to see someone dunk from half court.
      Let the players decide what they do with their body

      @@TruthOverEverythingLike testosterone, you shouldn't take Prozac and other anti-depression drugs if you don't need it. In fact, you shouldn't be undergoing any "treatments" or "therapies" if you don't fucking need it. Doing stupid shit like this is bad for you, there's no 2 ways about it.

      HGH raises IGF-1.
      IGF-1 cause muscular growth.
      It's even crazier in the presence of other steroid compound.
      These are facts. How the fuck could they have found it did nothing?

    World anti-doping agency President Witold Banka has warned that the coronavirus pandemic should not be used as an excuse for violating doping rules.
    Banka underlined that the integrity of the world anti-doping system will be maintained and all cheaters will be caught.
    The coronavirus outbreak has caused many countries to suspend their testing activities.
    The WADA chief also noted that due to the postponing of the 2020 Tokyo games, those whose doping bans expire this year will be allowed to compete in the Olympics in 2021.

      The Tokyo summer games were rescheduled to 2021 due to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, which has paralyzed global sport.
      WADA has already banned Russia from all major sporting events for 4 years. WADA has accused Russian authorities of tampering with a database used by a Moscow laboratory in order to cover up doping cases.

    At the end of the day these are athletes the fittest and healthiest people in the world. Why is there not as big a deal over tobacco and alcohol. These cause more deaths and social problems than people looking after themselves through hard work and diet, oh and also a boost through steroids. This film is more scaremongering. Laughable!!

    • @rwscotland
      @rwscotland Před 9 lety

      AndrewG Yeah I understand your point. All I am trying to say is steroids and Performing enhancing drugs cant be all that bad as people who have chronic illness are given these to extend there period of life. There have never been proper studies on the side effects and long term effects of these drugs. Very few people die from taking these but thousands from a simple drug like aspirin. Take a handful of them and you be in a very serious condition and these are over the counter tablets.

    I'm one of those people that think Lance Armstrong was unfairly persecuted in order to cover-up ubiquitous doping in professional cycling. They were all on drugs, who's to say that if nobody was on drugs, Lance Armstrong would have been a champion anyway because of his genetics, he was just evening the playing field so his natural ability could shine through.

    Why not have a separate event where you can do what you like and take what you like?
    I'd happily watch someone run the 100m in 8secs and so on....
    Instead of pushing athletes underground, why not help then achieve more and see how we can push the human experience. With greater understanding these therapy's could help non athletes.
    Just a thought....

    • @wach9191
      @wach9191 Před 9 lety +1

      Because that is stupid? Steroids increases performance, but in large doses they become harmful, so in event where everyone is allowed to use as much as he can, the moron who don't care about his life will take shit loads of steroids, even if he dies afterwards. So it would be competition of how much steroids can human body take, not an actual sport. Also they would still cheat in "no steroid" competitions just like they do now.

    • @josephmoriarty1693
      @josephmoriarty1693 Před 9 lety +1

      Kristiano Bertucci I think you missed the point. It was more a statement about forcing people underground to take drugs unregulated. People will always abuse a system regardless of regulation. The things with drugs abuse is it comes down to better education in a huge amount of cases. With better exposure and research the drugs could become more beneficial to all people...
