- Watch as the FGS Hamburg conducts tight turns while inbound to Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, UK. This was training being provided to the Germany Navy by the Royal Navy.
FGS Hamburg (F220) is a Sachsen-class frigate of the German Navy. The frigate is one of many German warships to participate in Fleet Operational Sea Training (FOST) provided by the Royal Navy, usually out of His Majesty's Naval Base Devonport. This includes making tight turns around Plymouth Sound in all weathers; such as high winds and rain.

Good to see the German Navy in action. Wish we’d never been on opposing sides, they know how to sail with some of the best equipment to ever be created, if not the best.
Well, British and German air forces are doing the air policing at the Baltics, always with British/German cockpit crews 😊

@@zonk2k4 Exactly - now we`re on the same side... 🤝 Let`s make sure, it stays that way from now on.
Excellent planning. Wheel over and use of both engines led to a perfect manoeuvre. Good job.
Excellent Seamanship!
What is the manoeuvre called, is it a Williamson turn?
It's always amazing to see a ship weighing 6,000 tonnes and 140 metres long turn around in such a small area, and the Sachsen class doesn't even have a bow thruster!
Thirty years ago, I was allowed to sail on a cargo ship that was perhaps 90 metres long during a change of anchorage. We sailed into an even tinier harbour basin and I thought it would be impossible to ‘park’ the ship properly there, but the captain moved the ship with a calmness of mind, as if he were pushing a shopping trolley back into the berth. Incredible people, these sailors!
Brilliant video it was great to see the German war ship Die" Hamburg, turning etc thank you for a nice bit of video work well done

Also, Bayern geht gar nicht.
This training (usually minus the high winds) can also be witnessed regularily in own waters: Eckernförde and Kieler Förde
Well, I hope they got good marks for their sailing. It certainly looked nice and neat.
It certainly did! 😁
Wow, what a maneuver. That fast in a narrow harbour. Possible only with this modern and fast responsible systems.Navigare necesse est👍👍
Devonport looks such a challenging dock to enter. No wonder it is used for sea training.
Fun to watch and very thoughtful for them to do the manouvers in full view of the shore.
Thank you Barb! Oh yes, they do lots of manouvers around Plymouth Sound. This is them inbound so they have no choice! But you can also see them making the same moves around the Plymouth Breakwater, which is used for training.
I visited both in 2013 and Keil to see the U-Boots. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you 🙏 very smooth U turn 👍👏👏👏on 💨 windy 🌬️ day 🛳️ ☝️
Being a citizen of Hamburg I must say that our grey motoryacht behaves quite well in the maneuvers (at least by watching from the outside, maybe there was some yelling on the bridge...). But - there is always a but - I noticed corrosion marks here and there. So there is some room for improvement, I believe. Go on fellows, keep her tidy! 🙂 And it is almost a shame that we couldn't watch the moment of docking.
April 2023 the "Hamburg" had a maintenance check up 😊
Nothing you can do about it. Its a sea going heavy duty vessel. It aint a cruise liner, that is painted after every single cruise almost. Also, that corrosion doesnt really go in to the material, but is merely superficial.
Nice shot with great close-ups.
The most insane thing is, the Hamburg could have most likely done the same turn going full speed. Its insane how agile she is. Especially consideing she displaces almost 6000 tons.
Awesome, made it look easy!! Masters at work.
Super vidéo , le bruit du vent excellent !! Félicitation...
At first I thought the video was sped up, but just an awesome view!
Cool training footage of that fine ship. Thanks for uploading and thumbs up! :)

Nice. It's sailing along steadily at 11.12 knots.
no doubt she'll find her way far and about in the south seas where she will be welcomed with open arms and beautiful sunshine.

Pure Eye candy is all i´m gonna say.
I'm ex Royal Navy 85/92 server on hms intrepid which was Portsmouth based ( pompey) and the 4 times we came in to guzz ( Plymouth) it was always windy, raining and a hard job getting in. I got a draft for hms drake for my 6 months off from ship but got it changed to hms nelson. I loved pompey, hated guzz. What I wouldn't do now to be 17 again. Wouldn't care where they drafted me.😁
How can you say you hate Plymouth over dog sh1t city 😂
It probably wasn't but it looks like it got quite close to the shore on that turn.
Yes I haven't had them disappear around the corner quite like that before! Certainly looked close but still the other side of the bouys. 😁
The area is very narrow so it got very close to the shore, indeed. However, the manouvres are always planned in safe water depths and only the more experienced officers of the watch manouvre thought Plymouth. There are weeks, if not months, invested in planning this passage.👍

@@btgatv Wooo whoooo!

Nope. But it detects stealtjfighter at over 100 miles
Nope. Thats the radar of the hamburg. One of the most sophisticated radar systems there are. They could, without any problems, do airtraffic control for london heathrow airport, and still have radar range to spare. And they would be more accurate at it then the radar systems heathrow has installed on its own sensor masts.

What do the Signal flags DRAB mean?
It's the international call sign.
"Delta Romeo Alpha Bravo" is the international call signal and NATO Code of the German Navy Frigate "Hamburg".
War!
I wonder if the F 127 will also get such a good rotating radar like this one. Because F 126 won't, as she will be just an Anti-submarine warship
I wish there would be tokyo drift music in the background :D
Hehe that would be cool but sadly not allowed on CZcams!

..." WE"RE BACK !!"😆
1. They had a port pilot on board.
2. It was pretty close to the red buoy and the rocks so not in the middle of the channel. The pilot was happy to steer this maneuver with a decent engine? Why so narrow, there's a great bay with all the time it needs to play it safe.
Risky with high winds.
Not really. These ships have great maneauverability and everything, so no real danger. Also, that wind iskt really much on a coast. Only like 6bft to 7bft. Maybe in stronger gusts 8bft. Thats like not a lot of wind for a naval vessel wih experienced crew. Which the Hamburg (the ship in this video) has.
I see she’s without SSMs given the empty racks. You’d think given recent events they’d be armed….
Well, we Germans kind of dropped the idea of going to GB fully armed 8-)

How would these warships manage tsunami or a rogue wave?
Ships usually have a stabilisation system, warships included. Ballast tanks of water can be asjusted to alter the weight distribution across the ship.
@@CobraEmergency I agree. But when an unexpected wave, a rogue wave. Where it's 60 to 80 feet high. It hits the ship's broadside, stern, maybe dead on. A person is staring straight up at this wall of water, not to mention thousands of tons of water. Another fascinating story of a perfect storm, Typhoon Cobra. December 1944.
@@scorpion19142001 Tsunami waves only raise near the cost to any meaningful size and they don't happen surprisingly. Rogue waves only appear in storms. So it's very unlikely the wave would hit the ship broadside or stern, because the waves in a storm generally all come from one direction, rogue waves included.
@@shi01 Rogue waves are unpredictable, and not before or after a storm. It's a combination of several factors of several waves that meet each other's. There are stories from Cape Hope, Skeleton Coast, (this for the most part where hurricanes are born) Cape Horn of killer waves. Where there were no storms, just the Atlantic meeting the Pacific. There is the story of the Ocean Ranger, and yes it was a very violent storm. The perfect storm, I think the movie was good as well as the book. There was when a Rogue marrying a tsunami, as it is getting closer to land.
You mean... The perfect storm... ?
KSM Soldaten bei 5:30 🫡
More likely from the "Seebataillon"...
Those winds and waves are nothing. Go to the North Atlantic in November and December than you will know what real rough weather is like. The swells are so high you have to turn and ride the swells or they will damage a ships gun and missile launchers on the Forcastle.
Is the aft radar above the Phalanx gun carcinogenic? I wonder if subatomic particles such as carcinogenic causing gamma rays, I believe can be deflected when it hit something like lead ships paint and be deflected on to a crews station .... please check it out. Another thing is lead ships paint good for overall sailors health and well being? Are all these "gotchas" deliberate?
In what era of naval warships do you live in? Radars have not been as destructive as they used to be for ages now and the paint is not lead-based.

Still till this day, the sight of that ship has different reactions for many Americans and English. My grandfather for one.
No Anti Ship Missiles loaded....
It has 2 x 4 starters for Harpoon Anti ship missiles. Besides this, the tactical role of this ship is air defence in a squad of warships in NATO missions, and defence of the Baltic Sea and neighboring countries against ballistic missiles. Regard it a seaborne Patriot system with a 500 km range radar, delivering air defence data also for other units.
