- If you're going on a cruise, you need to know this! Unfortunately some cruise passengers are surprised & upset to find out that they should not wear these things on a cruise. Beyond cruise line dress codes, wearing these clothing items might be against the rules or even illegal (in some cruise ports of call).
At the very least, you'll want to be prepared for other cruisers disapproval, especially in the cruise ship main dining room.
These are 5 things not to wear on a cruise. If you're a first time cruiser, this is great information to know. Even experienced cruisers may not be aware of all on this list.
These cruise tips will help cruise passengers avoid some cruise mistakes & faux-pas. Carnival cruise passengers, as well as cruise travellers on all cruise lines need to be aware of these cruise do's & don'ts.

Maybe on Christmas pajamas are ok. How hard is it to put on a pair of shorts and a t shirt.
@@user-zx1kf4qs6d : I have heard this being talked about recently. PJs on Christmas morning is a great plan. I do that every year. I also take my best PJs and my family and I go to the movies in them. It's a great tradition for us.
I’m always amazed how slummy some people can be!!
Some swimsuits (thong) should also be banned. Young kids should not have to see a women’s exposed backside while at the pool. (One of the reasons we will never do a Carnival cruise ever again)
I lived in Italy as a kid, (late late 60’s)we went often to the Vatican. The guards would just turn people away, no covers at all. The vendors outside the grounds made $$ selling tops/coats etc that would be accepted to enter the Vatican.
I don’t agree that PJs should ever (not even Christmas) be allowed.
And gross t-shirts should be banned as well! Blood/guts/snakes/ and foul language for just a few examples.
As you said, you are going to a restaurant or buffet be clean & dressed! Sadly Americans think PJs are ok everywhere🤦♀️ How far our society has fallen.
We love to cruise and do so often, not a trip goes by that I wouldn’t see someone so crass and inappropriately dressed.
And the other country laws somehow don’t apply to these stupid Americans.
Thanks for trying to educate people.
They probably wouldn't want those swimsuits that expose your whole butt like they wear in Brazil
Did not know about camouflage clothing but don’t wear it anyway. Think the cruise lines should mention it. Also get dressed for breakfast or order it to your room.
It's so much easier to pack for a cruise these days. I remember 40 years ago having to pack gowns and dresses for seven nights. I enjoy the more relaxed dress rules, but there is a limit. In my opinion, it comes down to common sense and respect. I think you handled the topic very well.
I can't remember the last time I wore a gown or dress.... and that makes my wife very happy.
First, pyjamas or dressing gowns are for the personal space of the wearer, ie, if you would not wear them out at home (assuming you’re older than 5-6) then don’t wear them out when you are cruising. Second, it is the cruiser’s responsibility to find out what is and isn’t allowed and it is actually stated on your contract at least with Celebrity and I assume (I may be making an ass out of myself here) the same holds true for the other agencies.
That feels crazy to me, haha. I don't even have a dress, and definitely not a gown. As a person who works at home, lives by myself my whole life and travels for myself, the idea of having to dress up just to impress other people I don't care about it too annoying.
Dear God, the fact that someone would even have to ask about pjs in dining room!
Or thong swimsuits
I agree with the PJ rule. If you want to wear them order room service.
Ileana, hopefully the folks who need to see this are watching as well as the rest of us reasonable and respectful folks. Love your videos!!
It really makes me angry that some people think that they are the exception to all rules. A cruise ship is a private company that can set any policy they feel is appropriate for their customers. Follow the rules or don't cruise , simple solution!!!
Exactly. It’s not public transportation.
If Carnival doesn't implement their rules, rules become usless, I seen some very disturbing thing on Carnival ship including drugs being sold in broad daylight by the bar...Shiplife reported that the following week. I didn't report for my own safety. 😮😮😮😮I will NEVER board the Carnival Conquest EVER lawlessness on that ship!
This applies to virtually anything, including rules at Walmart, rules at McDonald’s, rules in the grocery store. These are not public spaces, you do have to follow the rules for everyone’s comfort.
@@stacythat1sttwin504 Fully agree about Carnival!!! Did it once, NEVER again. It seemed to cater to the lowest / rudest people. Our son was in the pool when he was hit in the head with a beer can!! Some guy in the hot tub thought it funny to toss it!! The jerk never apologized!
I believe there should still be dress appropriate for certain places and times. Unfortunately it wouldn't surprise me if the ppl who don't want to follow any rules eventually pressure the cruise lines to cater to them. It's too bad.
No one has any class, morals, or respect anymore. Including for themselves.
How true...how often do we dress up any more...
No way.. some cruiselines hold the line.. and the guests on the more upper crust clientele knows better. Holiday or children is not an exception...I was taught as a child what was ladylike and etiquette. Come on people. Really? Don't you know better? I saw it once or twice in buffet and everyone was peering at the robe wearing passengers. I believe I saw a mgr walk over and advise politely and graciously. No!! To your question. Its not your kitchen at home or dining room. Even at home I don't do that in my dining room!? People I believe just have no pride or don't know any better and were never taught which is sad. The camouflage is a huge rule. I don't think people should get upset. I love to see people bring out their style but this one is kinda obvious. The pj and robe. Stay in cabin or the spa. Period. No exceptions. Let's be honest. No one wants to see me nor would I wear a robe or pj's to a dining rm or other public area other than spa. It goes both ways.. I don't want to see anyone else like that either. We travel this way to see beautiful sights and how nice and fashionable everyone gets when you're dining Take pride. It shows class ..I can't believe this is even a topic but glad you brought it up. I saw it once actually on a cruise line that gave a great deal(will remain nameless) we were surprised, thought it was like a candid camera thing then disgusted, and quite embarrassed for them. Never went on that cruiseline again for that and other reasons. Just seems if you want yo be in robe or pj's (on my) get room service. Manners.. everyone wanting to push the envelope.. what was always right is now wrong and what was wrong is now right. No way. Won't catch me doing it or watching it. Level of cruiseline says another. When a few sneak in thinking they can get
awa y with it...they are politely told of the APPROPRIATE attire. There are cruises that are just for you if you really think that's acceptable. They are cheap cruises. I'm sorry....don't want to offend anyone; but they seem to not care if they offend anyone or their dining experience. Hats...always take them off at the table. Another etiquette rule. Also in a house of worship..hats off and cover up. You walked in there. Respect others and the house of worship and local customs. Gotta end with NEVER SAW EITHER A SEE THROUGH COVER UP IN DR. Why do they call these cover ups? Not the coverups as days of old. They should not be called cover up but I understand. Guess people have no pride in themselves or for others. Sad state of affairs.
@@reillydog11I have started dressing up again. I'm sick of tshirts and leggings. I've started wearing blouses with nicer sleeves and details. And I feel so much better.
@@dke8440. Dining. The word is dining.
I chatted with someone on a cruise elevator once when I saw him wearing camo. I asked if he wore a lot of it and he said yeah, that his luggage was full of it. Our next port was Jamaica so I told him about the no camo rule. He looked at me like I was crazy and laughed. Ok bro, you can fk around and find out.
Also, if I were on my balcony and heard you filming, I'd fangirl so hard 🤣
You have to be careful in Jamaica and other countries like that because they can do whatever they want!!! My friend was there with her teenage son and they were fixing to get back on the ship and they hand searched him. All he had on was his bathing suit!!!! There was nothing they could do!! SOOOOOO you better be careful!!
I have read the "no camo" in certain ports on several sites, and it seems a pretty easy rule to follow. People need to follow the rules of the countries/sites they visit, including practices and dress codes. I also agree that pajamas and baseball caps should not be allowed in a dining room.
Interesting that some people are suggesting that cruise ships should not visit ports of call where camouflage is illegal. What about the rest of us who want to go to those places and have no problem with the no-camo rule? It would be better for those people who don’t like the rule to just not book itineraries to those destinations instead of trying to ruin for the rest of us. People are weird.
Agreed! Some people just can't understand why the rest of the world shouldn't have to do things their way. Besides, if cruises never traveled to countries where some people don't agree with all of the rules, they'd never leave port! 😄
Not weird, lazy, classless and entitled. They think the entire world revolves around them and the lack of any history or culture being taught in schools is partly why.
If you travel internationally you need to comply with local laws. If you do not wish to comply with local laws do not travel to them.
No pj GROW UP !!
There is place where you may wear CAMOUIFAGE-------THE MILITARY!! Just JOIN UP!!!!!
We’ve reached a point where so many people have a sense of entitlement where they’re going to do whatever they want to. No rules apply to them, like the idiot who wouldn’t ditch the camo attire. Sad. Thanks for posting. Helpful video.
So true...tired beyond belief of entitled people...stay home and wear what you want...would you go to a restaurant in your town in your pj’S...Please....GROW UP
Every country in this world has its own laws. Don't like it? Stay away. When you are a guest into a country, museum, plac4e of 3worshop, if you cannot be bothered to show respect for their customs, then stay home.
Or men that dress as women....come on now
@@richfla How about women that dress as men ?
Ask yourself, what exactly are these Rambo wannabes trying to prove?
I agree with the no pyjama and robes rule. You are not at home you are basically in a restaurant. I enjoyed your presentation.
It’s fun to see you broadcasting from your balcony. A nice change of venue.
Most of these points come down to a few basic rules of living within a society; respect for other cultures and religions ; good manners towards other people and basic comment sense. Unfortunately these days a lot of people only think about themselves and think that the whole world should bend to there low principles.
I agree with the dress codes. You're not in your own home, put some respectful clothes on! If I want to see strangers in pajamas I can go to Walmart. The camo thing is what it is, our own personal freedoms in the US or Canada are not a world wide custom.
The problem becomes “ who gets to define what “respectful or appropriate clothing” means?” Your definition may be different or even opposite of mine. Three piece suits in this part of the world usually invoke caution and fear of trouble, not respect. Typical “in the hood” style wear will invoke a similar reaction but for a slightly different fear of trouble. Each of those are considered respectable in the right circumstances.
I agree Byron. The cruise lines should decide, and enforce the standard that fits with their majority clientele. Personally I prefer not to dine in a suit, or as if I'm in the hood somewhere.
And that is why the cruise lines set their own dress code@@byronhaley1566
No robes in any restaurant buffet or dining room
I will admit I wake up at 6 am and have ran to the coffee shop at 6 am grabbed coffee and scurried back to my room to dress for breakfast
Your Walmart comment had me laughing out loud
I loved that you filmed on the balcony. This was such a relaxing video to watch especially regarding the topic at hand ❤️😊
I can’t believe people would think u could wear pajamas to breakfast!! It’s not your kitchen at home- it’s a restaurant! Thanks for the video😊
I agree 💯 with the no robe and pajamas at breakfast. This should go without saying, but, with as casual as people seem to have become, it sadly has to be said.
I’m a Carnival cruiser. I’ve been to a couple of ports where camo isn’t allowed. Carnival made it clear in writing and announcements that the attire was prohibited on the island. It may have changed since, but the passengers were instructed not to wear it.
Same with NCL, they let you know.
I got back from a cruise on Carnival two days ago. We were told camo wasn't allowed. I didn't see anyone wearing camo.
Thanks for the info about cammies. I had no idea it was actually illegal in some countries. As former military, I do know that it is not a good idea for many reasons to avoid military looking clothing of any kind as a visitor. As to robes, pjs, swim wear and other clothing...You are not in your home! You are in public places (i.e. restaurants, etc.) and those things are inappropriate or even prohibited in many places in your own towns/cities so I don't understand why anyone would be surprised or offended if they are turned-away. Of course, we all see some really inappropriate things in our own land-based lives so not a big shocker some of that bleeds over into the cruising world.
There is actually a dress code pretty much everywhere. It varies from country to country and place to place. Swim wear is appropriate at the beach or the pool. Most dining areas on board or on land also have them. They can vary. If the main dining room is having a formal dinner night you will not be seated there if you are not wearing a tie and or suit/dress. Other dining areas are usually available. P.J.s to breakfast, If you can wear them I can wear what I sleep in. Most places on board or land would have issues with that. Rightly so.
Numerous people on the camo cruise commented on numerous sites that the cruise director announced the camo rule numerous times and it was on app or paperwork also. People think the rules don’t apply to them.
Wow, very interesting
I admit I didn't know about the camouflage rule but I know now.
It is not that people don't think that the rules apply to them, it is because it is such a ludicrous rule that people don't think it is real. It is a rule because wearing camo can make you look like the military or police. If your military and police can be imitated with Bass Pro shop T-Shirts and Carhart Hats you have a bigger problem than what tourists are wearing and should be concentrating on that instead. If I buy a camo shirt at Wal-Mart and get confused as police that is saying something about the state of the countries military preparedness, and it is not saying something good. The camo rule also applies to pink camo as well. If a girl is wearing a oink camo bathing suit, I highly doubt that people are going to mistake her for the police. If your citizens are that confused then you need to spend more money on your education system.
@@kathrynfahm6762is that the reason? Maybe they don’t want you making fun of their uniforms.
@lesleymcneill1403 Hahaha. Fair enough.
Pajamas, bathing suits at a ship's restaurant or dining room: NO! Get room service if you want to lounge in your PJs. Ball caps in the MDR? Go to the buffet. When did we lose all respect for rules of etiquette even as those rules evolve?
When?….the moment we started the “you do you Boo” catchphrase nonsense
I agree! No pj's when dinning on a cruise.
Hi Ilana - Love your cruise videos. You and Gary Bembridge are the only two cruise blogs that I feel are worth following. Now a quick twist. My wife and I flew to Buenos Aries earlier this year for a HAL cruise around South America. It turned out that Gary was just getting off the ship the day we were getting on. Now after see this video, it seems that the day we got off the Rotterdam in Ft. Lauderdale from our southern Caribbean cruise, you were getting on! And these are the only two cruises we took this year. Even with all the ships out there the cruise world can be small at times. Take care. Look forward to new videos.
Same goes for flights. It is tacky to wear pjs in public.
Thanks for another informative video. At the risk of being deemed a stuff shirt, I don’t really think that PJs should ever be allowed! Whether folks like it or not, the fact is there are appropriate ways to behave, dress, and respect others on cruises. Some are stated, while others are a case of, if you know, you know. Just because you paid for the trip does not entitle you to have blatant disregard for the rules!
You make an interesting point about your dress being a way of showing respect to others. I come from an Italian family although I'm an American, and that is taken very seriously in Italy. No Italian would dare to be seen in shorts anywhere besides their home and the beach. I think that's true of most Europeans - years ago, I worked with a German lady who told me that they could always tell who the Americans were because they wear shorts everywhere. To be fair to my countrymen, I have seen other nationalities who are just as bad or worse, particularly the British.
What would be the difference between an adult wearing a robe vs a someone in a bathing suit with a coverup? Fundamentally little difference between a robe and majority of bathing suit coverups
Recently sailed on a Princess cruise from Los Angeles to NYC through the Panama Canal and Princess had the camo issue printed in their literature on the app and the website.
A COVER-UP is used to COVER-UP! What do these fools not understand about that?
@@elcaballeronycYou shouldn't wear a bathing suit and a cover-up to the dining room or buffet. Grow up, people!!
It basically comes down to self respect as well as respecting others. “No shoes, no shirt, no service” is in many restaurants. If it is a pool snack bar then swim gear would be fine but in the restaurant I say no.
An exception, on NCL Christmas morning sailings they alowed families with matching christmas pajamas to eat in the buffet. It was a lot of fun!
Love the sound of the waves! I find it sad that adults need to be told what is proper attire and what’s not. What is happening???!!!
I like the background of the moving water much better than a still room. It also emphasizes more of what it's like to be on a cruise.
People have lost the true meaning of style. You should never wear pajamas anywhere outside. Love your videos. ❤
About 10 yrs ago I went on a Red Hat cruise and one day we did have a 'pajama breakfast'....most wore robe too but some didn't.... but we were in a special section of the dining room. Under 'normal' circumstances I don't think a person should wear pajamas to the dining room. If you don't want to get dressed, order breakfast brought to your room
We’re sailing to the Southern Caribbean with Celebrity in December. The information provided explicitly states that no camouflage clothing or other items are permitted to two ports: Dominica and Barbados. I don’t wear camo so it’s not an issue for me. All cruisers, especially new ones, should be diligent in reading and researching the cruise and ports. I think it may be a sign of some people, not all by any means, who want everything catered to them. We see it on airlines, in movie theaters, and elsewhere: a lack of understanding that public spaces as well as foreign places have their own rules and norms. As you’ve said well, a ship is not your home and the dining areas are not your kitchen. And Barbados is not your backyard. Thanks for reviewing these principles, Ilana.
We are sailing on Silhouette on 12/4. We read the rules too and since we are ADULTS, we will respect those rules. Some people have never heard the word “no” their entire life. And their behavior reflects it.
No pajamas in any venue on the ship! If you want to eat breakfast in your jammies, order room service. I also don’t want to see your butt cheeks hanging out of your bathing suit bottom while I’m behind you in the buffet line. Most passengers are pleasant to be around. But there are always a few who think the rules don’t apply to them. I would hope that the ship’s crew would remind them that their behavior is unacceptable and suggest a quick trip to their cabin to change their attire. I’ve known about the camouflage clothing laws in the Caribbean since we started cruising in 2004. The cruise line should probably put a large sign up at the gangway though. Or have crew members on watch for passengers wearing camo departing the ship in those counties that forbid it and tell them to change clothes. Why risk a passenger getting detained or arrested?
The cruise lines don't explain why but its because Camo is considered military/police wear in the DR.
It’s good to avoid camo when traveling internationally. It is actually outlawed in many countries.
Sooo true.
I can't believe anyone would wake up and think it's ok to go to a restaurant in your jammies. Put your clothes on! Our culture has gone crazy! 😂
To be fair, what some people consider PJs others consider workout clothes.
Not saying I disagree with you, but have you been to any restaurants lately? Or anywhere in public lately? People wear pajamas all the time 😖
Its not really so crazy in the whole spectrum of crazy.
LOL!!! Right?!!!
Yes the self respect and respect for others has faded some
I had no idea about the camo! Also, in our last cruise I saw so many people wearing ball caps in the dining room at dinner. I was very surprised.
Great info. I hope the cruise lines keep their standards on the dress codes, let’s keep some class.
I knew about the no camouflage clothing, and I agree that people need to follow the rules of the countries/sites they visit.
It's customary for gentlemen to remove their hats indoors (including main dining rooms). Ladies are exempt because of "hat hair". On Navy ships, it was standard practice for the dining areas (wardroom/mess decks) to be used as impromptu hospital wards during battle, and hats were removed out of respect for the dead and dying.
Thanks for sharing
Agree, but there are so few actual gentlemen nowadays. I still cringe seeing men wear baseball caps at restaurants.
@j.m.7056 you got that right! Thank you!
I struggle with the hat thing. Women wear sunhats and visors for a reason on a cruise ship. Men wear ball caps for the same reasons. Sunshine and hat hair. I think at lunch in the cafeteria a cap is ok. I always struggle with rules that are different for men and women.
@@j.m.7056 I agree. I did have a conversation, decades ago, with a male cousin. He was wearing his hat (greek fisherman flat cap) in our lunch restaurant. He pointed out that there were no longer any hat racks, as there had been when we were children, where was he supposed to put it. We discussed the face that women manage to hold on to their handbags. But he did have a point.
I already know about Cammo restrictions. As for hats, I was taught from an early age, to remove your cap when eating, anytime you're inside as a matter of fact. But that has lessened over the years, but at dinner? Definitely take it off.
I am hyper-light sensitive, and hats are often necessary to wear even indoors. I generally don't wear baseball caps or trucker hats, but something with a large brim. I think our society is too judgmental about things and just because they are not light-sensitive and don't need hats indoors ever, nobody does! #actuallyautisticADHD I don't know why anyone would want to go to breakfast in their PJs or robe, but would I get offended if someone did... Nah!
Yes, there have been announcements on a few cruises not to wear Camo (I didn't hear about water bottles!) and on one cruise announced there could be snipers looking for (not necessarily Americans) anyone who wore camo could be a target. One funny story... My husband and I were doing a Meditarian Cruise not far after the war in Iraq started and sentiments in Europe running high against President Bush. So, while my husband was in the bathroom getting ready to get off the ship, the cruise ship announced "Maybe you don't want to look too American or Touristy" And just then, my husband walked out of the bathroom wearing an eBay T-shirt, a cap with an American flag on it and camera hanging around his neck! I laughed so hard!!! And, NO, he didn't change a thing and we had a wonderful time being tourists.
When you leave your cabin, you should be fully dressed no matter where you’re going.
Totally against pjs in the dining areas. These are restaurants and it is expected that each person have appropriate clothing and footwear. I was very disappointed with Royal during my last cruise as there were people in the MDR in the evening that looked like they had just walked off the beach and into the dining room.
The cammo rule is not new and I first learned about if from Carnival. Also there are clearly stated dress expectations on all cruise ships at each venue. When planning clothing to wear both on and off ship, cruisers should be more concerned about the basic standards of the host location than their personal freedoms they enjoy when at home. Remember that though you are a potential customer of wares and services, you are ultimately a guest at the host's discretion. Disregarding those expectations never goes well.
Your videos are literally the reason I’m trying out my first cruise in April! ❤️
No pajamas! They belong in your cabin! Hope everyone takes these tips in the spirit they were meant. This is great information! Thanks Ilana! Folks, do your homework before you travel!
I continue to be befuddled by people who have the mindset, that they can dress down to the pount of being vulgar. When I cruise, I always have very tasteful clothes for going on tours, and look forward to looking my best in a suit and tie for dinner in the main dining room, wether it be formal night or not. There are just some who do 't take the pomp and circumstance of a cruise, seriously
I agree. The thing with pajamas is that either you’re naked under them or are wearing dirty underpants that you slept in. You don’t take a shower and then put your pj’s back on. I don’t want to smell someone like that next to me. Yuck!
Pjs shouldn’t be allowed in stores or the airport!
@@rallegra Totally agree! It just ruins the ambiance of the ship. You want to see vacationers who are chillin' in nice clothes.
Absolutely NO!!! PJ’s and bath robes, belong in the bedroom, swimsuits should be on the Lido Deck, and with a coverup while walking down the hallways to get to/ from the pool or spa area. Also hats should be removed in the dining room or at any indoor eating venue. Actually, they should be removed when you come into a interior room. I’ve known the camo is not allowed in many countries, since I started cruising in 1996. The security at the exit points of the ship should have said something to the wearer, as a final check, but ultimately it’s the cruisers responsibility to know the customs of the countries visited. Rules are rules, follow them!
Bless their hearts! Some people have not been brought up to know the customs of their culture. They have enough money to afford a cruise, but not the education to know how to dress or behave, either aboard the ship and when visiting a different culture. Class has little to do with income level.
No PJ's in dinning areas...or walmart!! Lots of good common since and tips. Thanks
The rule about no camouflage clothing is not a new one - it’s been prohibited in certain Caribbean countries for decades and The cruise lines have always been very up front about this and other items that are prohibited. Passengers need to read their contracts and rules/regulations.
In Canada it's sometimes not recommended to wear Camouflage to the gun range, Unless you are in Uniform. It's not hard and fast rule but can be frowned upon.
I remember when we were sailing into Grenada, the ship captain announced that no one could wear any type of camouflage clothing, not even a hat. They were actually checking every ones clothing before disembarking at the port.
Interesting, I had no idea about the rules regarding camouflage, not that I regularly wear such. But speaking of pj’s and robes at breakfast- I really could not care any less in fact it would be an improvement in many cases.
Everything was perfect the sound the view . Love the blue water the sky together it is amazing fantastic 👏👏🥰❤️💐💐💐😀
I have always been aware that camouflage clothing is actually illegal in some ports. I think that most cruise companies do a good job of putting that information out there. I’m afraid people just don’t look at the fine print, or space out during the “boring parts” of instructions.
Well, I guess they shouldn't make boring presentations. I'd bet every guy would know the rule if they had bikini clad women come out and across their stomachs lined up said Do Not Wear Camo in port. SOmehow, I feel like this is a rule broken by guys more often than by females.
Great information Ilana. I had heard about not wearing camo clothing in some Caribbean ports.
Wearing your PJs and robe to breakfast seems very out of place to me. If you want to be that casual then hsve breakfast in your cabin or on your balcony. Other passengers don't necessarily want to see people in their PJs while eating. Same goes for hats. I love hats and clear them a lot but NEVER when I am sitting down to eat a nice meal. My mom would haunt me even from heaven if I tried to wear a hat to a restaurant.
Enjoy your cruise and especially the Canal!
Yes! When I know I'm not going to be up for dressing before breakfast, I will opt for room service...if it's available. I'm one who will see grown men & women wearing what looks like sleep wear...at the grocery store, at an airport, etc...and unless there is an emergency, seems like disrespect for everyone, including themselves. The US has gotten too informal to the pint that even adults don't know that this is not normal for almost anywhere in the world. It's shameful. In general, we have more & better clothing than just about anywhere, but they leave those clothes in the closet & embarrass themselves in public. It only takes two minutes to throw on some jeans and a T.
@@rossream1098I know. I ride a public bus to work and some days I'm literally nauseated by certain people. Same for the airports. I've worked on a college campus for years and lived through that trend of wearing PJs to class in spite of an actual dress code, and a lot of spoiled kids were upset that professors were telling them not to show up like that or even making them leave the room. Fortunately that seems to have passed.
That camo story, others on the ship have said there had been several announcements about not wearing camo.
It has never even crossed my mind to wear my pajamas outside of my stateroom! That would be like me going to breakfast out at a restaurant at home in my jammies, people would be looking at me at the restaurant like I’m crazy! 😳
This is just something you don’t do! 🤦♀️
In Italy I brought a long skirt that my 16 year old daughter could pull over her shorts and we both had shrugs to cover our shoulders! Not too terrible to carry and easy to put on before entering churches.
why someone would think that it is okay to go in a house of worship with their body parts exposed amazes me!
The camouflage clothing is well known to be forbidden in many Caribbean islands.
I wasn't aware of this rule.
I wasn't either....don't wear it but good to know
And the camo code is written in the newsletter and announced several times over the PA system.
@@jacquimg2469 must be only on Caribbean cruises.
I didn’t know about the cami rule, but I’m glad to have learned it.
I knew about the camo because I read it on the Holland America site. If you want to have breakfast in your pajamas, get room service. When people are eating in public areas, they don’t want to see your body parts no matter how wonderful you think they are. while I don’t endorse dressing up and being uncomfortable because after all, we are on vacation, there still has to be some type of civility in public places. Your videos are awesome and very informative. I have learned a lot. Thank you for sharing.
I'm going on HAL Noordam in a few weeks. I have read that they're spotlighting cakes this season. The first time on a cruise ever and your tips are invaluable. Happy sailing.
It would be nice if people used common sense and good manners.
Yes! Sadly, both seem in short supply here in North America.
Let's use some sort of decorum people!
You are asking a man that puts on women's clothing and thinks he is a she to have common sense ?
“There is nothing common about sense. “
And for many people, if not for bad manners, they wouldn’t have any.
Put on your PJ's 'cause you're dreaming. (Except outside your cabin)
I've known about camo colored anything restrictions for years. Most of my cruise ships have told us over the PA system before disembarking to the islands where it applies.
I love that there are rules that should be adhered to❤
I am an avid Carnival cruiser, Diamond level, and have only heard of the camouflage clothing about a year ago . Camo wear is linked to “terrorist & rebels “ activity as we were told by our cabin stewards one day. I had camouflage briefs in my laundry and told not to wear them on our island stops.
NO pajamas, swim wear or other semi clothing at the buffets!!
People who wear pajamas to the breakfast buffet should order room service and have breakfast in their room. No one wants to see anyone else in their pajamas.
Now that is a lie. If a hot woman walks into the Buffet in skimpy Pjs or Lingerie most of the guys would want to see that. Plus so what if someone wears their fluffy snoopy PJs to breakfast, it's breakfast not a 7 course meal. People need to stop being so snobby.
I had to wear pajamas in public after major surgery and I felt a little self conscious about it. But I do see the appeal because they’re comfortable. However, they have a place and most of us call it Walmart, not a breakfast buffet. Have a little class, and self esteem, and get dressed before you leave your cabin. You don’t have to put on makeup or fix your hair, just put on appropriate clothing. And for pete’s sake leave the silk sleep cap in your cabin where it belongs!
In some places (for example, gipsies from Spain) there is a tradition of using pijamas for going to places that are very near (bakery, supermarket, fruit shop, etc).
Also, many people don't care about what other people are wearing.
I agree. Room service is a great option if you aren’t ready to put on clothes. 😊
I really appreciate how you approached this subject. I was on a Carnival Cruise last week and saw someone with a bathrobe on and someone with pajamas on in the buffet area. I could not believe people would go so far as to wear these items outside of their stateroom. I also saw several people with camouflage on. Carnival clearly states in their contract that camouflage is not to be worn, especially at ports of call. The only reason I know this is because I took a break during 2019-2021, so when I was ready to cruise again I read the contract to make sure I knew the rules and would be in compliance and not be turned around before getting on the ship.
Ships should post dress codes at the entrances to restaurants. That should include no sleepwear and no swimwear. Posting requirements should make it easier to enforce.
I knew about this rule. Cruisers need to be aware of cultural circumstances in other countries. You can wear whatever you want in your home but you should be considerate of other passengers on the ship and come dressed for breakfast. If you want to eat in your pajamas, then order room service.
and visiting another country without studying local culture and expecting it to be like the good ole US is why people in other countries don't really care for US tourists and in today's world, with the Internet at your fingertips, there is no excuse for not knowing.
I remember being told by Carnival Cruises a few years ago that no camouflage anything was allowed in certain ports. This was in the Caribbean and they would stop you before you got off the ship if you had any camouflage.
That’s so interesting about the camo. I’m sure that kind of thing happens a lot bc you wouldn’t even think smth like that would be illegal
Pyjamas to breakfast - No, get dressed or eat in your cabin
Hats at the dinner table - No, bad manners as long as I can remember
Swimwear into the buffet- no. Cover up, it is a restaurant. Also dangerous to come inside dripping wet
Cover up bare shoulders etc - yes. You are in a foreign country and must obey by their cultural/ religious ways. Be respectful
Wearing cammo- I have never been to Caribbean so not been affected. Cruise lines should warn passengers what not to wear. I have been to Brunei and we are told to cover up and wear hair covering for certain places. Respect the country you are visiting.
Manners are really appreciated on a cruise. Camo in various countries is considered part of their military uniform. Respect the customs and rules of other countries. PJs don’t belong in a dining room. What may be fine at Walmart has no place on board in a ship’s dining room or buffet.
And it’s not really ok at Walmart either
I personally don’t want to see people in their sleep wear in the dining room. If you want to eat in your sleep wear eat in your cabin.
Just arrived back on Nov. 12th from a 10 day on the Rotterdam and it was a very pleasant 10 days ! Holland America as usual is always a great way to relax. We never go to the main dining room any longer as its a drawn out affair of at least 2 hours and we really enjoy the great variety on the Lido deck. As far as clothing, I have seen people walk through the lido wearing a robe or covered with sheer clothing over bathing suits but not sitting and eating. I would hope one would have enough class to wear appropriate clothing anytime they are in a dinging area, but there always may be one that doesn't. LOL Heading back out on Holland America in Dec for a 10 day and look forward to being onboard for Christmas. Have a great rest of your cruise and live it up !!
When cruising in the Caribbean the cruise ship posted in its newsletter a warning that camo clothing was not allowed in certain ports. The crew working at the exits also told people to go back and change.
Hunni, i have said this numerous times on your page (crazy4dariver or just River)
Camouflage is bad anywhere. The US and Canada has several color combinations. DO NOT BRING IT!
On island, you can be arrested. In some ports, imprisoned. There is no reason to bring it.
1. Should dress for buffet and dining rooms same as you would at home - no robes, no pajamas, no bathing suits only. 2. Would be nice if cruise ships noted any type of restrictions (including clothing) for their ports of call.
Good point
No robes or pajamas for breakfast at home? Why not? I mean in a cruise ship dining room definitely not, but at home I would definitely eat breakfast in my pjs and/or robe.
We were told very specifically several times about the camouflage on our trip to the Bahamas and I have talked to several people who have sailed with various cruise lines and they've all said the same thing. People are of the 'don't tell me what to do' mentality.
@@barbiegal7227absolutely right. No pjs or robes on cruise dining, but at home I do most of the time unless I have company or am expecting someone. The robes aren't that bad just look disrespectful to others. But pjs - NO.
There are exceptions to all rules. On DCL, our FB group arranged a PJ breakfast (set up thru the cruise line in advance). Similarly there was recently a "onsie brunch" on Virgin started by a FB group. This went over so well that it might be an activity adopted by the cruise line. Since it was a Halloween cruise, we chose "onesies" as our costume, so got double duty out of them.
Thank you on the fifth. Didn’t know that. No sleep ware out of the cabin.
Never given a thought about a baseball style cap, or military cap would draw side glances in a ship restaurant. Good information as I'm about to go on my first cruise.
Every time I've been on a Caribbean cruise, the warning on Camouflage clothing has been broadcast well by the cruise lines I've been on, including Carnival.
My sister was denied entry into St. Mark’s in Venice for not having her arms covered, so in the Vatican she wore her dress that had sleeves. But it was above her knees and she couldn’t get in. That was a year when there was an article about a Vatican nun entry ‘guard’ who suffered from exhaustion from her job keeping such offenders out !
When you are a guest in someone's country, home, or place of worship, know the local rules/customs and follow them. "Nuff said.
Fancy, frilly, lacy sleepwear is *always* welcome any time of the day. An eyeful is always appropriate!
New to cruising, but I see a Cruise ship as a giant hotel on the ocean. And I would ABSOLUTLY go to breakfast at a hotel in my PJs if I wanted to.
I personally have not experienced this but I agree absolutely no PJs in any restaurants on a cruise ship. If you don’t want to get dressed then order room service.
Hi Ileana. I just sailed the HAL Rotterdam on a Panama Canal cruise in late October and I loved it. Pajamas and robes absolutely do not belong in the dining room or in the buffet.
I wore a full white robe to the theater on a Holland America ship 5 years ago after coming down from the lido but I never thought to wear one to a meal.
I agree, no pjs outside of your cabin or anywhere outside.
I’ve known about not wearing any camouflage clothing in a lot of Caribbean ports. Every cruise I’ve taken, it’s been published on the daily cruise planner and has also been announced by the crew.
Also taking photos of airports and all security installations is frowned on
I think it's up to the traveller to look at the rules for any destination they go to. Whenever we travel to a place we haven't been I always do extensive research since there are some rules/ laws that will seem strange to North Americans but clearly are in place for a reason.
Thank you for everything you do and for all the great advice. I’ve only been on one, so far, a Disney eastbound transatlantic last May. I’m told that I’ve ruined all other experiences because no other cruise line is as good. I’m a bit concerned because we’re doing another transatlantic this May, on Princess. Any advice?
I just wanted to thank you and add that Italy, in general, is very strict about attire in religious buildings. I had spent some time there, I’m also Catholic, so I was prepared but I did see some tourists turned away. Thank you again 🥰
Goodness. It should be common nature to be polite to others by not just rolling out of bed and showing up in your pajamas. Respecting your fellow passengers.
My sweet Mom always told my brothers and my husband, “no hats inside, boys. Take them off.”
Ilana, this is a great video with great tips. We need to research where we are going to assess culture and the like. Sometimes on vacations, it’s easy to forget to be sure to remember and respect the culture.
Regarding breakfast in pajamas in public on the ship? No.
My brain says, “Why? Isn’t coffee with pastries complimentary? Why the need to just roll down to the MDR in your PJs with no respect to the people who make your food and cook it for you? For that matter, do you tip your steward and the staff that brings food to your room when you order everything on the menu?”
I know this isn’t a nice comment. The ships and their staff work so hard to make a sailing a great experience for everyone on board.
Showing up in the MDR in pajamas is so disrespectful to me. Don’t care how much a person pays for a cruise.
Be respectful to the crew and fellow passengers. Nobody wants to see you in your pajamas except your self for selfies or your partner for other things.
You should be dressed appropriately when accessing any of the dining areas as well as taking a stroll on the deck.
I agree! Not only dressed appropriately but hair combed. I remember as a kid, my dad wouldn't let us sit at the breakfast table until we were dressed and out hair combed! We are 60 days away from leaving for our first cruise. Have learned so much about cruising from these videos. 🌞
My husband & I were on a cruise about 3 years ago and where was one woman who wore her pajamas, robe & slippers every day in the buffet areas and Lido Deck. Not only in the morning, but throughout the day. I thought the cruise staff would say something to her about how inappropriate it was. If they did, she certainly didn’t care-as she continued through the entire 6 days. It’s a strong “no” for me!
As much as I love pj’s, I think it’s inappropriate to wear them outside of your cabin.
I haven’t been on many cruises and even I knew about the camo clothing law. I really think a crew member should have stopped them as they left the ship.
I agree with all of your points.
No! This isn't like you're at home! If what you're wearing is see through then that would be inappropriate as you are actually naked because everyone will see everything! For over the last year and a half everyone has said not to wear camo because it's part of the military uniform more so in the Caribbean! I think that even travel agents should mention it at the time of booking a cruise. If you're able to do your own booking then there should be a box to check to show that you knew about this!
I think you hade it right when you said if you wouldn't wear something to a restaurant, you shouldn't wear it to a ship restaurant. It's a public place. The hat thing baffles me. We were taught in first grade that men are to remove their hats indoors. That said, if it's worn for a religious or medical reason, it's a different thing. It just makes it a little nicer for everybody when we all respect one another a little bit.
Yup, I knew about the camo ban. I think the cruises have it posted somewhere. And, I always research where I'm going. I don't assune that the workd caters to me. 😊
It would never have occurred to me about the camouflage clothing though I have never known that.
