    A few years ago, my job hosted a Halloween trick or treat for local kids. There was a little girl dressed as a Rockford Peach. I remember squealing with delight. Hands down my favorite costume. Afterward, her mom thanked me because it was her daughter’s favorite movie but most people at the event didn’t know her costume. My reaction made that little girl’s night.

      I love ❤️ this inspiring movie. All the actors played their parts so well. I took my two daughters to watch this when they were small. They played ball for seven years. It’s rough on girls too who get hurt and my youngest was so fast at stealing bases. Now they’re grown women. So this is nostalgic for me. Loved 🥰 your REVIEW. Thank you 🙏🏽 pretty lady.

    Director Penny Marshall insisted all the actresses really know how to play ball...no faking it. She even had Rosie O'Donnell teach Madonna (and they became lifelong friends)
    This was a great role for Madonna and smart casting. I never watch sports movies but she was the only reason I went to see it. Probably a lot of movie tickets sold to Madonna fans like me who maybe wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

    One of the best moments in this movie is when the black lady catches the baseball and just nods. This is before Jackie Robinson became the first black baseball player. Baseball during the war was a whites only sport. I mean, look at how they treated the women. Etiquette and beauty courses, and those ridiculous skirts. Nobody expected women’s baseball to take off at all, but it did, and they still tried to shut it down. They thought it would basically be the equivalent of a more sanitized burlesque show. Little did they know. This is in my view one of the best chick flicks of all time.

      I'm in the same boat...my Nana passed away 2 weeks ago at age 94 and she was my best friend other then my momma who passed away at age 65 in 2019...I lost two the most important women in my life and me and my Nana would watch movies together and soap operas, Touched By Angel series, and we would talk about the storylines and laugh, get mad, cry and have a ball together.
      It's been so ruff for me...I internalize my grief and just workout a lot and run a lot, it's like my therapy.
      The sad part was my Grandma suffered from dementia and in the last two years she couldn't remember me, until I talked to her for a while and reminded her about me...but it wasn't dementia that took her from us it was a car accident...her fragile body couldn't take the impact plus she had dementia and she was 94...almost all her bones were broken and she passed away in the hospital peacefully in her sleep.
      This movie always reminds me of her because we have watched it together before and she loved it.
      So I know your pain sweetheart.
      Sending my love and condolences your way and keep your head...just know she will always be with you and she will never leave you...she is at peace full of love and tranquility...she in her next journey into the afterlife...her soul, spirit, energy continues after this life...I feel my mom and Nana with me all the time and I even heard their voices separately wake me up in the morning's...I would wake up startled and look around and ask my dad if he called me...he said No🙊
      And I recognized my Nana's voice and my mom voice the next day.
      So I know they are sending me signs because I'm grieving so much.
      God bless you🙏

    One of the things I super appreciate about this movie is the casting job they did for the older versions of the characters. You recognize them immediately. They did such a great job with that. They could have tried to use old age makeup, but it would not have been nearly as effective. (And this is coming from a professional effects makeup artist! We do our best, and there have been many terrific aging makeups done in film. But for this one, they made the absolute right choice.). The casting was just so spot-on; all of those "mature" versions of the characters were absolutely great. Really brought the whole thing home. (pun absolutely intended!)

    While I completely understand the frustration with Kit, I've softened towards her in my recent viewings. Feelings of inferiority are TOUGH to beat, and they didn't come out of nowhere. Based on the way a man in the crowd at the beginning treated her and what she said about her dad, it's clear that other people are constantly comparing her to Dottie and that she's basically a non-entity without her sister, so she started comparing herself, too. Then they get into the league and she's STILL being referred to as Dottie's kid sister that was only allowed in because they wanted Dottie, therefore discrediting the fact that she DID get on the team herself. There's also the fact that Dottie is talented without really trying and doesn't really even care, and I can definitely understand why that's infuriating whenever you work so hard just to get decent at the thing you love. And with the closing hug when Dottie tells her "I love you," it genuinely shocks her. Sounds like the girl just didn't get told "I love you" enough.
    I definitely think they could've done better writing her character by giving her something outside of her inferiority complex. There weren't enough genuinely sweet sister moments before the end. There was a LOT of bending over backwards on Dottie's end that Kit should've held herself accountable for. She should've caught the ball her sister hit right back at her instead of dropping to the ground and had a moment of "Oh my gosh, I got my sister out" and that could've been a private little win and confidence boost without giving us an ending that leaves everyone debating if Dottie dropped the ball on purpose or not. And since Dottie's said from the beginning to lay off the high ones, she should've laid off the high ones at the end, which would've been HUGE character growth.

    • @whitneygregg5805
      @whitneygregg5805 Před rokem +13

      I feel like she did have character growth in the end though, because she didn’t lay off the high ones and actually hit it. One of the many reasons I feel like Dottie didn’t drop the ballon purpose. In the end, Kit snapped out of her inferiority mindset. I feel like once she realized what Dottie told Ellen Sue about the high ones, her face and attitude changed to “alright, let’s go” and she hit it, booked it, and slammed it into a win. Dottie even said Kit wanted it more than her. Dottie in the beginning of the movie even told her oldest grandson, “give him a chance” but she didn’t say “let him win”. Dottie gave Kit a chance by getting on that train, but Dottie never held back in the last game.
      But I think what you said about Kit being surprised by Dottie telling her she loved her is so true. When you’ve been raised to be invisible and/or compared to the golden child in your family, you never feel loved and don’t know how to react when someone does say they love you. But you also beat yourself up so much you feel like nothing you do is good enough. And I think Kit felt all those things HARD.

    • @SummersMovingBookshelf
      @SummersMovingBookshelf Před rokem +8

      @@whitneygregg5805 I guess I just think the better character growth would’ve been for her to listen to the coaching she was receiving, because it wasn’t just Dottie telling her to lay off the high ones, her coach told her, too. She was being told to stop at third base, too, but kept going. I guess I’m speaking from the lens of a softball player, so to see someone blatantly ignore all coaching is irritating, so her listening would’ve been more satisfying to me.

    I felt the same way you did about Kit the first time I watched the movie. Through time I’ve come to really empathize with her. I feel that the reason she acted the way she did was because she felt like the only reason she was in the league was because of Dottie and she took it out on Dottie instead of realizing she was good enough on her own. At the end of the day, they seem to have realized their love outweighed any competition between them. Sad it took them so long to realize it.

I have empathy for how she feels, because it’s extremely hard to constantly feel inferior to someone and to feel like you have nothing “special” or that’s “your thing” and place to shine. That’s ultimately not the fault of her older sister though who wasn’t setting out to harm her sister or make her feel inferior; but her own insecurities.

      Maybe Kit has been in Dottie's presence for too long? Kit needs somebody else to be compared to, somebody to serve as different example of a ball player. Kit needs a larger "sample size" to see more precisely where she fits in the larger spectrum of the female players.

  • @SuburbanSavage
    @SuburbanSavage Před rokem +33

    In Kit's defense, having TWO older sisters who were beautiful, popular, athletic, etc., is a pain in the butt. On my first day of high school, I walked into the building, only to be greeted by 2 giant portraits of them, even though they had graduated almost a decade prior. Every single teacher's eyes would bug out when calling my name, only for them to say, "are you really related to Sophia & Elizabeth?" Adults really have no problem in openly pointing out how you fail in comparison to your sibling, in their eyes anyway. I was not good at high school sports, but I had skipped 2 grades, so I was clearly good at academics! Years of that can really mess with your confidence. Luckily I transferred schools, but even as an adult, it still comes up occasionally. Years ago, I went to Sophia's house to feed her dog as her family were away for the weekend, and her neighbor called the cops, claiming that it was a break-in. It took hours for the police to believe that I was an actual blood relation to my own sibling. One of them actually said to me, "what happened to you?" Gross!
    Even though it doesn't bother me anymore, it can still annoy me to have hear it from people who don't even know me. I am perpetually known in my hometown as, "The Other One," which I kind of like.
    (Side note: My dad named us after actresses that we looked like, so Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rosalind Russell. Those two look like their namesakes, while I definitely do not, which is fine and also funny!)

    Most of the women in this League posted statistics comparable to the male players, and some posted statistics that were better than male players. A good example was Jean Faut, who pitched for the South Bend Blue Sox.
    Jean Faut compiled a lifetime record of 140-64, with a 1.23 earned run average in 235 pitching appearances. This ERA marks her as one of the greatest pitchers in the sport, male or female. She also accomplished something that no other pitcher in the history of the game did: she pitched two perfect games. No male pitcher ever managed that. Ever. She also pitched two no-hitters, and led her league in strikeouts three years in a row and set a single-season win percentage at .909, which again is better than most male pitchers.
    The fact that these women are not in the Baseball Hall of Fame on their own merits is a crime.

    I was the oldest child in a broken family. My mother had emotional issues; still does. She married 5 times, had 3 children by her first 3 husbands.
    My brother hated me. I loved and was concerned for him. I was intellectually-gifted (I'm now a Mensa member); he was dyslexic, had lazy eye (legally-blind in one eye), left-handed and had red/green colorblindness. He dropped out of school, later tried to get his GED, was working toward his life goal of joining the US Coast Guard, then found out having only one good eye disqualified him. Added to that was our birthdays being 3 years and one week apart; our birthdays were celebrated together, meaning we had no personal celebration. And me being female and he being male in a chauvinistic society meant the competition between us was fierce and solely powered by his resentment.
    He passed away at 26, shot in the neck one drunken night during a brawl that included an intoxicated cop who had brought along his service revolver. The shooting was only a mile from the hospital, but he bled to death before he could be transported there. His girlfriend miscarried from the shock of losing him.
    I still remember the first thing that ran through my mind when I heard he had died: "Arguments are stupid".

    Ah, sibling rivalry. I've been introduced my whole life as my older brother's little sister. Never as a daughter, only as their son's sister, for nearly 70 years. It messes with your head, how you value yourself or not.

    Something I've picked up with Dottie, is she talks a lot about how she doesn't care about this stuff, but she's obviously very competitive, and imo with Kit in particular. That has to be intensely disheartening. In more recent viewings she does genuinely hit me as a person who wants Kit to be better, but not as good as her. As a younger sibling who struggled academically, with an older brother who did very well, it's intensely disheartening. And I didn't even have it as bad as Kit (I had a few talents of my own that were better.) It just hurts.
    I think it's also fair to assume that Dottie was like that even when they were little kids, when the age difference would actually make a notable difference in skill level. It's important to remember at the start, she advised her grandson to give his little brother a chance sometime, seemingly something she learned after ending up with such a distant relationship with her own little sister, who she never went easy on. Dottie is good at everything except for this. Kit felt like she was in Dottie's shadow for her whole life, until she made it on her own, and this is something that-probably unintentionally, but due to her own pride-Dottie directly contributed to. I liked them both when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, I've found myself feeling a lot of pity for Kit, and not much sympathy toward Dottie.
    Where I think this movie fails, is not giving us enough about the history between the two sisters, so we can get a better, deeper sense of their relationship. Dottie is right to give it her all on a professional level, but I feel like if she had treated Kit differently in the years leading up to the events in this movie, there probably wouldn't have been much, if any, issue between the two of them.

    1) I graduated HS in 1974. Up until 1970 girls could only play half-court basketball because it was thought that full-court meant that all that running would make our baby-making insides get messed up.
    2) The actress who played Marla Hooch did all of her own batting. She was a powerhouse
    3) A friend's mother was a Racine Belle and she loved this movie. She said that it got "Hollywooded up" but really captured the spirit of the League and the women who played.

    Good to see you again!❤. You would love "Hidden Figures". It's based on a true story about 3 brilliant African American women who worked for NASA in the late 50's-early 60's. It's one of my favorite movies ever ❤❤ BTW, the economy actually flourished during WW2 when women took over jobs traditionally held by men. Once the war was over, women got sent back home to crank out babies and be home makers. Post WW2 productivity took a huge nose dive after that. The artist Norman Rockwell did a famous painting called "Rosie the Riviter" honoring these amazing women who kept our country running while working, taking care of and feeding the kids plus growing victory gardens and canning every scrap of vegetables they could.. America was hungry and women fed them ❤

    I have watched this reaction twice already, I am a glutton for tears, laughter and your commentary to these reviews! I do have siblings, no sisters but I didn't have the same relationship like Dottie and Kit with my siblings. I think the question everyone keeps talking about after so many years later is whether or not Dottie dropped the ball because in the end it keeps people talking about it. I say yes, she dropped the ball on purpose because to me that action comes back to the beginning of the movie for me when Dottie as a grandmother, she told her eldest grandson "Now remember, no matter what your brother does, he littler than you are. So, give him a chance to shoot." Then she tells her youngest grandson, "Kill him" In my opinion it looks like she gave Kit a chance to shine. It also looks like an accident, that she didn't drop the ball on purpose! Did the writers want us to believe it was on purpose? Did they give us a choice? I think they did. Like art, movies are open to interpretation, and I think both of our interpretations satisfies the viewer. That's just me. I enjoyed this reaction again and again! Tissues and all! ☮💕👏

    I really enjoyed seeing your reaction to some of the cultural elements of baseball: superstitious thinking, players working through injuries and struggles, and managers screaming at you about a mistake you made. On that last topic, you looked so shocked to see Tom Hanks yelling at her for crying. Or am I wrong to characterize your reaction as shock? Baseball can be a very emotional game, but there's also a lot of bluster, flared tempers, and grudges held between teams.
