Conclusion for importing a car: -If the value of the (new) vehicle would be, for example, valued at $65.000,-USD, importing it with Jubilado/Retiree Visa Tax Exemption would most definitely save you money. Without the tax exemption that same vehicle with Import duties (approx. 35%), Destination Port charges, & registering the vehicle in Panama would be very close or a bit over $100.000,-USD. Importing a luxury vehicle alone with a Jubilado/Retiree Visa Tax Exemption would justify the cost of shipping it in a container.
Jubilado Visa residents are allowed to import a vehicle to Panama once every 2 years without the requirement to pay the import tax of 30%, confirmed by a Panamanian Immigration Lawyer.
Panama has a "Free Trade Treaty" with South-Korea, meaning that the price of brand new vehicles like Hyundai and Kia, are almost identical compared to the prices in the U.S. Importing these vehicles yourself would make very little, or no sense.
Prices of used/pre-owned vehicles are substantially higher in Panama compared to the U.S. and one simply has to do the numbers to figure out whether importing a used vehicle would be beneficial. If a vehicle is low miles in pristine condition, it could be a smart move combined with your personal items/household goods?
