  • Samurai are very famous around the world.
You too might be a fan of their history and culture, just like I am.
However as you study about samurai, you will most certainly come across “Bushi-do.”
Bushi-do is the moral code of the samurai; the way of how warriors in Japan should act.
“Do” means path or way in Japanese, so that makes sense.
But what is “bushi”? Is it the same meaning as samurai?
Then why didn’t it call it “Samurai-do”?
Today, as a katana sword trainee studying samurai history and culture, I will explain the difference between samurai and bushi.
At the end of this video, I will also talk a little about other terms related to samurai such as mononofu, musha, bushō, and daimyō!

Hey, Shogo. I love your content. It's always very well-organized and easy to understand. It's obvious you put a lot of thought into how to present the information. One suggestion I have is to use the Japanese pronunciations for words that have been loaned to English, like "samurai", "karate", or "karaoke". There is no reason why English (and other non-Japanese) speakers cannot learn to say these words properly. I think the reason it is pronounced incorrectly is mostly because people have not been exposed to the proper pronunciation, which is definitely something your videos can do. If needed, you can always insert a line that mentions both two pronunciations and contrasts them.

Yes! By complete coincidence, the English word "knight" and the Japanese word "samurai" literally mean the same thing! "one who serves". This literal translation is unique to English (and sometimes German) as knights in other European countries were called something else that meant something different (usually "horseman" or "horse warrior" or something along those lines).

To add, from what I gathered, the speaker can determine what sounds are associated with kanji (×××Holic's "Watanuki" written as "April 1st" comes to mind): is that the case; and again, what is the grammatical rules behind it?
