The Raising of Jairus’s Daughter: Summary and Meaning

The story of the miraculous healing of Jairus’s daughter appears in all three Synoptic gospels, but not the Gospel of John. The story is a significant example of the “Markan Sandwich” of a healing miracle story within a story.
Summary of the Raising of Jairus’s Daughter Story
1. A synagogue official named Jairus begs Jesus to heal his daughter.
2. Jesus went with Jairus, but a woman suffering from hemorrhaging touched Jesus’s cloak to be healed.
3. Jesus sent her away healed by her faith, but he was too late to heal Jairus’s daughter.
4. Jesus arrived at the official’s house to find people crying.
5. With the words “Talitha koum” he raised the girl from the dead.
The Meaning of the Story
Here are some possible reflections based on the story:
1. Turn with faith to the Lord. Both Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman approached Jesus in faith and hope in his healing power. It was their faith that got his attention and led to the miracles.
2. Rely on faith when others mourn. With tears and doubt, the crowd mourned the loss of Jairus’s daughter, but God’s power was greater than this. Faith saved her.
3. Talitha koum means “Little girl, I say to you arise!” according to the text. This is foreshadowing our future. We will rise at the Lord’s command.
