Imagine you’re a center back, and you play an entire season without getting dribbled/juked, an ENTIRE SEASON, and you still lose the ballon d’or race. The thing is ballon d’or is heavily biased to goals and assists especially in the newer seasons, because goals and assists are flashy, while just as important skills like passing, situational awareness, defending, goalkeeping, etc. are not so flashy. Why do you think only 1 goalkeeper has won the ballon d’or, only a handful defenders have won it. Hell, Maldini with all of his achievements and innovations to the game didn’t win a ballon d’or. Only one CDM has won a ballon d’or, Lothar Matthäus, and he played more of CM position anyways. 0 full backs have won the ballon d’or(even with all of their great players such as, Roberto Carlos, Cafú, Lahm etc.) . The last defender to have won the ballon d’or was Cannavaro in 2006. Hell, even traditional Center mids are missing out, Luka Modric and Masopust being the only 2 CMs with a ballon d’or.

The trophies were only really a factor when deciding between Messi and Ronaldo. If they’re both putting up legendary numbers at the same time, the one who was also winning trophies got the ballon dor. We can’t retrospectively say someone should have won X ballon dor based on trophies. Sneider, Ribery were nowhere near Messi and Ronaldo’s level.

2019? Messi or van dijk? And are we starting to undervalue these elite level of numbers at this point? It's Messi for me but I understand otherwise.
2020? Lewa.
Now here's where things get tricky because at this point, the Ballon d'or switched from being for the calender year to for the prior season, you could even argue that we should do it 19/20 and then 20/21, but I'd say it would be the same result. Messi was the best in 19/20 but lewa should win the ballon d'or for that season.
So, 20/21? Lewa performed much better but Messi had a major international trophy. Either way is fine for me.
21/22? Benzema.
22/23? Depends on how much you value a player carrying his nation to a world cup. Messi also had a great season that year but by no means up there with Haaland. Probably Haaland in all fairness.
So, Messi with a minimum 6 but that can be argued it should be as high as 10-12. This is what I mean, there needs to be more concrete parameters. Why shouldn't an individual award be near enough souly decided on performance and not accolades in a team sport like this? I can understand accolades being used as a tie breaker as it's not logical for them to hold so much loose weight.

Balon dor should have nothing to do with titles won, but rather individual performance - goals and assists per game, but also defence stats as well.
The best player doesn't always win, instead it's mostly just the favourite player. Should really be based on individuals stats, winning league's and cups is a team effort and shouldn't dictate the outcome of individual awards.
