The sitcom The Love Boat had a great run, airing from 1976 through 1986. Much of its success can be attributed to its stellar cast and guest roles. But, it's been a long time since this crew was on the open water. In this video, we're taking a look at The Love Boat cast then and now to see how they've changed through the years.
00:00 - Intro
0:15 - Ted McGinley as Ashley Covington Evans
1:21 - Jill Whelan as Vicki Stubing
2:29 - Lauren Tewes as Julie McCoy
3:37 - Pat Klous as Judy McCoy
4:41 - Ted Lange as Isaac Washington
5:49 - Fred Grandy as Burl "Gopher" Smith
6:56 - Bernie Kopell as Adam "Doc" Bricker
8:04 - Gavin MacLeod as Captain Merrill Stubing
Ted McGinley played Ashley Covington Evans, or "Ace". His start in acting is pretty interesting. After a casting director spotted a picture of him in GQ, he was cast on the comedy series Happy Days as Roger Phillips. Just a few years later he would be cast in The Love Boat.
Jill Whelan is a child actor known for her role as Vicki Stubing. In the mid-1980s, in Los Angeles, having returned from England and with The Love Boat series coming to an end, Whelan moved to New York City and worked as an event producer at Madison Square Garden where she helped set-up acts. In 1999, Whelan left acting and started working as an investigative producer/
Lauren Tewes was cast for the role of cruise director Julie McCoy, selected from more than 100 actresses who auditioned. She starred in the third and final pilot of the show, cast the day before production began on the RMS Queen Mary in San Pedro. In 1984, after seven seasons, Tewes was replaced on The Love Boat after a highly public battle with cocaine addiction, which she eventually overcame.
Pat Klous portrayed Judy McCoy, the sister and successor of Tewes' character as cruise director. This occurred when Lauren Tewes was replaced and released from the show. She remained with the series until it ended in 1986. Klous retired from acting in 2002.
Ted Lange is known for his role as the ship's bartender, Isaac. In the early 1980s, following a letter of recommendation from Lynn Redgrave (who he met on an episode of Love Boat), Lange attended a summer school at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to perfect his Shakespeare acting skills. After he left the show in 1987, Lange appeared in various films and guest roles on 227, The Cleveland Show, Glitch!, Evening Shade, Scrubs, Drake & Josh, The King of Queens, Boy Meets World, Psych and Are We There Yet?.
Fred Grandy played purser Burl "Gopher" Smith. He also wrote several vignettes for the show. In 1982, while visiting Turkey to film scenes for the show, Grandy suffered severe burns when a balloon filled with hydrogen exploded. Grandy later ran for Congress, serving four terms as Iowa's congressman. Later, he served as the CEO of Goodwill before returning to entertainment in recent years.
Bernie Kopell's role as Doc was parodied in many shows and films, and multiple times on The Late Show with David Letterman. After The Love Boat, Kopell was so recognizable that he was not in roles often without a nod to his famous role.
Gavin MacLeod played Captain Stubing, which earned him three Golden Globe nominations. He remains active in theater, acting, television, and radio. During his time as the Captain on The Love Boat, MacLeod "very selfishly" (his words) divorced his wife Patti. She then spent the next three years seeking help from psychiatrists on both the West and the East coasts. The couple divorced in 1982, but remarried in 1985. During the mid-1980s, MacLeod and Patti became Evangelical Protestants and credit their faith for bringing them back together.

The soundtrack alone transports me to the happiest of happy times. Thank you Love Boat Cast.. one and all x
This TV show did more for the cruise industry than any advertising could.
Thanks for watching!
The Love Boat was one of my favorite shows back in the day. So many WONDERFUL memories. It helps to get through the 21st century to watch these shows when times were so different and so much better!
Times then were different and so much better . The 80's were my best memories of love, family and life and greatest television shows of our time.
Me. Too!
😂!😂!😂!😂!
RIP Gavin MacLeod thanks for the memories
Gopher was my congressman after the series ended. He was a native of Sioux City Iowa and came back home and won a seat in the United States house of representatives. He later took on the incumbent governor in an unsuccessful primary challenge.
Love Boat was such a great show and every week they had a new showcase of stars! 💕💕
Yes! I loved it & still do!👍👍✊✊
Captain Stubing just passed away today...... So sad......His character got me obsessed with cruising.
What's your favorite memory of Captain Stubing, Karen?
PRAYERS OUT TO CAMPTAIN STUBING!! 🎥🎥🥰😘😍😎💖🙏👼🕊🤧💐💐
I liked that he was such a good Dad to Vicky. He was human, made mistakes and still he was a great Dad. Someone you could look up to and not be disappointed.
RIP Gavin MacLeod, Captain Stubing helped sail me through childhood in the 80s.
SAME HERE IN LIFE!! 💐💐🤧🕊👼🙏💖😎😍😘🥰🎥🔥🤣😂😁👍👍🤗
Yep. I liked him as Murray on the Mary Tyler Moore Show too. Always giving Ted hell. (Jan Griffiths).
He looked kinda molestee
I grew old with them. There was no greater decade than the 80's and there will never be a better sitcom than the love boat.
What's your favorite episode of the show, RBT?
Agreed I grew up with it too 1980s best times wanna go back!
@@karolinesmail489 I loved pretty much everything from the 1980s. It was so great. The Love Boat was always so fun to watch. I still love watching free episodes on Xfinity, whenever I'm depressed and longing for the old days. It's a comforting show for me, and I just loved all the main characters, especially Julie and Gopher! ♥♥♥ My favorite episode was actually the very first episode, with Jimmy JJ Jackson, John Ritter and Captain Stubing's ex-wife on board. After watching this, I plan on laying on my bed all weekend, watching at least 15-20 full episodes of Love Boat, and sipping on some red wine, with my dog, and kitties, cuddled up next to me.
This is one of TV's Best. To this day I haven't heard any negativity of the cast members, they loved each other and were classy.
Your picture of Pat Klaus at 72 is actually LINDA EVANS !
That's right . I see that too.
That's what I thought 🧐
fob1xxl is correct!!! That is a picture of Linda Evans!!!
I thought so myself, thx for clarification..I thought my mind was loosing it..lol
I know...seriously? 🤣
The Love Boat, was such fun....then we’d head to the Discos. Such fun times.
Television was more upbeat. There's way too many dark shows now.
@R Oh yeah okay know it all.
( not Andre) After the discos, how was "The Morning After"?
@R I'm sorry you got such a reception. Unfortunately typical, so few appreciate the truth. What you offered was gold, you are absolutely correct. It's a spiritual crime.
Do you watch Mudfossil University or Wise Up ? Perhaps JonLevi ? We've been lied to about everything. It's a shame that people don't realize but they will. Don't give up. Much love to you R. 🙂
Even the singer of The Love Boat theme is still around . His name is Jack Jones. He's in his early 80s, and still performing. (Jan Griffiths).
This version of the Jack Jones Love Boat theme song is much jazzier and a few more higher notes..what a voice...
@@BillBene67 I love the song he did called "Wives and Lovers". It came out when I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8 years old. Yep, he still sounds as good today. (Jan Griffiths).
I loved the love boat cast. Good memories.
Wow, it seems like yesterday. I was 18. I remember I'd watch The Love Boat with my mom. I had a crush on Gopher.
I love watching the 24 hour The Love Boat channel on Pluto TV. Brings back fond memories. 🙂
Okay, the recent photo of Pat Klous is LINDA EVANS.... lol.
And Ted MCGINLEY is both 57 and 62 in 2020???
Someone didn't do their homework!
28 +38= 57 new math
@@richardschiller7803 😃😃😃😃
I believe also one of the pictures they said was Ted McGinley was Bruce Penhall from CHiPs.
Your dead on that is Linda Evans.
Still nice looking. Men always age better lol
Amazing, they are all still alive... It's because it was a good show with good times...
Yes, that were exactly my thoughts, too. :)
Sadly not any more Gavin MacLeod (/məkˈlaʊd/) (born Allan George See; February 28, 1931 - May 29, 2021) was an American actor best known for portraying Merrill Stubing, the ship's captain, on ABC's The Love Boat. A Christian television host and author whose career spanned six decades.
I was born early 70's I loved watching the Love Boat it was one of my favorite TV shows 💯♥️
It is great to know the cast is still alive and well.
One of the oldest shows with entire cast still alive.
Yes indeed! And looks great for a matter of fact!👍
@blue sky 1961 Gavin is not dead...he still alive & wearing 89 yrs old very well! His birthday 2/28 of dis month & he will be 90! Praise God!!🙏🙏
It sad to me that Ted lang did nothing else after love boat you don't see him in anything any more I think he could've had a better role them being a bartender in the show
@@tonyallen6510 He’s tried, but can’t seem to shake playing Isaac, so he’s what they call typecast.
That was always one of my favorite shows. All of the celebrities and interesting ports of call. Extrodinary!!!
My family absolutely loved this show🎬🎥such wonderful actors!💕
I can't believe Galvin McCloud was only 46 at the time of the Love Boat airing. I always thought he looked much older at the time.
Toward the end, when you were talking about Gavin Mcleod, you showed Bernie Kopell.
That’s because he’s bald!! Bald men always look older than they are.
@@nataliedeshow768 If they cut off the rest of their hair, they'd look younger. But in Gavin's case, that worked greatly in his favor.
Omg I loved the show so much 💗 I wanted to be Vicki so badly and sometime later I wanted to be Julie. What a life would that have been. My favorite was Gopher & the Doc. Good old days we can never get back. Thanks 👍
Ohhhhh bring good memories. One of my favorite shows in my teens 😊
Loved The Love Boat
Thank you Isaac for planting the blueprint for so many men of color, your a true inspiration. We love you so much and Massachusetts.
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
My fav Show back then !! Thanks 👍💜 for doing this!!
Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of video would you like to see?
@@FactsVerse happy days
That is Linda Evans in the older photo and not Pat Klous. Thank you for sharing this wonderful update with us concerning the cast of such an amazing show.
I was only 9 years old when this came out but watched all the episodes lol thanks for the memories and laughs !
Normally when you watch a then and now of the cast of a show, especially a show that is 40+ years old, you expect a few deaths, so it is a pleasant surprise to see all the cast still alive.
Well considering the got Teds age wrong after 38 years. Math is not their strong point. 28 (1982) does not make someone 57 in 2020!!
Sadly Gavin (the captain) McLeod passed away shortly after this lookback was uploaded.
Most of the guest actors also are long gone (I'm familiar with many of them).
Even the Ship itself was junked 2 or 3 years ago after attemps made to revive her.
Nobody wanted to invest in a 50 years old cruise ship.
Kind of "fitting" in a way... the person who played the Captain...and the Ship itself..both gone basically the same year.
Thank you for the memories, I just love ur new concept on here. Can't wait for my notification to go off to see what show u have for us. Thank You❤🙏🏽
And he was a very nice , kind man. My son met him many times at different t.v. Conventions and got a beautiful autographed book, stressing to me, I did a wonderful job raising such a great son.
Such a fun show. I always liked watching all of the actors that were guest stars on the show. I still watch the show on the Pluto TV app.
Nostalgie ❤, Generation 40+ 😊
ALL STILL ALIVE???!!! Incredible!! And honestly, it astonishes me to learn that Gavin McLeod was only 46 when the show started... I thought and still think that he was in his late fifties...
I loved this show growing up still watch it now when it’s on wish they would release it on complete box set x
Jill Whelan; OMG, WOW !!!
That's a great example of the duckling and the swan, but the duckling was really cute.
Tell me about it....wow👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I always wanted to be her growing up being on that ship. She turned out to be a pretty lady.
Fantastic video and tv series. I am so glad all the actor and actresses are currently and fortunately still alive. Hugs from Spain.
its the only tv show of the 70's that all the lead actors ie actress's are ll still alive
The entire cast of Police Woman, CHips and Please Don’t Eat The Daisies are all still alive.
I love this Love Boat show. One of my favorites!
Wow! That is amazing that they are ALL still alive and well (most of them are around my age). It must have been due to all that fresh ocean air they breathed! I remember that show well, and how I loved watching it! My fondest memories of watching that show when I was staying in hotels on layovers with my good friend and flying partner Barbara.
What was your favorite episode of the show, jayteadesigns?
@@FactsVerse You know, it's been so long I really cannot think of a particular one. How 'bout you, do you have a favorite?
Great series and great memories! Damn, though! That was a small boat compared to the ones now!!
"Hi, Captain Stubing. How are Gopher and Doc?" -- Ace Ventura
Love that show ! I watch it when ever I can on rerun's .
Bernie Kopell made an appearance on 'Superstore' back in 2017 as an employee taken with the older female employee. He was always complimenting how attractive her sweaters were, but in reality, he was really interested in what filled out her sweaters.
Lauren will always be my favorite person on Love Boat. She is talented! I sometimes wish they would start LoveBoat again with the same cast.
Likewise here; actually had a crush on Lauren Tewes bc of her personality which reflected quite well in her portrayal of Julie McCoy. When her husband became ill, she retired from acting 2 b his caregiver (he eventually passed away). Gotta admire some1 like Lauren Tewes 4 havin' her priorities str8.
@@b.j.banditt206 She sounds like a great person. I remember Saturday nights my family couldn't wait to watch Love Boat. It was like a vacation for us.
@@vintagegirl68 U betcha; outside if "The Love Boat", the only other thing that I remember Ms. Tewes from's the move "Eyes Of A Stranger" (1981) where the character she portrayed was stalked by a psychpathic bastard. She portrayed that character 2 a "T". Sometime in the mid-1980s, she went in2 retirement from acting & b her (L8) husband's caregiver. Such a dignified woman Lauren Tewes is.
It wouldn't last long
Watching all these mon- Fri. On decades. Tv. Station. Super!!
Thank YOU sir for that, it was and still one of my favorite shows on tV when i was growing up.. And don't forget they always had different actors or actress guest appearing on the show from week to week so you never who was ion the show.. Thanx again alll the way from australia. 😃😎❤
Jill Whelan looks stunning.
Non mi perdevo una puntata, era fantastico love boat, ti faceva sognare l amore e la vacanza❤️
I find it amazing that 38 years have passed between 1982 and 2020 and yet Ted McGinley only aged by 29 years (going from age 28 to age 57) in that time period. I would like to find out how he did that!
Plastic surgery.
I was wondering when Pat Klaus turned into Linda Evans 😅
I still watch dis show every morning & day..it's on now! Lol
What's your favorite episode of the show, Gloria?
Always been a fan of Lauren Tewes; it's sad how her husband passed away & had 2 retire from acting 2 b her husband's caregiver. Nvrthlss, very admirable 4 her 2 take on the role of caregiver. Speakin' of caregivers, they r true heroes (especially more so than ever in the pandemic era).
I have been revisiting Love Boat (the entire series)watching it on CBS All Access, now called Paramount. I also watch Fantasy Island on Videomotion for free and you can see the episodes if you type in the search: Fantasy Island s01e01 and so on in that format. Almost all the episodes have been uploaded. I was 5 in 1977 and loved those shows, but never got to see all of them. It is fantastic to be able to stream them all now with no commercials one after the other.
I remember “Doc” as a little girl, but wow, his voice and demeanor on the show is causing me to have a weird crush on him as an adult all these years later. Doc is a hotty!
Love these people!!
Happy Birthday, Ted Lange!
Are you _the_ Maureen McGovern? If so, I'm a genuine fan. If not, it's kinda cool that you share the same name!
My how we all change , with out even realizing because time goes by so fast .
I was only thinking the same thing while watching this 💚
Ted Lange still looks fantastic. It's true what they say: "Black don't crack!"
Your picture of an older Pat Klous is inaccurate. The picture in have in this slide show is of an older Linda Evan’s.
Please correct this mistake or remove this video.
You are utterly right!!
I noticed that too
Part of the fun of watching this videos is spotting the inaccuracies. Fact checking is not one of his skills.
i saw that too right away
You are right! That is Linda Evans on the right!
Thank you very much for uploading this of "The Love Boat".
I remember seeing every single episode of it very well.

The music is too loud...I had to keep going up and down with the volume to hear the speaking. But thanks for taking the time to share. Very kind of you!
Love it. Great actors.
This show is a great icon.
I enjoyed following the situations they came up with for each show
We did too, Al!
They all look and sound great!
Pat Klous is my cousin and she's still beautiful! If only they had the correct photo.
Loved this show how much has changed for all the cast members
Best show ever i still watch
The re runs.
Me too
I grew up watching that show.
Ted still handsome
One of my favs..prob saw every one!
Ted McGinley was born in 1958, so he's now 62 not 57. He was in 61 episode of Happy Days, 60 episode of the Love Boat and 167 episodes of Married With Children. Somehow he was named the patron saint of Jumping the Shark.
It's weird how some people look and age so completely different over the years while others you can still make out who it is even after they turn 60-70 yrs old.
The reason they called him the patron saint of Jumping the shark is because in those three series you mentioned he was in, in came in at a time when they feel all the life had been gone from the show, was beginning to get stale, and Ted came along and helped revitalize it for a few more seasons.
RIP Captain Stubing 💛
Bernie Koppel....came on!!!! That's Sigfried!!!😉😉😉😉
@4:33 - That 2020 picture looks like LINDA EVANS - NOT Pat Klous

still love watching the show. glad having met some guest stars incl. some of the main-cast incl. the Captain.
I loved this show growing up and Fantasy Island.
My husband took his daughter from his first marriage on a Disney cruise in the 90s. They were told that they were on one of the two ships that were once used for filming the Love Boat. I have since seen a video that those original Love Boat ships were “retired” and now live carved out, meaning their contents stripped down, somewhere I believe in the Middle East.
@@EJulia33 yes, this about the ships is true
Ted mcginley as Ashley Evens ? First picture... I enjoyed it for the most part. Thank you

My family used to have Love Boat parties.
Ted Lange at 72 is FOXY AS HELL!
Ahhhhh... ok
Actually, that wasn't Bernie Kopell's last appearance. He currently has a small role in the CBS sitcom B Positive as one of the seniors living in a nursing home where one of the main characters works.
Saw him on "Mom" (also CBS) recently as well.
On imdb, it says he's going to be in some sort of upcoming movie, too.
You have Ted McGinley as 62 in 2020 and also at 57. He was born in1958 which makes him 62! Get your facts straight.
And Linda Evans didn't play Judy McCoy.

Luv that show good their all alive.
