My parents took me to this game (I was 7) and I remember the ending being just as oddly anticlimactic as this video. I couldn't believe this was how Roger's career was going to end.
I just learned that Roger had a concussion from a Youngblood hit earlier in the game. He said if he had been clear minded they would’ve had a better chance to win and if they had won, he would’ve played two more years. I was so relieved that they lost that game, because I didn’t want Pittsburgh to have to deal with them again.
Historically speaking, fans might not realize how important that play was. If Roger had played two more years, Dallas likely would have traded Danny White because he wanted to be starter before he grew too old. If Dallas had traded White, they would not have passed over their #1 rated quarterback in the draft. A guy by the name of Joe Montana.

I'm a huge Dallas fan. Back in the day even as a kid I recall commenting with my dad that Football is a little different in Dallas. Respect was on the top of the list. Staubach and Landry demanded it. It's ironic because those two did not see eye to eye on the offense they were great leaders who acted professionally and Roger did what he was told. It was so palpable, their love of the game. They heated arguments were saved for the office not the field. Even more impressive was that Roger served five years in the Navy. He put his NFL career on hold and volunteered to go in the Navy serving in Vietnam. How righteous is that? So take a look at what he did in the NFL, then think about what he would of done starting four years earlier.; He chose fighting in the Navy over the NFL he stated "it was the right thing to do". Today the NFL can't even control all their ridiculous side shows payers do. Today even is they loose they still do their thing. How sick is that getting their ass kicked and still they try to upstage the league. Hollywood Henderson a linebacker wanted to shine more that his teen and the NFL I think he would of gone to the hall, but instead, despite his talent was asked to leave Texas
Agree with most of what you’re saying, back in the day, these players were gentlemen, they didn’t get paid the enormous salaries that the players of today get and all that money seems to go to some of these player’s heads. Now had Roger not gone to the Navy, I don’t know if his career would’ve been a whole lot different, because remember, at that time, Dallas had Don Meredith as their starter, and he was very good, Craig Morton was their backup then, and remember Craig was also a good quarterback whose relationship with Landry was better than Staubach’s, he was probably the most underrated quarterback of his time, remember, he played 16 years, he took two of the teams he played for, Dallas and Denver to their first ever Super Bowl, when the Cowboys traded Morton to the Giants, both Staubach and Landry said that they were sad to see him go, because he was a great teammate, but it was for his own good because as good as he was, he wouldn’t get much playing time in Dallas. So, if Roger had started earlier, his career probably wouldn’t be much different, what gets me, is why did he retire when he did ? Had he stuck around for 2 more seasons, he would’ve had at least one more Super Bowl ring

That may be influenced by Don singing "turn out the lights the parties over" every Monday night. It was lame. Roger couldn't go on as he had 20 concussions. As you know it was so different. the QB had to run, had to dodge. Fran, the snake, Bradshaw ETC that got beat into the ground. In the 70's someone felt it was a good idea to have a label Americas team. The First team offered was the Skins, being from Washington and having a solid club. They passed. A label like that is problematic for many reasons. Dallas was a better choice. Clean cut great club. Tex and Coach ran a clean, proper, respectful organization, it was easy to see them as Americas team. Players like Lambert, all of Oakland "even the Raiders cheerleaders" took exception to it and wanted to plant Roger's head into the ground and they did. It's hard to say but he was smart to get out. He had a family and a whole other professional career. Football was a game to be played and enjoyed, what was really important was when it was over what was left to bring home to what really matters. My Fav heart and soul of the boys has got to be Bates. Just because of him a special teams position was made for the all-pro team

I know that though coach Landry and Roger didn’t always see eye to eye, they had a great deal of respect for each other. Anyway, it would’ve been really great for Roger to play one more season and exit the game as Super Bowl champion instead of going out like this, but it is what it is.
I remember the Rams being backed up to their own 3 yard line and having to punt. The Rams punter ran out of the back end of the end zone and taking the safety rather than risking a blocked punt. Thus the odd point total of 19 for the Cowboys.

FM L he had a fantastic ass-kicking defense. Terry’s a good guy. No penalty in liking the guy. As for this 79’ game vs Rams, well it should be clear to all that Dallas was beginning to decline. They would go on to appear in 3 straight NFC championships but would lose them all.
FM L FM I was too young to remember much of SB 13 be you don’t what I seen in NFL films and read in books but, and I too love Roger, class act, but Terry was hindered by the Steelers offensive approach much the same way Aikman was with 90’s cowboys. But both could turn it on when I mattered most. Terry was awesome in SB 13/14 while Aikman single handily kept Dallas in the game in 94’ NFC championship game. I guess bottom line is I’d love to have chatted with both Roger and Terry. And I hate Pittsburgh lol
This one was tough cause Roger's last game..Rams actually came very close to beating Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl that year too..hats off to them hell of a run
Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back on it now, 1979 was the beginning of the end of the Cowboy dynasty. The Doomsday defense was hit the hardest that season. Ed Jones "retired" for one year to try professional boxing. Charlie Water messed up his knee in the preseason that year. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson was kicked off the team in November after he fell out with Coach Landry. Dallas literally lost Pro Bowl Caliber/All Pro players from the strong side of their defense that season. At the end of the season, Staubach, Cliff Harris, and Rayfield Wright retired (All Hall of Famers BTW). The team was still good as a whole, even great at times on offense in the early 1980's, but the end of the glory days of the Landry Cowboys actually began in the 1979 Divisional Playoffs, not in 1981 at Candlestick Park.
Although This Depleted Rams Team limped their way into The Playoffs with a 9-7 mark, no matter how weak of a team they were in 1979, I swear Their Pass Defense was definitely The Strongest in the NFL!
they weren't a weak team in 1979, when you take into account their full body of work leading up to this season...from 1973-1978 , the 6 seasons before 1979, the Los Angeles Rams had a combined record of 66-12, which i'm almost positive was the best in football.. their 9-7 record in 1979, was a mute point when you look at it from the perspective i illustrated..
You are correct. The Rams had been strong (especially defensively) for years under Chuck Knox and Ray Malavasi. This particular year, they had several injuries early in the season, thus losing several games, including being blown our 21 - 6 at Tampa, and 30 - 6 at Dallas. However, they were fortunate to be in the weak NFC West, and had time to get their key players back in time for the playoffs. They even set a record for fewest yards allowed in a game against the Seahawks, who weren't that bad of a team. A hugh reason for their late season success was after Pat Haden broke his hand against the Seahawks, Vince Ferragamo took over.
The week before The Seattle Game, the Rams were in Chicago with Jeff Rutledge as their Starting Quarterback with both Haden and Ferragamo out from Injuries.
The big change was that their starting QB got hurt and was replaced with a better QB in Ferragamo. Haden was not very good. Had Haden been the QB, they surly would hv lost.
Dallas should of won this game Quite a A playoff history vs the old LA Rams. The games went one of two ways: It was either a Dallas blow out (1973, '75, '78, '80. Two of those in LA )or they would allow the Rams to escape with a narrow win (1976, '79, 83 all at Texas Stadium) However I know the last time facing off in the playoffs in '85 (the 8th playoff meeting in 13 years between the two) saw a close game broken open by one Eric Dickerson and his two long TD jaunts in the 2nd half (he had 248 yards) for a comfortable win out in LA
Yep, good ol Roger. Staubach set the standard for every Cowboys quarterback after him. Troy Aikman was the only other Dallas QB who could match it. Tony Romo tried but came up way short.
So many what if's in sports. The Rams went on to beat Tampa in that horrible rain soaked NFC championship game. A play here and there and Dallas could have gone to 5+ super bowls in a row. We never got to see a Cowboys-Oilers or Cowboys-Raiders Super Bowl but that's life.
I remember this as a kid and I so wanted another shot at Pittsburgh because in both previous SBs Dallas lost to the Steelers by 4 and I also had no idea this would be Roger's last game ever.
Earlier in the game Staubach threw a TD pass to Jay Saldi but took a hard hit to the turf as he delivered the ball. He had to be helped off of the field by a couple of teammates. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Roger actually experienced a concussion during that hit. If he were concussed on that play that could explain why he threw a pass to a Guard and missed on all of his pass attempts during the last drive.
Incredibly, the Rams were one of only two teams to beat the Cowboys in the playoffs at Texas Stadium until January 1999, when Dallas lost to the ARIZONA CARDINALS. Unbelievable.
I was at that game and it was quite a gut-punch, moreso because they had blown the Rams out at home 30-6 just weeks earlier at a game I also attended. (At that game, they handed out free "bad bandannas" to everyone that were designed by Preston Pearson. I still have mine somewhere.) Of course, few thought it was the end for Roger at that time. I certainly didn't, even though he joked afterwards about his last pass ever going to "Herbie Scott."

Damn OL Herb Scott. It looked like Staubach was throwing it away and he accidentally caught it. If it's 4th and 10 Staubach wins this game 70% of the time. Then beats TB & finally gets to beat the Steelers.
The one thing I remember about this game, is the Cowboys should have had the ball, and the lead, in the 4th quarter. The Rams had to punt, and some idiot on special teams, ran into the kicker. That gave the Rams a first down, and they went on to score the go ahead touchdown, on that drive.
I woulda liked to see some screens to TD/Springs/Pearson.. Landry kept dialing up medium/long distance throws.. no match against LA’s rush and secondary. They had plenty of time to play it short
Landry needed to give the playbook to Staubach but his ego wouldn't let it. When pregame shows pick your play calling apart for long to intermediate passes only there is a problem. Landry became too predictable and his "trick" plays got them smacked by Pittsburgh twice.
4:52 - Dallas could easily have won this game. Staubach simply had an anti-Staubach moment at the worst possible time and threw the ball directly to an offensive linemen -- the first and only time I ever saw him do this.
He calls a football game way better than Joe Buck does. He'll, he calls any sporting event better than Joe Buck does, even if it's an event involving dominoes toppling.
Bad decision on letting him play with the full effects of a concussion. Just shows how bad it be and how much it can effect coordination. Terrible way to end a career for such a great and legendary player.
It was not right the way Roger ended his career. Not like this. But he quit at the right time. And he had been hit often. Roger had several concussions.

A wedding night spent watching television? The final player chosen in the NFL Draft? In 1976, losing to the Rams had a lot to do with Staubach's broken finger from weeks earlier against the Bears. But here, Roger was healthy, Dallas had slaughtered the Rams, 30-6 in early December, and this LA team, unlike the elite 1976 team, was 9-7 and only made the playoffs on the final play of the season when the Saints missed a FG. Clearly, Scully hit the nail saying the Cowboys were flat after all that emotion spent beating the Redskins a week earlier.This game should never have been close in the fourth quarter. Got to give the Rams credit, though, this is why the games are played on the field, not on paper. Ironically, in 1980, the reverse happened when LA slaughtered Dallas 38-14 on MNF late in the season, only to see the Cowboys eat the Rams alive in the Wild Card game, 34-13, running the ball down LA's throats for 338 yards.

Yep. For three straight seasons , 78, 79, and 80, the winner of the Cowboys-Rams regular season game was eliminated by the other in the playoffs. And those regular-season wins were decisive.
it's one of the best playoff rivalries in NFL history...i think they played each other in the post season 8 times in just a 13 year period, with the two teams splitting the 8 games..
another thing to consider, is the frequency with which these two teams played each other, both in the reg season and playoffs..the first 30 or so seasons of the Dallas Cowboys existence, they played the L.A Rams more than any other team outside their division..i think 25 times to be exact, with L.A having a slight edge with an overall record of 13-12 against Dallas..

This Dallas loss makes the Redskins loss 35-34 to knock them out of the playoffs really stink as a Skins fan. Washington has the better team and had they won, Washington would have won the division and hosted the Rams in RFK.
Huge Dallas fan as a kid but we were in Fairfax county and I caught the Redskins bug that year. Most devastating loss ever. My principal started morning announcements the next day with “Happy Dallas Day.” Sad times.
The cowboys were a great team though I was never a fan and thought they got all the calls( 1975 against Minnesota push off) I hated to see Staubach go out like that. I was looking forward to Steelers/Cowboys III.

Rams made it game though and I believe led after 3rd quarter 19-17, but 3rd and 10 long bomb broke it open in final quarter. Steelers were a great team.
For 3 quarters LA gave Pittsburgh all they could handle. As someone pointed out, the Rams were ahead going into the 4th quarter. Bradshaw has said that game was the least enjoyable of the 4 Super Bowl wins because it of how well the Rams defense played. People forget that the DC for LA that year was Bud Carson, the DC in Pittsburgh from 1973-1977, the glory years of the Steel Curtain. Terry said Carson knew all of their audibles. Bradshaw on MVP despite throwing 3 INTS in the game.

I read something interesting about the San Diego/Houston playoff game in 1979 that I had totally forgotten: Dan Pastorini and Earl Campbell didn't play due to injuries. Yet, San Diego lost 17-14. San nearly gained 400 yds of offense but still lost due to 5 INT's from Fouts. An article on the SI website from back in the day said that Houston had figured out if SD was calling a run or pass based on the way Fouts set up behind center. It gave them an edge in the game because they new what was coming before the snap. Despite that they still only won by 3 points.

Roger Staubach will always be my favorite athlete of all time.
Roger Staubach was way better than Terry Bradshaw.He should have won 4 Superbowls. Bradshaw benefitted by having a better defense.

FM L FM I was too young to remember much of SB 13 be you don’t what I seen in NFL films and read in books but, and I too love Roger, class act, but Terry was hindered by the Steelers offensive approach much the same way Aikman was with 90’s cowboys. But both could turn it on when I mattered most. Terry was awesome in SB 13/14 while Aikman single handily kept Dallas in the game in 94’ NFC championship game. I guess bottom line is I’d love to have chatted with both Roger and Terry. And I hate Pittsburgh lol

I loved every minute of this. Roger had tormented us for years. I didn't feel safe until we stopped that last pass and he retired.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back on it now, 1979 was the beginning of the end of the Cowboy dynasty. The Doomsday defense was hit the hardest that season. Ed Jones "retired" for one year to try professional boxing. Charlie Water messed up his knee in the preseason that year. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson was kicked off the team in November after he fell out with Coach Landry. Dallas literally lost Pro Bowl Caliber/All Pro players from the strong side of their defense that season. At the end of the season, Staubach, Cliff Harris, and Rayfield Wright retired (All Hall of Famers BTW). The team was still good as a whole, even great at times on offense in the early 1980's, but the end of the glory days of the Landry Cowboys actually began in the 1979 Divisional Playoffs, not in 1981 at Candlestick Park.
Although This Depleted Rams Team limped their way into The Playoffs with a 9-7 mark, no matter how weak of a team they were in 1979, I swear Their Pass Defense was definitely The Strongest in the NFL!

You are correct. The Rams had been strong (especially defensively) for years under Chuck Knox and Ray Malavasi. This particular year, they had several injuries early in the season, thus losing several games, including being blown our 21 - 6 at Tampa, and 30 - 6 at Dallas. However, they were fortunate to be in the weak NFC West, and had time to get their key players back in time for the playoffs. They even set a record for fewest yards allowed in a game against the Seahawks, who weren't that bad of a team. A hugh reason for their late season success was after Pat Haden broke his hand against the Seahawks, Vince Ferragamo took over.
The week before The Seattle Game, the Rams were in Chicago with Jeff Rutledge as their Starting Quarterback with both Haden and Ferragamo out from Injuries.
The big change was that their starting QB got hurt and was replaced with a better QB in Ferragamo. Haden was not very good. Had Haden been the QB, they surly would hv lost.

Dallas should of won this game Quite a A playoff history vs the old LA Rams. The games went one of two ways: It was either a Dallas blow out (1973, '75, '78, '80. Two of those in LA )or they would allow the Rams to escape with a narrow win (1976, '79, 83 all at Texas Stadium) However I know the last time facing off in the playoffs in '85 (the 8th playoff meeting in 13 years between the two) saw a close game broken open by one Eric Dickerson and his two long TD jaunts in the 2nd half (he had 248 yards) for a comfortable win out in LA

Yep, good ol Roger. Staubach set the standard for every Cowboys quarterback after him. Troy Aikman was the only other Dallas QB who could match it. Tony Romo tried but came up way short.
So many what if's in sports. The Rams went on to beat Tampa in that horrible rain soaked NFC championship game. A play here and there and Dallas could have gone to 5+ super bowls in a row. We never got to see a Cowboys-Oilers or Cowboys-Raiders Super Bowl but that's life.
I remember this as a kid and I so wanted another shot at Pittsburgh because in both previous SBs Dallas lost to the Steelers by 4 and I also had no idea this would be Roger's last game ever.

Earlier in the game Staubach threw a TD pass to Jay Saldi but took a hard hit to the turf as he delivered the ball. He had to be helped off of the field by a couple of teammates. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Roger actually experienced a concussion during that hit. If he were concussed on that play that could explain why he threw a pass to a Guard and missed on all of his pass attempts during the last drive.

I was at that game and it was quite a gut-punch, moreso because they had blown the Rams out at home 30-6 just weeks earlier at a game I also attended. (At that game, they handed out free "bad bandannas" to everyone that were designed by Preston Pearson. I still have mine somewhere.) Of course, few thought it was the end for Roger at that time. I certainly didn't, even though he joked afterwards about his last pass ever going to "Herbie Scott."

Back when I LOVED football and the Cowboys. Thanks to the MANY rules added and the "it was only me and my ability that scored" attitude players have, I stopped watching it in 1999. Plus "head coach" and Jerry Mr. Ego Jones made my choice easy.

The one thing I remember about this game, is the Cowboys should have had the ball, and the lead, in the 4th quarter. The Rams had to punt, and some idiot on special teams, ran into the kicker. That gave the Rams a first down, and they went on to score the go ahead touchdown, on that drive.

Landry needed to give the playbook to Staubach but his ego wouldn't let it. When pregame shows pick your play calling apart for long to intermediate passes only there is a problem. Landry became too predictable and his "trick" plays got them smacked by Pittsburgh twice.
4:52 - Dallas could easily have won this game. Staubach simply had an anti-Staubach moment at the worst possible time and threw the ball directly to an offensive linemen -- the first and only time I ever saw him do this.

This drive felt as anti-climactic for Staubach's career as....as...I can't even find the words. Deflated balloons after a birthday party is over? Dirty dish water filling the sink? A wedding night spent watching television? The final player chosen in the NFL Draft? In 1976, losing to the Rams had a lot to do with Staubach's broken finger from weeks earlier against the Bears. But here, Roger was healthy, Dallas had slaughtered the Rams, 30-6 in early December, and this LA team, unlike the elite 1976 team, was 9-7 and only made the playoffs on the final play of the season when the Saints missed a FG. Clearly, Scully hit the nail saying the Cowboys were flat after all that emotion spent beating the Redskins a week earlier.This game should never have been close in the fourth quarter. Got to give the Rams credit, though, this is why the games are played on the field, not on paper. Ironically, in 1980, the reverse happened when LA slaughtered Dallas 38-14 on MNF late in the season, only to see the Cowboys eat the Rams alive in the Wild Card game, 34-13, running the ball down LA's throats for 338 yards.

Huge Dallas fan as a kid but we were in Fairfax county and I caught the Redskins bug that year. Most devastating loss ever. My principal started morning announcements the next day with “Happy Dallas Day.” Sad times.

Rams made it game though and I believe led after 3rd quarter 19-17, but 3rd and 10 long bomb broke it open in final quarter. Steelers were a great team.
For 3 quarters LA gave Pittsburgh all they could handle. As someone pointed out, the Rams were ahead going into the 4th quarter. Bradshaw has said that game was the least enjoyable of the 4 Super Bowl wins because it of how well the Rams defense played. People forget that the DC for LA that year was Bud Carson, the DC in Pittsburgh from 1973-1977, the glory years of the Steel Curtain. Terry said Carson knew all of their audibles. Bradshaw on MVP despite throwing 3 INTS in the game.

I read something interesting about the San Diego/Houston playoff game in 1979 that I had totally forgotten: Dan Pastorini and Earl Campbell didn't play due to injuries. Yet, San Diego lost 17-14. San nearly gained 400 yds of offense but still lost due to 5 INT's from Fouts. An article on the SI website from back in the day said that Houston had figured out if SD was calling a run or pass based on the way Fouts set up behind center. It gave them an edge in the game because they new what was coming before the snap. Despite that they still only won by 3 points.
