      It's really remarkably difficult to draw a tree, isn't it?! They look like they'd be pretty easy to draw, b/c really, there isn't much to them after all. Damned little buggers if you ask me, but I suppose the more I practice the more they may look like actual trees. At least that's what I'm hoping for before pure frustration kicks in, as my piece of watercolor paper goes sailing across the room, quickly followed by a pencil....

    I have a question does quality of materials have effect on a final product?

    • @lizkramer9819
      @lizkramer9819 Před 7 lety +9

      rounak rangare Another late reply (I just discovered the video), but yes, the quality of both the pencils and the paper definitely makes a difference! Derwent brand watercolor pencils are very chalky for me and I usually cannot get them to completely dissolve. Also, cheaper pencils (which don't necessarily include Derwent) will tend not to be as lightfast.
      There are several high end brands, but I like Faber Castell Albrecht Durer. They dissolve completely so YOU choose to leave lines vs the pencil MAKING you leave lines.
      You need some "tooth" or texture to the paper, but many artists like a smoother paper than you would think. Bristol non-watercolor paper is SUPER smooth, too smooth. You can't layer. Many artists go with Hot Press watercolor paper, the smoothest kind of watercolor paper, but not as smooth as Bristol/Vellum finish non-watercolor paper (does that even make sense? :-) ). Then you have to see what kind of absorbency you like.
      I find Arches kind of terrible for watercolor painting, but I am actually really liking it for watercolor pencil. It allows dissolution of the pencil but is so absorbent, you can control where the water goes as you dissolve the pencil lines. In watercolor painting, the absorbency is very hard because you can't get a smooth wash - hard lines everywhere.
      Anyway, a year late, but hope that helps.

      This reply is coming very late, but I just discovered the video! In case it's helpful, many watercolor pencil brands are the same diameter as regular colored or graphite pencils. You can sharpen in any old sharpener (of course good hand held rotary blade sharpeners or high end electric sharpeners are the best), or use a utility knife to shave off the wood and make the lead a fine point. I think the other commenter was saying that some sharpeners come with two holes, one for wider and one for narrower width pencils.
