And the award for best supporting role in this video goes to that starter!
That starter would have burned up if it hadn't been frozen!
Hope you have a shelf full of starters! Wow!
give the poor starter a breather
Not gonna build up as much heat as fast when it's that cold out
Dang bro that's a great starter you got on that thing!!
the large starter definitely helps on this thing!
That starter definitely wasn't made in China LOL
They hold up Very Well!
I took a lot of cranking, but she fired up! Pretty good for that little diesel at -20C!
Intake heater or propane torch and they start up A lot better lol
Cool setup, however I would never “crank” an engine that long, you could damage the starting motor by overheating it. I would use the intake heater or a block heater setup for cold weather use.
@@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869i wouldnt really worry about overheating when its -20 degrees lmao
Now, that's an extremely hard start...gotta love it!
Normally -30 She will start With a LOT of Cranking LOL!!
If i preheat her with a torch for 10min she will fire right up like summer time.
Best diesel winter additive is mixing diesel fuel with kerosene...1 gallon for every 5 gallons of diesel...old farmers trick...helps with cold starts as well
I had worked remote mountain oilfield were it was minus 60 f at night often - we used 1gallon of motor oil to 50 gallons of kerosene or jet fuel - instead of diesel -
I had worked remote mountain oilfield were it was minus 60 f at night often - we used 1gallon of motor oil to 50 gallons of kerosene or jet fuel - instead of diesel -
Jet fuel is refined diesel...and has additives to cope with -60F at altitude.
The oil is for extra lubrication of the injection pump.....

Now this is a good start video finally somebody who knows how to hold the key for more than 1.2 seconds LMFAO the starter is probably crying but he sure is giving it a good shot
Starter motor is still going strong LOL!
Can't say the same about the battery cables they kinda got cooked LOL!
Ether up that intake and pray it doesn't explode
Thought about it a few times , But never had too LOL!
As a rule of thumb a compression diesel will not just start up below 32°F or 0°C - when it's cranked the compressed air heats till the cylinder, piston and head is above 32° then the engine will start -
Glow plug engines generally fare out better in cold country for start ups -
THUMBS UP SHARED
I've been lookin at these little Chinese diesel motors and have wondered the feasibility of putting one into a ChangLi truck lmao
nice rhythm
Got a Chinese diesel generator. When cold I put some lube oil in the cylinder head and it starts right away.... With some smoke.
It's a loud machine but it serves me well.
I have done that a few times. But I kinda like the Hard Starts LOL!
GONNA NEED A NEW STARTER SOON IF YOU KEEP DOING THAT LOL
Starter would not even be warm after that easy start LOL!
Hahahahaha I was thinking the same thing 😂

Better than my idi
Its better to cover more than 50% of cooling fan grill in cold conditions to reduce amount of cold air blown in to the engine.Optimal working temperature of cylinder head in air cooled engines is 100+°C. In icy conditions its not possible to reach this temperature without blocking some cooling air. Especially diesels are very thermal effective and you can seize the engine because outer cylinder wall is cold and shrinks and piston is hot and expands.
I could put oil into the head or INSTALL a glow plug but running a 100 dollar starter until it smokes. I'm speachless
Starters are FREE when you have MANY spares and never needed them LOL!
i had well over 50 of the little diesels and never ever needed a spare starter
How has this motor done long term? Would you recommend it after owning it for a while?
I’ve seen a lot of people with Chinese diesel motors. They can’t be shit tbh. Pretty cheap, simple parts, lots of people use them. There might be different brands, but they are just different sellers
@@colesteinlagethis particular diesel engine is a yanmar clone, just like how the predator 212 is a honda clone.
I know that stack is cool. But there is a reason why they don’t put stacks on mowers. It’s called, “the accidental face plant on the pipe .” A heat shield could be in order. Safety first.
The Pipe is never that hot on this engine being a diesel , But i know what you mean LOL!
We call it natural selection were I come from.
Sounds like you don’t understand how cold it gets there
Crunchy snow
Will not be long and we will have that back!
(I cant Wait)
" How to crank the life out of your starter and cook it in a -20 cold start video ".........
It started because of the starter going into nuclear meltdown and warming the block. Get one of those air inlet heaters that looks like a sparkplug but is a heating coil on the end.
Starter is never even hot LOL!
Starter is WAY oversized for the Engine.
It's The same size / Kw that many cars and trucks use. .
tip for better starting: give it some more trottle
too much Diesel Fuel Atomization will actually Cool the cylinder more
Hows that 6hp work for you? I have an old craftsman 12hp petrol tractor with a 5 speed+reverse that needs a engine and I wanna go diesel so badly for the torques and the longevity of the engines! My "clutch" is just a tensioner pulley and a big spring so that when I push the "clutch" it'll just pull out the pulley and when I release it it'll just push the pulley back into place cuz it runs a transaxle with a pulley up top where a long n large belt runs up to the front of my tractor where the clutch pulley are and a tad further up is where the engine pulleys are (mine actually has a PTO that I can activate via lever on my dash) oh and the gear shift lever is on the floor between the seat and the part of tractor that the floor rises up to become the very empty dash [lights switch, keyed ignition, streering wheel, PTO lever, choke lever and hourmeter] lol I did my throttle off the side lever cuz it ain't a mower but I used some mower parts to give it a lever operated throttle like dem really super old bigger real tractors
It's working great , even with a snow blower and mower deck.
I have installed 6HP and 10HP diesels into at least 5 sears tractors now.
So is there horizontal shafted diesel or is there an angled adaptor or how ya did it
It looked like you used the horizontal style engine
Where did you buy this engine from?
To all the ones that are whining about the poor starter, good God they're not that delicate LOL the neighbor kids had a little toy bulldozer that they rode on,, they use the Delco starter and a 12-volt battery never heard it any
I’m putting one of these in my case 446, is there a way to throw my pto clutch on this thing for my mower deck and snowblower?
PTO Clutch should bolt up no problem.
How tall is that engine
Hot water but I just waited till spring
Which motor is this I want one
Omg, 2 HONDA oddysey
So how did you hook up the starter on the motor

RIP starter
Nice and cold as a rock lol 😂😂 😂
YUP ! Thanks for Watching
Nothing like “rolling smoke” while pushing snow!
I think I will install a glow plug on mine.
I have Cumming Intake heaters on a few of my little diesels , But never did use them much yet.
Helps a LOT but at the same time.. Draws the battery down a good amount.
Look at Thermostart flame intake heaters.
Same principle but low relative draw...
most of the heat comes from the burning diesel which burns after passing through the Thermostart..
Available from tractor parts suppliers.
Used on Perkins engines, Zetor and Massey Ferg tractors.
youre going to need a new starter very soon, do some pre-heating and you will last a lot longer. Yeah Id add some kerosene and hit the intake with a propane torch. But its your engine/
Quit whining about the starter they're not that goddamn fragile ,
depends on which starter you have. And its likely the cables will fail and melt the posts or overheat the wire.@@IanHotson

@@IanHotson Ive got a 78 yanmar with origional starter, 3 cyl diesel 18 or so hp, i run the starter like this, well i usually crank if for thirty seconds and let it sit. That warms up some stuff a little then i give it a good crank. Diesel starters like you say are durable.
Could always drain the oil and fill it with hot oil
I have a Stick on block heater that works well , But it's only heating the "Base plate" And with the snowplow installer the heater is not as good.
Propane torch to the cylinder head for 2-3min and she always fires right up.
Yeah you go ahead and drain the oil when it's - 20... That will be sooooo comfortable and easy 🤦
How many starters have u been through?
0 , Out of 50+ Diesel engines i sold , Not one has failed.
The Starter motor on them is a HEAVY Duty model , I think 1.8KW of power
"Car starter size" I am VERY Impressed with how well they are holding up!
Even though i tried to kill a starter at least 50+ Times , They never fail.
First cold start of the year now that's a cold start you should cold start all the machines 500 and all but it might be easy idk lol and jesus your going to ware the starter out on that thing lol could u put a heater or glow plugs that thing is it possible and so much for the garage project but there's next year

Shes coaching as u started going
I'm pretty sure that starter hates you.
I'm going to move to some placeike like this so I can complain. How bad it is
Great battery...which company
It's a Canadian Tire Brand , Witch many Company's use that model.
I know i had it listed in my other build Videos.
Next time use a half a can of either and save that starter... or leave it running when it's gonna be super cold
Do not squirt ether into it...
He has admitted otherwise always using heat...a propane torch for 10 minutes.
This was clickbait!
So inexpensive. I have to wonder if one of these could be used in a sailboat since low hp deisels are so often used in that application. What do you think?
I don't see why not , i am looking to do the same one day if i can find a small boat to install one in.
Or you could just give her a little shot of ether to help it out like a decent human being lol
There is a water cooled version of those engines also that would work - there used in all the Asian countries -
You'd really want an open boat installation to give the air cooling a chance..
very noisy little motors and there are water cooled ones that are much better and quieter because they are water cooled.
that starter is screaming for help haha
What is the consumption of that small engine?
Only Two Tanks Full All Year LOL!
Bad Chad???
Holy shit man I hope you don't do that everytime you start it because that starter was probably smoking hot just give it a little spray of ether or shoot some fire down the intake
🤣

And i sold over 50 Of the Small Diesel Engines like this , And not one customer had an issue with the starter motors.

If you haven't already croaked the starter you soon will.
I am unimpressed by idiocy.
Thankfully I now know from reading the comments that you usually preheat the engine.
Have a look at "thermostart" flame heaters...available cheaply from tractor parts supply houses.
A 12VDC small battery plus a small supply of diesel into the metal intake manifold via the Thermostart...
and it will be even faster..1 minute or less!
With the Cummings Grid Heater , About 5-10 secounds of Crank for it to start in -20 weather
Rip starter
That poor starter!!!😖

You should’ve just dumped oil while it was running down the little port where you can put oil in the cylinder head that way it will rev really high and blow up
I have the 10hp model single cyl diesel on a old wheel horse and it starts right away even in -20 to -30c weather
Yes the 10hp models seems to start with about 1/4 the amount of cranking.
I have had two "brand name" 10hp and one of them started within 10sec of cranking in this weather
depending on the compression , and IF i pull start the engine REALLY hard , It will crank over and start SO much better as it spins over quicker.
If that was a little yanmar you only would have to bump the key and it would be running.
not in this cold lol , i worked with many real YANMAR's
Mine started fine in -35 and it didn't make more than a revolution or two.Maybe it's the john deere green paint that makes the difference.@@starpuss
But was yours kept in a heated shed....?@@jackkonnof4106
@@jackkonnof4106 the ts start on yanmars if it works is great
That poor starter
The Starter LOVES it!!!
those were stolen yanmar design believe it or not...
it is not a good idea to grind the starter that way, better to assist the engine to have an immediate start, the starter will not resist such a treatment. I don't believe that the parts are available for such chinese engines.
I have around 5 spare engines , NEVER needed any spare parts yet in 10 or so years using them.
the starter is about to go
I don’t understand why you have it at full throttle when it’s cold I think that’s just a stupid idea altogether I would’ve just had it at idle
Will not start on Idle ,Not when it's this cold.
20 starters later.
