The first lyrics definitely fit with his situation in that episode: I still hang around Neither lost nor found Hear the lonely sound Of music in the night Nights are always right That's all that's left for me
Written by Joe Sample & Will Jennings, this 1979 track went on to become the biggest seller by the group & it also enabled them to reach a newer Soulful audience, the Jazz to Soul switch by adding Randy Crawford, who's vocals was simply exquisit, this enabled the world to notice her as a singer, as she had been recording since 1976
Correct! -- Randy Crawford really nailed this song down ... When the Crusaders played it at the Newport Rhode Island Festival in 1987 they used instead Miss Reichii Guillory, but although she was also delicious on the Street Life vocal she wasn't quite the real deal, as was Randy Crawford here.... maybe that's a personal opinion however, for what it's worth....
Went with a friend to see Randy Crawford at the Hammersmith Odeon I think and met her afterwards and got her autograph, and she was quite small (can't have been more than about 5 feet tall) and really sweet.
After I was too young to have a solid appreciation for great music, but before I was old enough to hate my parents, we all went to the Saratoga Jazz Fest one year when these guys headlined. Her voice was even more impressive in person. I remember dancing with Mom in the little spaces between our laid out blankets and our neighbors lawn chairs. We stayed at the Triple Crown Motel and my brother and I swam in the creek that pooled out under the springs.
awwww, to be a teenager again!!!wut a great time tht was 4 me!!! and my friends!!! listening to this , and drinking wild Irish rose, wine, boones farm apple wine!!!!!! and getting caught by my mom, and getting the shyt kicked out of me!!! awwww,,, good times!!!!
I remember when I was young, I woke up one night and saw my brother and my dad jamming to this. We stayed up all night listening to some nice jams, I wish I could go bring that day back.
I just wanted to say that Mr. Felder will be missed. For the times spent listening to the Jazz Crusaders and then the later incarnation of the Crusaders will be forever etched in my soul. It just seems that there aren't many of my jazz heroes left. They are all in their late 70's and 80's. A generation of musical genius is leaving us with great albums of music. May Jazz live forever and ever!!!
I bought this album in 1979 at a place call Ojuelegba in Lagos, Nigeria. The place bears semblance of what this song is about as girls hang about the place at night for all the wrong reasons. This song will forever remain a classic to be cherished by those who know what good music is all about.
Aint no summer complete without barbeques to hearing this jazz classic..Smooth & relaxing for a cool breeze in the backyard with some cold beers, cuties & good buddies.
memories of houston, texas...i was there for this great musical movement...plenty of live venues ti listen to greats like arnet cobb and the mob...oh the 80's!!!
RIP to Joe Sample...I was aware of this song since it's stay on the charts in 1979 but didn't even know of a longer LP version! Really easy going well=done song....
The master of the electric keyboard and piano, Joe Sample wrote the music to this song. The Crusaders signature song to many. What a musical genius, he will be missed. RIP Joe.
@suninmyhair - Wish there was more music like this today with so much feeling ,that's why I favor the old school .. @VENUSTRINENEPTUNE definitely hot music
This song and "Be Alright" by Zapp for some reason or another give me beneficial magical power. I can't explain it but whenever i hear these two songs it's like the good Lord is letting me know that he has my back... Selah
Well, yeah - The Jazz Crusaders, even though when this was recorded they'd dropped "Jazz" from their name. Disco was nearing it's bitter end when this was recorded in 1979.
Now this is a song from a couple of movies.A lot of people think this was only in the movie "Jackie Brown".REWIND to the year 1981.If you remember the movie "Sharky's Machine",they played this song as the THEME of that movie.Just a piece of history about this song.
Street Life produced by Joe Sample and Will Jennings is a awesome track that reminds me of the good ol' days when you are out on the town or just want to enjoy those jazzy soulful sounds of a sharp hit but enjoying the comforts of joy riding or skating, jogging, or in some facet of jazzy soul relaxation moods!~~
The best breakthrough song ever by The Crusaders back in 79 featuring beautiful vocalist Randy Crawford and it was used by Burt Reynolds "Sharkey's Machine Theme."
fair play to the boy for putting it up. regardless of length it's just top notch. the actual album version does go on a bit. doesn't fill a dancefloor like this one
Depending on a individual's personality, or what they've been exposed to; jazz, can be a laid-back, smooth, groovin', musical gate to broaden your perspective on life. Plus, there's plenty of jazz compositions that will set your soul on fire, and get you up on your feet. This particular album is the epitome of modern day jazz.
Yeah, me too! Joe Sample and the Crusaders (Live!) Mammoth Lakes CA @ the first Summer Music Festival around 1980 and also featuring Jeannie, theSierra Minstrel. Do you recall the Brazilian percussionist?

The first lyrics definitely fit with his situation in that episode:
I still hang around
Neither lost nor found
Hear the lonely sound
Of music in the night
Nights are always right
That's all that's left for me
I'm so glad my ears had the privilege to listen to this music in the 1970's and I'm still listening in 2018
Vintage late Summer/early Fall 1979 music. 40 years passed quickly but this time period’s music and events lives forever in our memories...

This is not the album version. There is an extended sax solo on the original album. This is the edited version for radio.

This is the _singles edit._ "Street Life" on the "Street Life" album is 11 minutes 18 seconds long.
