If there is a better female vocalist alive today I have yet to hear it. Randy Crawford is peerless. God rest you Mr Sample and thanks for all the great tunes.
Tears CAME 2 ME when I heard it on HBO music station & looked it up. I answer cuz in 1979 I lived that song w/a 5 yr. old son (now 37) & me 54. Wuz in the life but this song DEFINETLY had an impact on me 2 change my life as a Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Mother & Friend. Happy MD 2 u & Urs!
You can't ask for anything more then soulful, sweet and truthful expression. Randy and the Crusaders I love what you have done and whatever you may do.
We played this in high school stage band with me on sax. I got into new wave soon after, but jazz made a real comeback in the late 70's early 80's... That said, Randy made this song a huge crossover hit. Randy Crawford. This was back when brothers referred to their significant others as my "lady".
I'm buzzed right now and then I found this vid.....this is that "AT THE PARK CHILLIN WITH THE OUTDOOR CONCERT FOOD, SHORT-DOG OF BRANDY AND A NICELY LIT FOR THE CRUSADERS...type of stuff!!!
Absolutely wonderful - the Crusaders and Randy Crawford are the best - this is just perfect. Fender Rhodes electric piano and the bass player is amazing. Great stuff !
Damn when she came out there I caught chills. I was a little kid when this came out and I remember loving this. Its just funny to me now, thinking of me playing with my Barbie dolls grooving to this.
J'adore ce morceau et la sur les 2 parties c'est une vrai bombe et j'adore wilton felder a 2mn40 quand il s'eclate en dansant et la on sens tout le groove que ce groupe génère.. Merci beaucoup beaucoup que de frissonssss
This was about 1980 in The Jaap Eden Hall (Ice Skating Stadium) in Amsterdam. Randy Crawford did a show the same night as well......two days later I saw Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius......decided that weekend that I didn't want to play bass :)
It was the time of the combination of soul & jazz becoming the today's called SMOOTH JAZZ- my favourite style in the new century! Listen to "Pieces Of a Dream", Grover Washington Jr.( R.I.P) and naturally Randy Crawford who transport it into the 90's and the new century!
The Crusader's have always been one of my favorite bands from day 1. Randy Crawford what a beautiful sultry voice. Makes one want to have sexy interludes all day and night. The band is as usual awsum!!! Thanks for posting this and part 2.
Simplesmente Maravilhososss, a cantora Randy SHOW sensacional de uma voz lindíssima encantadora e ela é lindaa simpática, a música tudo um *SHOW*, amoooo essa música e todas .A Banda sensacional os músicos SHOW Parabéns para todos e muiito sucessos!! Deus os ilumine sempre.
Finally!! Someone posted this great song. The first time ive heard it, i was at a party, and i had to many beers. Listend to radio Luxemburg the only radiostation we could listen to in sweden -79. And when the piano solo, sax solo and the guitarsolo came on.....WOW! Got the same feeling with: I should haved loved ya - Narada Michael Walden
RIP Joe Sample performs SCRATCH. Crusaders at their best which inspired the Establishment of Scratch Studios and the creation of the Syncosmusic genre now on Syncos Radio Africa.
Wow Joe Sample has certainly aged well. He looks great on other videos. Love this song! Thanks for the video. Back in the day this was one of mom's favorites.
Love this video. Love the Crusaders and Randy. I remember mornings putting the Street Life album on the turntable and pulling out the disc washer then cranking it up while getting ready for work. It used fire me up for the day. Another extended jazz / vocal I love is "Land of Make Believe" by Chuck Mangione with vocals by Esther Satterfield. Check it out.
When I was 14, I loved R&R and am not interested in Jazz, Fusion... but I don't know why,I loved this song so much!! This video is so great. Thanks for uploading. :)
Yeah, it was "SCRATCH". The introduction was made before the title song, that opened side one. "Chain reaction" is a studio album. By the way I recommend that those who know "Street life" only delve into the older albums, from the Jazz Crusaders era to the end of the seventies. Lots of superb jazzfunk.
I remember watching the beginning of the movie "Sharkey's Machine" and hearing this song for the first time and thinking WHO is this singer???!! I LOVE this song!
I like the way that Randy and the band leader (Sax) steps are in accord around the 2:00 mark. He looks really cool, only a tall man could grove with his hands behind his back and look good - others would just look wrong!!! His moves set hers of when she comes on stage, she feels his 'vibes' and takes her cue from him - that's why she's facing the band generally at first - they're all feeding off each other. Lastly some nice, understated dancing from Randy - you go with them hips dem!
You are most definately right Oleoid !! this crap that they play on the radio now and try to pass off as music is a dam disgrace!! shame on these record companies for pushing this juke instead of real music with storylines and meaning!!
@norfleetw you got that right! there's nothin like the experiance of an HBU. it stays with you thru out your lifetime, FAMU FOREVER, TSU THE ARCH RIVAL FOREVER!
@mrsbasemore Sorry I stepped on your sore foot!! All I was saying is that these ladies all have the same musical cultural background and sometimes it's easy to mix up one from the other. It's all good! THAT"S ALL!
They don't make'em like this anymore. Nowadays' artists think think they can play and sing. I think not. Mostly they sing off-key live and there sure ain't no soul in it anymore. These guys on stage actually have fun, it's in their hearts, not in their pockets !
You can hear the smile in her voice, rare quality most singers don't have.
Sept. 13: Joe Sample passed away today in Houston, TX. R.I.P. Joe Sample (1939-2014) Thank you and God bless
NO ONE CAN EVER TOUCH THIS SISTER NOR THIS SONG ~~ THANK YOU GUYS FOR THIS JAM!
She has the best smile. She always looks so happy, and who wouldn't be with a voice like that.
Never grows old .... sweet sweet Randy C. Love that little quiver in her voice! Great groove going on here!
I felt in love with her smile... For things like worth to live
If there is a better female vocalist alive today I have yet to hear it. Randy Crawford is peerless. God rest you Mr Sample and thanks for all the great tunes.
Stephen,
Couldn't have said it better, so thank you.
my dad took me watching joe sample and randy crawford this year! AMAZING! i'm so grateful i was introduced to such ace music
Great music from the past that lives today!! The best!!
A beautiful Ms Crawford and still lovely to this day
And yet another wonderful version of this classic! This one is somehow slightly rock-ish, with quite a strong drive. Thanks a lot for posting!
I think the power, joy and creativity of those times, will never come back
ciao from italy

The lyrics to this song are so hauntingly true and absolutely still true to this day as it was in the 80's when I first heard it. The truth.
everytime with an amazing modesty …and nothing heard than best music from this marvelous singer
Yeh the saxo is....soooooooooooo funky good! Never heared a saxo better than him. xxxx
Absolutely wonderful - the Crusaders and Randy Crawford are the best - this is just perfect. Fender Rhodes electric piano and the bass player is amazing. Great stuff !
Love that piano tinkling...loved this era! Randy crawford sings with her silky smooth voice! Glad I was a seventies chick! first time round..
Damn when she came out there I caught chills. I was a little kid when this came out and I remember loving this. Its just funny to me now, thinking of me playing with my Barbie dolls grooving to this.
RC makes my eyes water as a stand-alone piece.
But....what a group of musicians these folks were.
Music just don't get any better than this.
The 70'S BEST ERA OF MUSIC AND MOST CREATIVE. 80'S WERE COOL TOO AND THE 90'S BUT TODAY MUSIC SUCKS!.
J'adore ce morceau et la sur les 2 parties c'est une vrai bombe et j'adore wilton felder a 2mn40 quand il s'eclate en dansant et la on sens tout le groove que ce groupe génère..

They made two Shows in maybe 3 hours....both were totally Sold Out.
@russjchandra Actually, it's what was called Fusion Jazz in that it fused together Jazz, Blues, Funk and R&B.
It that Larry Carlton on guitar. Look the old school four string bass. Awesome post
