“To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 -- So "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV. It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the groups concept. From the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of Life. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary. The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
Now you also need to know that in the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. (So the story in the beginning is explaining the groups legend and why they are split into two groups and what they have been sent to Earth to do.) So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "MAMA," not just the K version, because even though both the K and M versions of "Mama" feature all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. Plus, this is a good opportunity for you to hear what the song sounds like in both Mandarin and Korean. (I encourage you to watch EXO-M's version of "MAMA" even if you don't react to it and really listen to the introduction story at the beginning. Now that you know a little more about what it is trying to tell you, you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.) However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and I like to think it stands for Love. 😍
In Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or queen. Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs here is a list of the members and what their special power is.

EXO debuted in 2012 with 12 members divided in two subgroups; EXO-K(singing in Korean) and EXO-M(singing in Mandarin-Chinese). After three Chinese members left, they are now one group just called EXO(all singing in Korean, Chinese and Japanese). EXO are the biggest group in Asia and known for their exceptional vocals, dancing and live performances. The two main rappers are Chanyol(red hair) and Sehun. This MV is actually a sequel to their MV Lotto. Please react to EXO Wolf live in Tokyo Dome. SM-Entertainment don't sub their MVs as they usually don't promote outside Asia.
Um, I'm pretty sure NCT 127 (subunit of NCT), an SM group is promoting outside Asia right now, so that is not fully true for the company.

As an EXO'L, we had several theories about every MVs but it always change because we were sometimes wrong lol.
Anyway, this was our theory. The day they dropped Monster, Lucky one mv was dropped first.
In Lucky One mv, they were in a facility, like a sleek-murder facility where they're being experimented by some robots (not literally). Their powers were awoken in Lucky One and as they did it, they managed to go out there.
So in Monster, they were probably in a run from authorities and all. The snake symbolizes the 'traitor' or called as "spy". We expected Chen(the guy who turned to his back) as the spy before but I think it is really Baekhyun. When they went out of the facility in Lucky One, the robots or Red Force's people were watching them and same goes to monster. You could see several CCTVs which literally mean that they're being watched. The red light from it tells us that it is the Red Force. So yeah, they were chased by authorities but Baekhyun who acted as a spy helped them in the end and they were freed.
The MV after Monster was Lotto. They were a bit out of hand in there, trying to gamble, enjoy, waste money, etc. It feels like after they were freed from Monster, they decided to enjoy themselves.
Now, when I say that our theories were wrong, the whole point changes. In their recent mv called obsession, there were 2 EXO. It said that the clones were in the Earth for years now. Why our theories messed up is probably because all these time, the EXO in the MVs aren't the real EXO, they are all the clones. EXO was stucked on a maze last 2014 and they haven't gone out from there thus making it seem like the EXOs in the mvs from 2015 and recent are the clones. We really don't know anymore. Everything is blur for us.

The whole existence of exo is a fucking story. From the very first mvs and concepts they had to now, everything is connected. Everything about exo were probably planned ahead of time. Like how their releases always happen when theres a fucking eclipse or shit like that. The mvs also have subtle clues on what happens next. That is what makes every exo comeback interesting and worth the wait. It's like an ongoing story and every comeback, every mv, every concept, is a new clue, a new chapter of the story. Not to mention their songs are always well- produced and the vocals (DAMN THE VOCALS 💯💯💯), the rap, the choreography, everything! I've been a fan since the beginning but whenever I think of the story behind everything, I still get goosebumps.

finally someone who understood the end of the mv lmao so basically when the guy (Baekhyun) comes out of the van dressed like a swat guy he actually comes out as one of them (exo) and seems to have infiltrated the swat to deliver his fellow members we can notice that he’s always aside from them, like the boss he’s basically always sitting in the middle and he never takes a part in the fight, he discreetly disappear from the war and comes back at the end to deliver them.

EXO debuted in 2012, some with years of training before ever signing a contract, all Kpop groups are like that, so they usually are teens when they audition for labels (companies)then live at company dorms under strict training for dance and singing until the company signs them and put them in a group. then they get promoted on tv shows, music shows, the radio then concerts

There are lots of great kpop groups. All of them work hard too, it's just that popularity takes a combination of promotion, luck, and skill so a lot are underrated. You'll understand this more when you see more kpop groups. Like, I just laugh when people are like "eww Kpop, I'd rather be deaf than listen to them" because they just ignore how hardworking and disciplined these groups are. Even the "produced group" stereotype is weird to me because I value skills developed through work more than raw talent. I appreciate that kpop groups take their jobs as real jobs that need preparation and improvement.
EXO members understand that immensely. If you listen to the things they say, Lay advises trainees to take the training period seriously because when you become famous you get busy from a lot of things that aren't music related anymore (acting in shows, invitations to reality programs, events you need to attend, etc.) and so you'll be forced to have shorter preparation time for your actual music performances and you'll experience a lot of stress too. He thinks those who do well on those are the ones who prepared sufficiently during their training period. If they didn't train beforehand, more of them would probably be so stressed that they could turn to substance abuse or need mental health treatments to cope.

Many might not know but SM Entertainment was the first to do those dance practice videos in KPop (Male group Shinhwa's Only One in 2000). I'm not bragging or saying that the others are copy-cat tho, I know many will be butt hurt again haha :)). They were also the first one to introduce the color-changing lightstick during EXO's era for their concert. And what's crazy is that SM continues to improve their technology for much better production.

EXO is a South Korean-Chinese Kpop group with 9 members, initially had 12 members separated as two subgroups EXO-K & EXO-M. They formed in 2011 debuting on April 8, 2012 under SM Entertainment. Their music is a unique combination of music genres performed in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese. In 2014 last time EXO was separated as subgroups to release music, they’ve been active as one group since then performing in multiple languages. EXO remained with 9 members after the departures of Kris(main rapper), Tao, & LuHan after legal issues arose between them & S.M company during 2014 and 2015. In 2016 three of the nine members have a sub unit EXO-CBX while still being part of EXO, which incorporates their stage name initials for Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin. First subgroup EXO-K, leader Suho became the 1st member(trainee) of SM Entertainment in 2006; the following year 2nd member Kai by his father’s encouragement auditioned and got accepted; same time Chanyeol won 2nd place in Smart Model Contest and Sehun had to go through four auditions for 2 years before getting accepted. The subgroup’s last two members(trainees) to go into EXO-K during 2010/2011 were D.O and Baekhyun. EXO-M subgroup leader Kris went through Canada’s Global Auditioning around the same time Lay went for an audition at Changsha; both subsequently moved to South Korea, while Xiumin goes with a friend to audition winning 2nd place he became the next member(not including the friend) to join EXO-M in 2008. Within two years LuHan and Tao were scouted into SM by one of the company representatives in Myeong-dong and during a talent show, the last member to join the subgroup EXO-M was Chen in 2011.
December 2011 they had finalized their group name to EXO; which is short for “EXOplanet”. Their first tv performance was at SBS’s Annual Gayo Daejun Event on Dec 29th. They’ve won many awards and nominations for their variety of creative music genres, appearance, and solo projects.

Explanation of Monster MV:
"In here, it has something to do with time reverse, there's a time loop theory, in the MAMA MV narration, it was said that "time was overturned" so we think the sequence of the mvs are random. the concept of exo fighting the red force is also in place, as you can see, various red colors, and also in this mv, exo were captured (same in lucky one) but they escape here bc baekhyun was a double agent who pretended to be one of the enemy.
Red force is supposed to be the one who went to EXOPlanet and ruled there causing EXO to go to Earth and save it, since the next target is the earth. and at the same time, red force learned about their powers so they are after them.
there is also the theory that red force are in it with humans, this theory springs out from vcr's played in concerts specifically EXOluxion and pathcode teasers

However it isn't necessarily obvious when you see them using their powers (it all depends on the MV -- some times its more obvious than others. You have to know what each of their powers are and to really be watching to understand how and where their powers are being used some times.) All their MVs tell a little more of EXO's story and help to explain why they are on Earth and what they have been sent here to do. The theory for "Monster" is that the story in "Monster" is directly connected to their story in "Lotto MV." Lotto came out after "Monster" in the same year, but "Lotto" is the prequel to "Monster." The way I interpret the two MVs is that if you watch "Lotto", the events in "Lotto" take place right before "Monster" and the story in "Monster" kind of picks up where the story in lotto left off. But you really have to be a detective and analyze all aspects of the MVs and the story to start to piece together their meanings and start to understand the story."

To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 -- So "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV. It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the groups concept. From the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of Life. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. (So the story in the beginning is explaining the groups legend and why they are split into two groups and what they have been sent to Earth to do.) So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "MAMA," not just the K version, because even though both the K and M versions of "Mama" feature all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. Plus, this is a good opportunity for you to hear what the song sounds like in both Mandarin and Korean. (I encourage you to watch EXO-M's version of "MAMA" even if you don't react to it and really listen to the introduction story at the beginning. Now that you know a little more about what it is trying to tell you, you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.) However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and I like to think it stands for Love. 😍
In Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or queen. Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs here is a list of the members and what their special power is.

Suho : water (Fun fact: did you know that Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO,? That's why as the leader of EXO, Kim Jun Myeo's stage name is Suho)

Sehun : Wind
EXO-M
Xiumin : snow/ice (frost)

(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M)

Quite a few of EXO's major MV tell a story. The first one is MAMA EXO-K 엑소케이 'MAMA' MV (Korean ver.). Overdose is also a very creative MV. Growl is one of my favorites, it is mainly a dance video. Wolf is extremely creative too. EXO has rappers, mainly Chanyeol and Sehun, but Kai will also do some rap, but their vocals and dance skills are what really set them apart. They also do not have just one style, although the songs I like the best are R&B ish. DO, Chen and Beckhyun are the lead three singers , but they all have wonderful voices that add a unique texture to their sound. Kai, who is the lead dancer is my favorite and he and Chanyeol had the lower ranges to the songs. BTS relieves heavily on Jimin and their rap line. Their dancing is out of this world too but for me, because of the variety that they produce EXO is my favorite. Seventeen, is also a talented group to check out.
In 2012 EXO came out swinging and took the Kpop world by storm. They have a more pop feel, with many great songs and beautiful ballads. I think they have the best voices in Kpop. I love BTS for different reasons, they are younger and have a current fast paced vibe and style, and they are the bomb today.
I first got acquainted with K*pop a year ago... I think the difference between K*pop and other music is in the dance. K*pop is famous for its dances. When I got to know K*pop, I first watched the music video and K*pop dance is attractive to me. And the next step was to look at the meaning of that song and if the meaning and dance of that music was good, I would listen to that music... until I met E*xo. For me, E*xo is music without subtitles, which means I don't need to know the meaning. I don't have their lyrics, I just enjoy listening to their beautiful voice and wonderful music. Whenever I want to see K*pop or listen to it, I listen to other groups' music or watch other groups' music videos. But whenever I want to listen to really good music, I only listen to E*XO.
E*XO has everything I like and expect from a very good music. E*XO dances very well and skillfully. E*XO has meaningful and beautiful music. E*XO has the best and most important characteristic of a singer group, which is the ability to sing. E*XO has the 9 best singers in K*orea. The 9 best vocalists in the history of K*pop. 9 vocalists and rappers. That means all the members can rap in addition to vocals. The power of the notes and the magical voice of E*XO members is not in any group. When they start singing, I am with myself. I say, are they really normal people? How can they sing so well and powerfully? It's as if they are extraterrestrial with a voice that comes from heaven.
E*XO can perform live music in such a way that you scream with excitement and surprise. They sing so strong and well that recently they protested to them not to perform live music so much and not to show off your good voice. In addition to singing, they are actors. They are also very good. In fact, E*XO are the most talented and best singers, actors, dancers, and models in the K*pop and K*drama industry... I admire many groups besides EXO and I like their music, such as Stray Kids, Ateez, seventeen, TXT, TNX, NCT, Black Pink, TWICE, Girls Generation, BTS, and... but E*XO is an unrepeatable legend in the K*pop music industry. This talented group It has the best members, especially the talent of singing, acting, dancing, and modeling.
E*XO deserves to be called the king/emperor of K*pop.
EXO is a great vocal, dance, rap group. I hope you'll react to more of their videos.

This video depicts a resistance. U can see at the start all these shots of the members somehow isolated from the crowd. U see all these cameras too. It starts with that trashed dinner hall then u see the watch rewinding to before the destruction. U can see at first they are all okay but being watched. It suggests that they are co-conspirators and they were supposed to meet at that event, secretly I assume... But like halfway in, when they do, it turns out that they were busted. And that where u see those police and military guys from earlier brutalizing them and that's why they are all so battered and bruised. They then get arrested but it ends with one of them, who got away earlier, breaking them out...
Exo's Kai, Lay and Sehun are the key dancers. Check out "Do it Together" VCR. VCR are videos they play throughout concerts like intermission so the group can rest or change for the next stage. Like BTS , EXO and other groups work extremely hard all year round with barely any rest. They've all live together in the company dorms and grew up that way. They practice for hours, record for hours, they also are actors so they do dramas and movies, commercials, variety shows, game shows, soundtracks, and also side solo work.

EXO does have a storylike/concept. Everything is explained in EXO’s debut MV MAMA and their 2015 MV teasers (about 10 of them) called Pathcode I think.
But the gist of it is that there aliens from an EXO planet stuck on earth and their ultimate goal is highly theorized by EXOL. But generally it’s know that their running away from the red force. They each have powers too.
The MV that mostly focus on their concept included What is Love, MAMA, Overdose, Monster, Lucky One, Kokobop.
The one I left out are Growl and Call Me Baby but their one their most popular comebacks. Esp Growl which is what made them popular.
I don’t want to make this post too long so I suggest searching fan theories on CZcams and video introducing EXO (esp ones before the Olympics as they performed during the flossing ceremony)
You should what the introduction videos to the kpop groups you've watched so far to know who they are. Now with exo, it might take some time to know all of their names sense there is alot of them, I'm still having trouble, but thats probably because of my bad memory 😂😂, and can you react to seventeen: Clap and Pentagon: shine, you'll love that one!

Monster in 2020 is the most watched Exo's MV and the highest in among SM MVs too. Ooww., not to mention Loveshot in 2nd Kokobop in 3rd.

Exo's storyline is actually really complex. All of their videos starting late 2011 up until now all tell a story so their music videos can be hard to decipher if you aren't familiar with it. they were created in 2011 by Lee Sooman who at the time was the CEO of SM entertainment which is the biggest entertainment company of South Korea ( often called the big three are a SM,YG,JYP). They started as a 12 members group split into groups of 6. EXO K sang in Korean and promoted in Korea while EXO M sang in mandarin and promoted in China. as of now, they are 9 members, they actively promote in Japan as well. EXO is known as the nations pick and some call them the kings of kpop they are quintuple million-dollar sellers as of 2018 with their fifth album and the most awarded artist in South Korea they break their own records. exo's vocal line is known to be very strong you guys should check out some guide to exo videos.
